What kind of build should I choose?

Hey everyone! Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I've played through New Vegas six or seven times on my Xbox 360, but I've recently built a PC and am installing New Vegas as I type this.

My biggest problem is always deciding what kind of character I want to play, so for my first PC playthrough, I'd appreciate some advice.

Here's some builds I had in mind (I ususally make up Roleplaying after I make a new character):

Only use SMGs and pistols.

  • Use 9mm weapons and work my way up to 12.7mm and .45
  • Use Light armor.
  • If I were to make this build, I'd rolepaly as a mobster, and have high luck, charisma, and probably work for Mr. House.

Energy Weapons (have never done a pure energy playthrough):

  • I'd probably end up using power armor and would favor laser over plasma.
  • Would invest skill points into Science to take full advantage of perks.

Melee and Unarmed Crazy Hobo

  • Ok, so I have put some thought into this character, and would roleplay as a crazed homeless man who eats people and is addicted to booze.
  • Would only use weapons like knives, cleavers, and spiked knuckles, and would wear Wasteland clothes (brahmin skin outfits).*
  • Would only make caps by selling soda bottles and tin cans.

Please let me know what you think of these builds and help me choose the right one. I'll be installing a few mods to fix some animations and what-not, and will probably end up using JE Sawyer's mod, but feel free to list any mods you think would fit with these characters. I've never installed mods before, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

*Also, I'll be playing Very Hard/hardcoe, except for maybe the Crazy Hobo build. I'd have to see how difficult that would really be.

Thanks everyone!

PS: This isn't a DiD playthrough.

PPS: I hope I put this in the right section.

Also, I apologize I didn't list any stats, but I always spend at least a half an hour picking my SPECIAL, so these builds are just really vague and general, and I'll make up Tagged skill points on the spot to fit Roleplay.

Go Light Armor for Light Touch with SMGs/Pistols. Seriously, DO IT, DO IT NOW! You need that critical damage to boost your weapon up to par with enemies seeing as Very Hard cripples leadspitters severely more than any other weapon type, mostly because these weapons rely on DPS, not DAM.

Good point, I forgot about Light Touch. Ok, SMG/Pistols will now use light armor.

My sig if you want to give energy weapons a try.

Just depends on preference, really. Almost every type of weapon build is going to be viable in one way or another.

That's a very useful guide you have there, but I've decided to go with a variant of the SMG build. I'll probably end up doing energy weapons next time.

Thanks guys!
