I'm always a rogue variation of some sort, it depends highly on the game, and I'll see as the release date draws closer and I have more information to work off of.
Ideally I would be a Diplomat,, focused highly in mercantile, speech-craft, and various magic skills, and stealth skills that allow me to turn the tides of any situation to my advantage subtlety but make more adept at city life then in the wilderness. However, for this play-style to be enjoyable there must be a very good interactive AI system with either a lot of multi-pathed quests within the cities, or a great deal of procedural generation involved in Guild inter relations and reputations. This ideal situation is something that is asked for every game, promised by almost every RPG, and NEVER delivered. As such my hopes remain, but I have no illusions, and will likely not play this character.
My next character type would therefore be a thief, very similar skill-sets, but with a focus on illusion, alteration, lockpicking of course, and sneak. My goal in this character type being wealth development, and discretely learning, about the society I live in, and the people I steal from. Ideally such a system would have an immersive and advanced economy to deal with, another promise often paired with Radiant AI, and similar concepts, but once again never delivered. Of course, that's not necessary, I would play a thief so long as there was set valuable loot in some areas, be it castles, wealthy residents, powerful mages, city vaults, or ancient towers of some sort for me to attempt to steal from. Finally assuming they fail at this as well, and make all loot leveled as in Oblivion, or god forbid make the lower leveled items "replicas" until you reach the appropriate level, I will be forced into my final option...
The assassin... The direction that all games are taking, combat orientation, where your character must fight to progress, and inability to fight means certain death. This character role is apparent, a few key weapon skills, short-blade if available, and if it provides any perks to sneak attacks, otherwise, long blade or bow. Alchemy for poisons, sneak to aid in the attack, and illusion of course as a final measure. Anything else is dependent on the game. At the very least though, if the game is reduced to this level, it must have a competent assassination skill, I want to feel accomplished when I take some on out silently. Artifacts such as standing directly in front of someone in sneak and not being seen must disappear, use of shadows, and having to be quiet must be emphasized, the ability to slowly get rid of indications of using illusion spells the higher your level must be optional. The game must allow for the illusive one shot one kill, rather by default when attacking someone in sneak in their sleep, or rather its purely an effect of an increased critical damage. If these elements are included I can at least walk away mildly satisfied...
If they fail at all of the above... I'll just switch to two worlds II... Smaller studio, more focus on the hardcoe Euro gamers, and much more receptive to fan feedback, unless proven wrong in this game. That would be a sad transition though given how pathetic the first game in their series was....
