what kind of games would you suggest

Post » Sat Sep 11, 2010 12:36 am

Ok, so, my wife plays some video games, but not a lot. She's shown interest in some of mine when I play them, and we even traded off and on when I played Blue Dragon for the 360. I would however, like to draw her in deeper into Video Gaming. Right now, she primarily plays on her DS, and the games she plays most are Puzzle Games(Sudoku, Touch Master, Professor Layton), but she also LOVES Tomb raider Games. She tried Heroes of Mana for the DS, but couldn't get into it, probably because of the storyline(thats pretty much what she cited), but I think it might be because, besides Blue Dragon, she has no experience in RPGs, and I know they can be overwhelming to people who don't regularly play them. Oh, and, she also loves Mario Games. Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario World, etc etc.

So, knowing the above information, what kind of games would you suggest getting her to get her farther into gaming(hopefully leading to RPGs eventually). Available Systems are: PS2, Wii, 360, DS, PSP, Gamecube. I'd say older systems, but I'm not sure she'd be ready to downgrade so far in graphics in exchange for some awesome classic games.

Do you think she'd like Mortal Kombat?

If she likes a humorous, short game, I suggest Portal.

Lol, I doubt it. not 100% sure on that, because I don't play many fighter games myself. Maybe I should break out my Soul Calibur II and IV and play it some and find out ^^

What about Zelda? I know of a lot of people who had their first "deep" gaming experience with Zelda, so it seems to be a rather good entryway. And The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii is a very good game too.

Since she likes puzzles then I can think of no better series than Zelda to spark an interest in RPGs. The stories are generally easy to follow, tons of neat puzzles (especially for someone new to the series), exploration and dungeons à la Tomb Raider. Maybe save Twilight Princess for last since it has one of the more involved plots, which could make transitioning to more complex RPG stories easier.

Edit- Slow typing strikes again!

There's also Okami (or its DS sequel Okamiden), which is very similar to the Zelda games. It also has an EXP system (Praise) which can be used to raise HP and such.

Hmm, Legend of Zelda is an excellent idea. Which one would you suggest for her to start with, since I agree, Twilight Princess might be a bit to involved/complex for her to truly get into right off the bat ^^

Zelda, Deathspank, the recent Monkey Island releases. I say stick with mostly the comedy driven games. Not that Zelda is comical, it just fits in with the accessible games.

Hard to imagine going wrong with any of 'em, though I'd probably start out with A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time.

I dunno man, I hate to be the one to say this but she doesn't sound like she'd be too interested in gaming. Give her a Zelda game to play on her ds or something, but don't try to force it too much... some people just aren't gamers. I can barely even play games I loved 2 years ago for 15 minutes now, sometimes you just grow out/can't get into a hobby, and there's not too much anyone else can do to change it.

Ocarina of Time. Its what got me into gaming, and it should be able to get most people into it.

Loves Tomb Raider games huh? If only you had a PS3, Drake's Fortune 1 and 2 would probably be pure gold for her.

Try the Devil May Cry series. Or the Prince of Persia series.

Shadow of Collosus is a great suggestion in general

Shadow of the Colossus. It's more or less a puzzle game, but is easy and uncomplicated, good for beginners. It's also interesting to explore, and may serve to make other games with open exploration less intimidating.

I wouldn't really recommend Ocarina of Time, both the graphics and the user interface aged rather poorly.

What about a game along the lines of Monkey Island?

Sounds like that might be up her alley if she enjoys puzzles.

What about Psychonauts? It's a platformer/adventure game on Xbox, XBLA, PS2 and PC. Not too difficult (except the last two levels), and a nice sense of humour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj_8EaEbS2Y

Or Portal.

DS. Puzzle games. Light RPG. Is http://www.amazon.com/Puzzle-Quest-2-Nintendo-DS/dp/B0033BJS9M too obvious? Good way to get into it, did it with a cousin of mine and the first one. Two years later and she's holding DM sessions. Mwahaha.
