What kind of magic would a typical Nord use, if any

A true Nord would be a barbarian i.e. Two-handed specialist with Light Armor. Other primary skills would be Block, Smithing, One-handed and Archery.

A Nord would just pour some alcohol on the wound to disinfect it then tell them to walk it off :P

I agree though that restoration seems like the only magic a typical Nord would mess with if any at all. Personally if I were a Nord then I would see relying on magic as something only a milk drinker would do, there's obviously no healers in Stomrcloak camps as the wounded just lay there in a tent with bloody rags.

you guys have been a lot of help. It seems like the consensus is restoration or frost, but I only want to use 1 school of magic. I have two concerns though:

--I'm really interested in using only frost spells, but before i do that I'm curious if anyone knows WHY the draugr use the frost spells. Know why they use it might help me create a good reason behind my nord using it.

--If I use restoration, would the other nords pick on me and call me a Milk Drinker?

I would guess Nords originally took to frost spells because any invading enemy would already be suffering from the cold. Preference in weapons is usually directly connected to the opposition's weaknesses.

As to being called a milk-drinker, just let them know it's "time for a bit o' the old rough an' tumble".

(ten points to the first to identify that reference)

Draugr and frost, at this time the title of the lore book escapes me, but in said book it mentions that the nord shamans have always had an affinity for the winds, wheather, and cold of skyrim. This is expressed through summoning up blizzards and winds to help in war and using forst magic. There is also Hrormir and his icestaff.

They actually sort of complement you for your restoration, though may throw general anti-magic insults at you.

There's plenty of Nords who'd like to use magic in Skyrim, but they just can't focus their magicka... :)

I think using any magic as a Nord warrior would look a bit feeble to other Nord warriors. There are enough health potions lying around to warrant not using magic anyway in all truth. I'm playing as an Orc warrior at the moment who uses no magic or enchanting, it's my 1st try at the warrior type characters as I usually play mages and so far (level 24) I'm doing fine without the safety net of restoration.

Belrand who is a traditional old Nord spellsword uses Summon Familiar, restoration, alteration and frost. The suspicion of magic is relatively recent and not as absolute as people in the forums make it out to be.

At the same time my Stormcloak battlemage is primarily a fire mage, because you can't fight other Nords very well with frost. :D

Off topic but I personally prefer shock, after all as I always there is nothing quite like "Kicking ash all across Skyrim."

The same applies with lasers in Fallout to "Kicking ash all across the wasteland."

"...Silver Rush, feel the rush of a warm laser in your hands."-- Mr. New Vegas

Something worth noting, IMO, is that a traditional Nord wouldn't be barred from using any school of magic. It is pretty clear from the dialogue in game, from such as the Nord apprentice at the College of WInterhold, that the distrust for magic is something that happened in the 4th Era, starting with the Oblivion Crisis.

I thought the destruction of the city of Winterhold, sans the College, also played a part in the Nords' dislike of magick.

It did, but that happened quite a while after the Oblivion Crisis. So it started with the Oblivion Crisis and the Great Collapse made it worse. Of course, the Nords don't seem to dislike specific types of magic much, just being distrustful of the concept. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Guard_Dialogue#Reactions_to_Player.27s_Skill_Level

True, and there was a crackdown on mages across Tamriel after the OC, with the Mages Guild being dissolved for allegations of "daedra trafficking."

-Draugr are ancient Nords and their preferred schools of magic were frost and restoration....considering Skyrim is a cold country, that could be why the Nords favored frost as that's what felt natural to them.

- I would call you a milk drinker ha but you could always break their nose then cast Heal Other on them as you tell them that restoration is a perfectly valid school of magic then ask if they agree :P
