I prefer daggers and swords. Could never really stand to use axes or maces. Especially not maces.

Depends on your play type.

Non-armor / light armored Pure stealth (sneak close and back stab using damage bonus coupled with alchemy) = dagger.

Heavy or light armor. 1h with block = mace or axe (slower attacks but greater damage. Shield blocks and staggers between swings). Sword works but does less damage.

Light armored Dual 1h = sword or axes (it's more about speed and mobility)

Light armored Spellsword (magic & melee) = sword (not too slow but effective). Support both melee and armor / health with spells and enchanting.

Heavy armored pure warrior (man-at-arms) = hardest damage 1h (mace or axe = 1h with block or dual 1h). Otherwise 2h is just as good. Back up with good smithing skill as it's all about giving out the best damage and not worrying what is coming back (in other words a walking tank)

Such a question is like asking what is the best type of firearm.

It all depends on the situation, how fast you want to hit versus how much damage you want to inflict.

I like my curved sword all the girls love it. And guards too, which is creepy.

It depends on the character.

Daggers for assassins and mages.

Swords, axes or maces for warriors.

It's a pity their aren't more unique maces and axes (1H) in the game.

Dual wield katana and Dragonbane, proof that the Blades are useful for at least something. (Dual enchant the katana with paralysis and absorb health and it's party time.)

Though knocking someone's head off sideways with an ebony mace is singularly satisfying.

Those are for milkdrinkers. Best one-handed weapon is a fist.

I like 1h maces when I'm using a shield, but go with sword and axe generally when I dual wield(or 2 axes).

Single weapon with no shield I'd have to say sword(smithed or bound)

X2

My Orc barbarian in light armor (fur & forsworn) dual wields two Orcish axes and carries an Orcish bow.

Whatever weapon LOOKS best on my character and fits his/her roleplay build is what I go with...which is usually something that does far less damage than daedric items.

Daggers have the fastest weapon speed of all weapons, but don't do the same damage as a sword. Bring some daggers to a grindstone and then enchant them. You now have something stronger than a sword.

Maces cause they do tons of damage and they are the most brutal.

Only if you want to duel wield, you're better off using Swords as Daggers have a wierd animation which causes them to swing much slower.

Unless of course your using Sneak.. 30x damage is absolute obscene.
