Let's first of all keep this light, and flame-free. The purpose of this thread topic is to consolidate what is known about PC downloadables so that new folks to the forum might have a complete and informative reference to find extra content for Oblivion right from the start.
I know I can count on Glargg and Turija to assist in this project, I'm hoping a lot of people will help with the effort.
As has been said in another thread here, the pinned thread at the top of the forum here is in need of a serious re-write.
It is the target of this thread to pull together a comprehensive replacement for that thread so that what is available NOW - and from where - can be set down with accurate directions so that anyone brand new to the game can find everything that is available.
As Glargg noted:
"Oddly enough, the first pinned thread in this forum is about the DLC. ... it is intended to be about the PC version, and is no longer valid since the online store was taken down"
Turija then commented:
"Well, sort of . . . here is what the pinned thread says about that:
"Likewise, this content is not compatible with the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. Oblivion content for Xbox 360 is purchased via Xbox LIVE, while Shivering Isles can be purchased for PlayStation 3 on the PlayStation Store. For customer support, please contact us via email."
The statement in the pinned thread is confusing as hell since it starts off saying the DLC is not compatible with Xbox and then generally refers to Xbox live for "Oblivion content" without stating what can be found there. The pinned thread should be deleted and replaced with something that includes Xbox Live and Steam in the title and rewritten to list the DLC available at each place and not be so darned confusing. While we are at it, the pinned thread should probably also discuss the KOTN disc that can still be purchased used.
Maybe we should collectively agree about what the pinned thread should say about the DLC and then request that the pinned thread be replaced with a new, updated and informative version?"
(All of this was arising from a discussion about XBOX DLC content)
Here is some more confusion for you:
"Please note that this content will not be compatible with versions of Oblivion downloaded from Steam."
~and~
"Presently, the Deluxe Editions of Oblivion on Steam and Direct 2 Drive are the best ways to get this content. "
(with apologies to Gstaff)
Do you see the conflict of information?
It is clear that there exists a considerable amount of 'Disinformation' on this subject, and if we can arrive at a practical statement or message concerning WHAT there is, and HOW to get it - that could be a wonderful thing even for those who have had the game on PC for a good long while. It's truly amazing the stuff that can be dug up in a reasonable discussion with enough serious contributors.
I think also that no such topic would be at all complete without an explanation of 'MODS' and what they are for, what they accomplish, and how they can be obtained or created. I for one was completely in the dark about MODS from the beginning, and assumed they were something that they turned out not to be.
So then, the project before us would have two distinct sections. In the first - the DLC's would be the focus. In the second half of the message MODS would be addressed. In this way the entire PC experience can be laid out for anyone new to the game and series to understand from the beginning. I think that would be enormously helpful and if you would like to contribute to the effort by all means come ahead!
The end object should be a clear, concise, single post sized message containing all of the information anyone might need about these two concerns.
This end product would then be made available for the Moderators to post as a pinned and locked info-topic at the top of the forum.
One last note: When I began here, I had no idea what a "DLC" was either. It went right on by me for that reason, and I ended up chasing my - um.. TAIL. For the topic to be effective it should have a very clear title, and I would suggest: "PC Downloadable Content (DLC)" as a good title, since it would be absolutely understandable to anybody.
