What Lies Beneath?

What Lies Beneath

Life in Cyrodiil, and Tamriel in general, is pretty good for most folk. The Oblivion Crisis ended ten years ago and since then there has been no threats or signs of invasion. People can live peacefully in almost anywhere in the Province without much trouble. Of course bandits, murderers, thieves and the like still roam around, however they are much less frequent. Since Dagon's invasion, the Elder Council and City Watch have been able to root out criminals a lot easier without much complications. This is because they have had much more time on their hands without having to worry about much more. Even taxes these days are cheaper, seeing as there is a smaller need for money. Usually the Councils would need septims for investing in the Imperial Legion and other defences, but obviously it isn't required as much.

So overall life is good and virtually everyone can live simply without the stress of the Oblivion Crisis. However, lately there have been disturbances in a cave just outside the Imperial City. Strange sounds have been revealing themselves outside the caverns and sometimes you can hear a faint scream. The noise can reach as far as the Waterfront District. People there have been disturbed and even frightened by what comes out of the cave. People have voluntereed to check the place out, seeing the caverns as no big deal. What they saw was not what they were expecting. These people, ranging from regular townsfolk to seasoned adventurers, have not returned. Well, except for one. This one man entered the cave young and energetic. He came out appearing old and withered, his hair grey, face looking wrinkled and scarred. In short, he looked like death and had aged dramaticlly. Along side that, he cannot remember anything about his life, except what he saw in the caverns. He spends his days bumbling around living for nothing, being tormented by his experience in the caverns. However something in his mind will not let him commit suicide, it is like another way of torturing the poor man. However if anyone, for whatever reason, wanted to know something about the place, he would be the only source of information.

It has been about five months now since the noises came out from the cave, and people have disappeared there. The sounds are even louder and about everyone in the Imperial City is getting frustrated with what is happening. However even worse, some young children and elderly people have been acting disturbingly, randomly saying sinister and sadistic words, some even trying to hit people. At first they were accused of just being insane, but by now at least a quarter of the young and old are acting like this. Scientists have explained to the public that the disturbing sounds coming from the cave had taken a large toll on people with underdeveloped or deterriating minds, and that it would only continue. The Mages Guild have travelled to this cave hoping to discover what is going on, and if there is any type of magic involved. They reported back that there is 'dark magic' surrounding the place heavily, and would not risk exploring the depths. Due to this, the Elder Council decided to take action.

The Elder Council have attempted to contact certain adventurers with special skills from all over Tamriel. He has sent a messenger with a letter to all of them explaining why they're needed. They hope that these people will reply and agree to the deal and attend a meeting. If they do they'll be presented with much gold, definately enough to live off comfortably.

You, the RPers, will be these adventurers. You can have any skill you want as long as it is realistic and Elder Scrolls related. However this RP is in no way set in stone for you. You don't have to be one of these adventurers if it doesn't take your fancy. Instead you could be an ordinary person who wants to check out the cave, or a mercenary hired to investigate, or a member of a guild sent there on a mission or on your own personal accord. The whole 'meeting with the Elder Council' idea is just a way for you to base your character around.

If I get enough people to join, I'll make another thread for the actual RPing. This is just a topic to discuss ideas and post character sheets if you want to join.

P.S- By the way this is my first RP so if there is something you think can be improved, tell me constructively, don't just be harsh. Oh and I haven't come up with a proper title name yet, so bear with me on that.

Name: Ashina Zelaku
Gender: Female
Race: Dunmer Ashlander
Age: 120

Appearance: http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk10/gallowglass_2008/ScreenShot63-1.jpg, http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk10/gallowglass_2008/ScreenShot201.jpg, http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk10/gallowglass_2008/ScreenShot22-2.jpg, http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk10/gallowglass_2008/ScreenShot12-2.jpg

Height: 5' 11''
Weight: 182 pounds
Hair colour: Black
Eye colour: Red

Armour/Clothes: Pit Cuirass, Dwarven Greaves, Pit Boots
Weapons: Fine Steel Claymore
Other equipment: A selection of kwama eggs, common Ashland plants, and various fruits. She also has some bottled magic, but not much.

Skills/Talents: She is a good public speaker and confident enough to do things if she thinks they will be of benefit. Also an illusionist and expert in conjuration.

Mentality: Whilst she is an ashkhan with the confidence to batter down the sixist accusations levelled at her pride by traditionalists even more fanatical than herself, she does not stand on ceremony unless speaking with foreigners and does not pretend that she is above the accessible pleasures. She is far more expedient than her ancestral creed dictates, and although she presents what are sometimes antagonistic views to her Ashlanders and her enemies she is always able to justify her actions, or else allows her position to cast doubt on any claims made against her. An ambitious firebrand, she lets her cultured Ashland birth give her well-founded self-respect which is then conveyed to her associates, and although she is often seen as an authoritatarian leader she is willing to take advice, if she expects her tribe to take her advice in return, provided she can defend it with logic. She is also honest; no matter what, she won't lie to someone.

History: Born in the Ashlanders, she became involved in a power struggle as her father crippled himself and the tribe in paying off debts to the Zainab, who had already taken a considerable amount in raids, and the rewards of being sponsored by House Hlaalu. Her sister, Sakira, was a priestess of Boethiah, and so did nothing as Clanholder Nirabi and Gulakhan Assamma-Idan attempted to gain political power in the tribe, and over the young Ashina by teaching her their own ways and enforcing their own views. Assamma-Idan taught her how to fight a war, and Nirabi taught her what to do and why, and the two of them made a brilliant military genius of the young girl, who quickly won back lost land and some of her tribe's lost prestige in raids and ambushes, often against the Ashland code of honour, which left many of the Zainab tribe's best officers slain in the wilderness. Her seduction of the Zainab ashkhan, which resulted in his murder by Sakira, Nirabi, and Assamma-Idan, who had been waiting for him, gained her much power amongst the tribesmen. She at once became the de facto leader of the Zelaku, although the Zainab appealed to House Hlaalu. The two staged a coup in the Zelaku camp, which saw the ashkhan, many of his officers, and most of the tribe murdered. Ashina, however, had been warned of the attack by Azura, who made the young Dunmer her priestess before allowing her to lead the rest of the tribe away from the camp, which she burned. The Hlaalu and their supporters were burned, and a Zainab raid was ambushed in its camp as it, without having done any fighting, celebrated victory. However, Ashina had no choice but to leave the Ashlanders, and, with her scouts claiming that the Morag Tong were in pursuit along with House Hlaalu militiamen, she left Morrowind. In Cyrodiil, she began a guerrilla war, but the two sides battled to a draw which left much of the north of the province impoverished. However, she herself escaped, and now seeks a way back to her native Ashlands so she can relight old flames and begin her war again.

Name:Guillaume de Bergerac
Nickname: Guy
Race: Breton
Gender: Male
Age: 21

Talents:

Despite all his faults, Guy has received a classical education and is a well read and sometimes intelligent individual. Most of his skills however are physical. Guy is potentially a talented swordsman though his lack of experience holds him back greatly, he can also ride and, to a certain extent shoot a crossbow.

Appearance: At 5,9' Guy isn't unusually tall, nor is he very bulky instead rather thin and wiry though surprisingly fit and healthy thanks to a passion for hiking in the hills around his father's manor. Classically pale and blue eyed, Guy is a model Breton and it's was quite obvious that he lead a comfortable life. Now though, the once finely dressed young man is looking decidedly ragged as the stresses and strains of his new life are introduced to him.

Personality:
Guy, was raised from a young age on tales of great heroes and evil villains. This has stuck with him through to advlthood and he holds very strong ideals about life and chivalry and his place as the son of a noble. Unfortunately, Guy doesn't fit into his own vision of the world. An untested soldier, behind his bravado and delusions of nobility Guy is a bit of a hothead, the only time he has ever gotten into a fight was in a bar where he nearly killed a drunken farmer. Not quite the flawless hero of the fiction then. Guy hides from this reality by lying, (according to him the farmer was actually abusing one of the barmaids although nobody else backs up his claim.)

History:
Guy slammed through the door with a crack, nearly losing his balance on the treacherously narrow gang plank outside the Bloated float tavern.

“And stay out ya worthless drunk.”

The voice came from the figure, standing with its back to the yellowish light flooding out from the ship. The light made it impossible to make out anything outside of the tavern. The room beyond however was anything but inviting; patrons stared at Guy who was soaked through by now, thanks to the rain, and was swaying very slightly, still standing on the boarding plank.
The figure made as if to turn away from the bedraggled Breton though it looked back over its shoulder, saying in a calmer, self satisfied voice;

“You realise this means you're fired”

With that the door was closed, cutting Guy off from the noises of the inn and leaving him staring wistfully at the tiny crack of light filtering underneath.
Well that was waste.
Guillaume de Bergerac, eldest son of Lord Cyrano de Bergerac (may he rest in peace) and at one time the heir to family estate, turned and blew out through his nostrils, as much to clear the droplets which hung from the tip of nose as anything. Wiping his face to clear away more of the water which was streaming down from his sodden hair, The Breton hunched his shoulders to provide some protection from the weather and trudged onto the main street of the Imperial City's Waterfront District. The weather had driven everyone inside and so Guy trudged alone, eyes firmly fixed upon his shoes.
The great noble, reduced to working as a bouncer in one of the Imperial City's rougher districts and not even being able to manage that...
He'd only had a few!
It wasn't as though Guy had gone through as much as that Nord. Now they were a race that could really put back their mead! Still it probably hadn't been a good idea to punch the merchant, the fellow had gone down with a broken nose. Maybe it wasn't a wise move to attack one of the wealthier patrons in the place, especially when your sword seems to have a mind of its own. He'd barely missed the head of a Redguard sailor.
“Probably a pirate”
Guy thought absently. Normal customers just didn't come into the bar armed with a cutlass. The pair of them had caused quite a mess and that was when some of the other staff had intervened, Guy couldn't quite remember who, only the silhouetted man who'd kicked him out.

Suddenly, Guy pulled up short. Ahead of him in the semi darkness the Breton could just make out a form, lying just inside one of the alleys that lead off of the main street. There was nothing unusual about this; there were always drunken sailors, kicked out of the local pubs, who'd passed out in the gutter on the way back to their quarters, not to mention the victims of the Waterfront's criminal facet. The body seemed to be of the second persuasion and... Yes! It was still clothed, this was rare, the muggers must have been interrupted Guy mused, it made sense considering how obvious the body was to any passers by.

The Breton moved over the corpse; better that he looted the thing than some common wastrel. He bent down an noticed the bag, still slung over the shoulder of the man, an imperial. Guy sighed and glanced around cautiously, he felt too exposed to carry out a proper search. A quick riffle through the satchel should clear the young man of most of his valuables. It occurred to him that someone might have beaten him to this task. It turned out that this was correct, the satchel was empty save for a note addressed to a Sir Hawthorn, Guy vaguely remembered hearing about the man from gossipers in the Tavern; he was a travelling adventurer now, a former mercenary who'd come good during the Oblivion crisis.

The note itself bore the seal of the Elder council and spoke of the notorious haunted caverns that lay just to the East of the city. Guy's eyes widened at the reward offered as he sheltered the piece of parchment from the worst of the weather.
“Well, I'm a knight too...”
He was tempted, already the Breton's head was filled with images of the riches and glory he'd receive if he could quell the evil that lurked within the Caverns. Standing up from where he'd been crouching, Guy set off for a different tavern, no longer trudging; he moved with purpose. He'd stay the night in the city and set out for the Council hall in the morning.

With any luck, he'd return a wealthy man.

Weapons: Guy still carries his trusty steel sabre which he has had since his time in Daggerfall.

Armour/Clothing:
Guy is currently dressed in a leather vest, worn over the top of a simple tan tunic and trousers. On his feet he wears a worn pair of leather boots, they appear to be quite old although seem to be holding up quite well.

Misc. Items: A pencil and a scrap of paper (required for descriptions of people thrown out of the tavern.)

OOC: I'm not sure if this sheet matches your outline, but it's already filled out, and I'm too lazy to make a completely new character. :) Funny though, I can't even remember where this character originated...

Name: Gregory Rolston
Gender: Male
Race: Breton
Age: 28

Height: 5'9''
Eye Color: Blue
Hair Style: Short, neatly combed blonde hair.
Skin Color: Pale.

Class: Mage/Scholar
Class Focus: Magic

Major Skills: Destruction, Restoration, Alteration, Illusion, Mysticism

General Appearance: Gregory is the typical mage. He's frail, pale, and otherwise quite weak looking physically. He often has dark circles under his eyes from lack of sleep. He has a slight beard, but it's hardly noticeable.
Tattoos/Scars: None.
Apparel Worn Most Often: A red silk robe with a hood and gold trimmed shoes.
Apparel worn least often: A highwaymen's shirt, black wide pants, and leather boots.
Weapons: Only his magic.

Mental Description: Gregory can act quite differently, depending on the situation. In normal conversation, he is often quiet and doesn't offer his own opinion on matters, but rather listens to what others have to say. He will usually only speak if he's asked a question, and even then is usually quick and blunt.

By himself, he's constantly working, barely ever stopping to take a break. He is very dedicated to his studies, and may snap at someone if they interrupt him in the middle of something. Overall, he could be described as somewhat anti-social. Not because he dislikes people, but rather because he simply sees socializing as a waste of his time.

Should someone mention something that interests him though, such as history or a particular type of magic that he's studying at the time, he could go on talking for hours. In times of danger, he could be seen as rather cowardly, trying to avoid combat as long as possible, but when it becomes obvious that there's no avoiding it, he becomes utterly ruthless, often leaving people wondering what happened.

Brief History: Gregory was born in Chorrol to a rich family of mages, and was introduced to it early on in life. Both his parents molded him to carry on their legacy, and as soon as he turned eighteen, he joined the Mage's Guild. Since then, he has steadily risen through the ranks, though he is somewhat disliked among his fellows for his anti-social behavior. None of that matters to him though. All he cares about is finishing his next mission for the Guild, continuing his studies of magic, and investigating the next curiosity to catch his eye.

Name: Panthar
Gender: Male
Race: Ohmes-rhat khajiit
Age: 35

Appearance: Panthar is an ohmes-rhat khajiit, meaning he looks like an imperial with a tail.
He's tall, muscular, and has long dark hair going midway down his back. His teeth are pointed and sharp-looking, giving him a fierce look, frightening to some. Judging by the way he looks, most would not want to get in a fight with him unless they're experienced fighters.
Other appearance: Most Ohmes-rhat have cat-like tattoos on their faces to show that they're khajiits and not imperials. Panthar never saw a need to have the cat tattoos on his face. In his opinion, his tail works fine to show people that he's a khajiit.

Height: 6' 4''
Weight: 170 lbs
Hair colour: Dark brown, some have mistaken his hair color for black.
Eye colour: Green

Armour/Clothes: Nothing fancy. He wears a leather vest with chainmail under it. And leather a leather pants.
Weapons: A steel long sword., 75 five steel throwing knives and a pair of brass knuckles.
Unique apparel: None.
Other equipment: Panthar carries as little as possible. He only carries his weapons and about 100 Septims in his pocket.

Skills/Talents: Panthar is skilled with most of the khajiit martial arts. He can use a long sword, fight unarmed, use throwing knives with accuracy, and is good at sneaking.

Mentality: Usually calm, except in battle and when offended.

History:
Panthar is a hitman. He hunts people down for money, sometimes killing them, and sometimes letting them live... whatever his clients want. He will never kill an innocent person. The people he kills are people who deserve to die, like criminals and such. He does not believe himself to be a bad person, in his mind he's a hero and is just ridding the world of evil.
The legion even knows of Panther but never saw a reason to arrest him, he usually kills people they were after themselves.

Then one day he got the letter from the elder council...

Name: Justinian
Nickname: Dusty
Gender: M
Race: Khajiit
Age: 35

Appearance: Tall, lean but very well muscled Khajiit, with a thick coat of reddish brown fur
Other appearance: none

Height: 6' 3"
Weight: 220 lbs
Hair colour: reddish brown
Eye colour: yellow (cat eyes)

Armour/Clothes: Enchanted glass armor and burgundy gentleman's attire
Weapons: Glass sword, ebony dagger
Unique apparel: A few enchanted pieces of jewelry, and a mysterious family signet ring
Other equipment: He's a moderately wealthy khajiit, with a home in both Anvil & the Imperial City, and a fine horse that he reared from a foal

Skills/Talents: sword fighting, armor, athletics, acrobatics, sneaking, lockpicking

Mentality: Highly intelligent and kind hearted, but remains wary of those who wrong him; refined in manner, and learned in a host of subjects, Dusty can speak many languages, and is at ease with all people

History: Dusty doesn't talk much about where he hailed from, who his family was, or anything of that sort. All anyone knows is that he is arrived in Anvil onboard a foreign ship, purchased a home, and set about creating a life for himself. After taking up residence in Anvil and working as an Adventurer in the area, he traveled to the Imperial City, where he also purchased a home. Money does not seem to be a terribly big concern for this Khajiit, yet he is constantly working at this task or that. Despite having very refined manners and being very personable, Dusty tends to keep to himself.

Name: Varon Lladri
Gender: Male
Race: Dunmer
Age: 74 (looks mid 30's)

Appearance: Varon shows all the signs of a man who has been through a lot, his face is scarred, with one hugely prominent one just below his right eye, his face is well defined, strong chin and high cheekbones, he has short black hair which matches his almost lifeless dark brown eyes. He is pale, especially for a dunmer, and has been confused as a vampire occasionally, which couldn't be further from the truth.

Class: Hunter
Lifestyle: Varon is not your typical hunter, not by a long shot. You see, he hunts monsters, going from town to town he has no real home and instead stays in inns for as long as it takes him to do his job. Sometimes he is contacted directly, but more often he will find random jobs, sightings of wolves by farmers, speakings of a necromancer in a cave, werewolf, he will do most things. He makes his money this way, and has no friends to speak of, just several contacts which people know they can ask for his help from.

Equipment: Customised leather armour which bears all the traits of being repaired several times, he has two swords, a fine steel sword and a less used silver one, the silver is for ghosts and other unnatural beings, while steel is for those that do not require anything magical. If he wants to stay unnoticed he will wear a hooded cloak to hide his skin and scarred face.

Background: Varon was born to a dysfunctional family in a small village, his life went by without major incident until he was fifteen, it had always been hard, but he managed until then. It was at this age when a werewolf ran amok in the village, it killed his mother and left his father an inch from death. Although it was driven away, his father had the curse, and the village knew it, they killed him (though not against his will) and buried him nearby, Varon was distraught.

He stayed in his family's house, using his fathers sword he trained for the day that the werewolf came back, he bought himself some armour and got training from the best in the village. The werewolf did not come back, not for three years, but there came word from another village, it had struck there, and Varon decided it was time for retribution.

He travelled there and set up an investigation, his first ever one, it eventually led to the trail of a man who lived in a nearby cave, and Varon went there, expecting to put the guy out of his misery. But the man didn't go easy, no, there was a bloody fight between the pair of them, and though Varon managed to kill him, he was left severely injured.

He struggled back to the village, and they tried to heal him, though there seemed no hope. They called upon one of their finest mages, who brought him back to his house and worked on him through the night. The mage was not entirely who he seemed though, as Varon would find out, although he was barely concious, he can still remember the smell of the rotting flesh where he was operated on, he was brought back from near death but at a cost. His skin went deathly pale, and he feels like something is missing from himself, the necromancer brought him back from death, but what was he now?

He was still alive, thankfully, as the man explained to him a week later, but because the injuries had left his body's immune system completely ruined, the mage needed to work dark magic on it, and though it now works against small things, he is more susceptible to potions and poisons, thus he is a lot more cautious than your average man.

Since then, he doesn't fit into real society, and instead does what he did that night, hunts beasts, whether they are stray wolves or ghouls in a cave, he doesn't care, as long as the pay is good, he'll do the job.

Personality: Being on the move so much means that he doesn't need to establish any sort of friendship with anyone, he is cold and distant to most people, and his sense of humour is dark, but he is brave, and willing, he will accept responsibility in a group, and as a result some people have come to respect him and likewise he is not against respecting others. He does not care at all what people think of him. Because of his dark past, he has terrible, terrible nightmares and visions, and he needs to keep taking a weak drug to keep them at bay, if he forgets though, or cannot get the potion he needs, he is not safe to be around.

Other:

*-is very badly scarred
*-often wants more than money for doing hard jobs
*-jobs can take anything from a day to a week, depending on the amount of investigation that needs to go into them

Hum.
