What is live action?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 11:24 pm

The newly released 'Wanderer' trailer ->

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3IlHBBGCIw

is described ?as...'watch the world of Fallout 4 come to life in this live-action trailer'
Is that in-game footage, actors and green screen!?

Really is it that hard t??o put a 'Not actual gameplay' warning up?

Over at Total War they at least had the decency to put up a thorough write up of what is and isn't considered in-game footage?

It's pretty obvious it isn't gameplay.. There would be no need for a label to tell us that it is or isn't.

There is no need for such a disclaimer.

Yeah its not in game, just a really cool advert for f4 with live action meets CGI. Can't help but notice what an awesome Fallout movie would look like if they decided to make one.

They shouldn't have even needed to specify it was live action, it's obvious as soon as it shows the first scene it's not in game footage. What's wrong with you?

Oh, I wouldn't set the comprehension bar so high for many ;)
There's more than a few comments on the facebook page that think 'Live action' equates to 'live in-game footage'

I was just watching Dave Gorman's 'Modern Life is Goodish' the other night on Dave and he was pointing out the 'Not actual gameplay' on game adverts. This just struck a chord :)?

What is love?
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more

Live action usually insinuates something is acted out by people.

One of the closest Fallout-esque films I've seen in recent years is 'The Rover'
Okay it's short of FEV,? vaults, super mutants, ghouls, atomic warfare and a few other staples... but still watched it thinking it was pure Fallout ;)?

I think the rationale for this is that live action trailers yield higher levels of engagement to the general public than gameplay trailers. The level of polish and control (in terms of camera positions) is a lot better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1AenlOEXao and it was a pretty solid move for drawing in all audiences. Hopefully they have the same success with Fallout 4's.

Have at you!

And I agree, there's no need for a disclaimer. It's not their fault if some people doesn't know what live-action means.

Maybe it's just my aging, cynical, jaded opinion about the usefulness of CGI/ live-action glamour shots that have absolutely no representation of the game being purchased.
This close to release wha?t would get me hyped is some more footage of actual gameplay ;)

Skyrim was 4 years ago, ?the gap in fidelity between live-action and game was still noticeable and the trailer did not try to mimic gameplay.

This trailer on the othe?r hand seems to set out to mimic the third-person over the shoulder view of other game footage, and with the clout of PC gaming on 4k screens and the advances in effects is far closer to in-game.

I was kind of shocked at the number of commenters (on various gaming sites) who seemed to think that the trailer was in-game footage.

To me, it's obvious that the reason they labeled it as such is the ongoing tendency for game advertisemants to be less than honest about what is and what is NOT actual in-game footage and the backlash that video game "media" (quotes for the lack of disninction between professional media outlet and blogger / let's players with followings) can generate. Better for them to be in the full disclosure camp than to be mistakenly blamed for dishonest advertising tactics by someone that thinks they are posting it as in-game footage (don't think that some blogger wouldn't make that "mistake" just to get clicks, either).

Remember this is a business. They do not need to get YOU hyped. You are already buying the game.

This is to get the casual tv watcher interested. To jog their memory of 2008 when they played FO 3

It's a live-action trailer with tons of CGI. So, technically, it's both.

If you want to make a 'live action' trailer why go to such lengths to shoot it in the same style as in-game footage, especially the over the shoulder 3rd person view?

More positive note? I'm positive, I really liked the trailer. I've not pre-ordered the game yet. Still trying to make up my mind on taking the risk it will play reasonably well on my rig which lies more towards minimum spec than recommended.

What would really hype me is play footage of a minimum spec pc vs a recommended pc, that would be useful pre-release info for me. As it stands I'll probably wait till after launch and check out some You Tube footage.

So the Mr Handy at the start is real !?

I think they've been a bit more subtle and used some ingame models and ultra-res textures (probably for the high end PC market... those guys playing on 4k monitors) with the likes of the un-nuked street and some of the objects like the power armour at the end.

The choice to keep the main character in a similar aspect to in-game footage (over shoulder 3rd person) helps blur the line.
