What is Luck of the Irish going to do!?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 5:50 am

Luck of the Irish likely just increases the odds of a crit, eventually turning everything into a crit as a companion to Grim Reapers sprint filling the crit bar. That or it increases the quality of loot found on enemies killed with a crit?

If it's "Luck of the Irish" your Charisma with go up the more you drink, unfortunately there's a cut off moment where at some point you end up face down in the gutter in a pool of your our vomit wondering why the hell you didn't score with the bonny lass, as well as wondering why the hell she's gone to fetch her brothers to beat the living crap outta you

If it's the "Fighting Irish" then you gain hitpoints for every drink you have, but the chance you'll actually hit someone decreases incrementally until you're just standing there in the streets swinging aimlessly at a lamppost that wouldn't give you the time of day, until you eventually swing- miss- fall over, and end up as stated above, minus having the brothers of some bonny lass beat the crap outta you because lets face it, this is already embarrassing enough as it is.

/true story

edit:

it's true because the best mate I ever had the honor of fighting alongside in battle was a guy named Carl -who was Irish.

And he got me into more trouble than I really want to comment on within the confines of this forum.

Needless to say, life standing next to Carl was a hell of a lot more interesting than otherwise (just ask the Bangkok police)

Maybe it is a stand in for weird wasteland ?? (JUST Guessing dont hang me I know he looks like hes boxing, but there fiesty, that rainbow idea was clever to heheh points up)

It is rather high on the list, but if it is the only way you can obtain some Unique gear or random encounters why not. Specially if they do not trade out items ( as they did in NV Ie the merc plasma rifle OR the alien blaster) just stuff you have a chance at running across with this perk.

And with the ability to name weapons

"Faith and begorrah, with me wail-ey shillelagh I will knock some sense into those raiders."

P. S. And from my understanding of it finding any Sidhe is just about when your troubles start, or in the case of Leprechauns when your real work begins.

I think after taking this perk you will have a chance to do critical damage outside of VATS, rank 1 give you a critical chance equal to your Luck, rank 2 - 2* your Luck and rank 3 - 3* your Luck.

Oh no, I'm hoping whatever it is now they change it to what I wrote, or maybe the leprechaun uses a shillelagh instead since we don't have a melee VATS helper.

This thread reminds me of the awesomely long winded joke about the family, the cow, and the female leprechaun, lol!

Not really sure.. as I know the term, Luck of the Irish is finding positive in the negative. . It'd be something like.. "I fell down the stairs today and broke my leg!" and the reply would be "Well at least you didn't break both your legs." So really, it might be a perk that changes the worst thing you do in a sequence into like an accidental good thing.. like your gun jams but the raider who's about to throw a grenade at you accidentally blows himself up.

Could be.. would be quite entertaining if a leprechaun showed up, did a little jig and reversed the outcome of a critically bad situation. ..lol... Things are going horribly, you're about to die, time slows down, leprechaun appears, points his finger at you like a gun, winks and shoots a rainbow at you, time rewinds a bit and you get a second chance.

Or when your health drops below a point theres a chance a leperchaun appears and helps you fight, kinda like mysterious stranger outside of VATS but an unarmed leperchaun

I actually think that the title is different than I originally thought when I suggested it to Gkk7z, I believe, based on it's appearance, that it will likely be called Fightin' Irish. It just reminds me too much of Notre Dame and it fits better with the imagery by far. Luck of the Irish was based off the hazy image we had seen before, but now things have become much clearer, and this leads me to believe that the title has changed (sounds like a St Patty's Day experience in America).

Heheh Hey smiley, if you feel the urge to type it out you can send that joke to me doing the mail thingy. I grew up on bad Pat and mike jokes and dirty limericks told by a rather off and often drunk neighbor who hunted with my dad. So I am not thin skinned by nature. If you do I will send you the only 2 I think good Irish jokes I know when i have time to type em out... (they are actually rather clean to boot surprisingly )

* on topic Also I was not thinking about it having multiple slots.... If it does that would kill my guess right out. And to be honest I like the miss -fortune Idea a bit more than mine.

There is another, less appropriate meaning for the term 'fighting irish' that I wouldn't be able to post on here. Let's just say that it's not the kind of thing Bethesda would want associated with any of their games! For this reason, I think that the name Luck of the Irish is far more likely.

Actually, that is one of those things that has been converted into a badge of honor, if you are talking about the negative attitudes toward the Irish in America, and even possibly Europe, during the 18th and 19th Century all the way up to the 1960's.

Here is an excerpt from a Fr. Charles M Carey about the term in America, which has roots in Civil War and New England.

"Many people wonder (or worry) about Notre Dame and that word, Irish. To us, it doesn't mean race exclusively; nor is it just another nickname. The fact is, it keeps alive the memory of a long, uphill fight for recognition against a spirit that was not always generous, nor even fair-minded. The Irish, as known at Notre Dame, has an authentic history and a meaning deeper even than race.
Notre Dame began athletic relations chiefly with local colleges founded by various denominations. Press reports would refer to the schools as the “Baptists” or the “Methodists,” and the like. For Notre Dame it was the “Catholics,” or the “Irish.” But the players were never all of Irish ancestry; nor were they all Catholics.
The usage was not original, but a continuing custom from earlier Colonial times. The bulk of the first Catholic immigrants were Irish -- so that Catholics and Irish were identical in the public mind. It is sad to recall now, but few of the original states were without laws against them. Advertisemants for ‘help wanted’ commonly carried the restriction: “No Catholics. No Irish.” The Puritans were the first to cry: “Stop the Irish!”
When the religious origin of other colleges lost its significance, the emphasis shifted to conventional names, and to their school colors. But history is recorded remembrance in our blessed heritage here at Notre Dame. Fighting Irish! It’s more than a name; more than a people. It is the Faith!
In narrow, little New England, it began as a slur -- a term of opprobrium. But we took it up and made of it a badge of honor -- a symbol of fidelity and courage to everyone who suffers from discrimination; to everyone who has an uphill fight for the elemental decencies, and the basic Christian principles woven into the texture of our nation. Preserving this tradition, and this meaning of Irish at Notre Dame does honor to everyone of us. It explains why Lewinski belongs here; why Alessandrini is the Irish leader; why Schmaltz belongs here; why Bertrand, and Moreau, Van Dyke, and Larson feel at home here as much as do Leahy and O’Brien."

Now I understand that in N. Ireland, there may be reasonable issues with the term, due to recent history, but generally it is not particularly offensive. But as a counter to why Bethesda would not necessarily hesitate to name a perk Fighting Irish, you only have to look at the Brahmin. There is a reason that the game has issues in India. Additionally, it was used in conjunction with the Irish bid for independence from the British Empire. Many people wonder if it is considered a slur, but it pretty much agreed that it has transitioned due to the Irish-Americans and Early 20th Century Irish decision to use it as a banner against discrimination.

Additionally, the stance and the addition of the punching bag, within the context of the Era (including the history of Fr. Carey being that he was a central figure at Notre Dame in the 1950's), would seem to indicate that the name Luck of the Irish doesn't quite fit the imagery or historical reference. As a very American-centric game, and with the deep history of the term, like the Fighting 69th of New York, a brigade of Irish-Americans who fought in the Civil War, being the possible origin of the term.

The alternative meaning I was referring to was definitely not the one you mentioned here! (I genuinely can't post it, but I have sent you a PM).

I do think you're right, especially with the additional supporting evidence you have provided here, and so I will change the name and the description on http://vault111.com. Although after reading my message, you may never look at the Fightin' Irish mascot in quite the same way

Now it can be confirmed: The main character has an alternate Irish accent file. The conclusion is obvious.

As an actual Irish person this thread is so cringe worthy to read. Please if any of you ever go to Ireland do not say any of these jokes you'll be laughed at and made to look like a fool hahaha.

I'm gonna say it gives some sort of bonus for fighting unarmed.

Also, Fighting Irish is trademarked...

You get to play in the last football game of the season and every NPC in the arena chants your character name.
