What Lurks Beyond

“What kind of god would allow us to survive in this hell?”

Backstory:

“It’s been so long since those fateful months. Those were the ones that changed history. The ones that spelled damnation for the New California Republic—the nation I’ve devoted my life to.

It’s been? God, has it really been fifty years already? I remember hearing about him when I still lived in Shady Sands with my parents. Courier Six. Every other week, I’d read about his exploits in the papers.

“Courier Six negotiates treaty between Great Khans and NCR Troops!” or “Courier Six saves President Kimball!” God, the man was a hero. But God has a twisted sense of humor, you know? Courier Six gave us our victory at the Dam and it was that victory that destroyed us.

We expanded eastward into the Mojave Territory with full force—devastating anyone who stood in our way. A team of NCR Rangers even ended up killing Caesar as he tried to escape into the night with a frumentarii by the name of Vulpes Inculta.

We just kept going. Sweeping aside any resistance with ease. But we were clueless. We expanded farther than we ever should have. And for what? For what gain? Simple answer? There wasn’t any.

The past few decades have been rough on the Republic. President Lee’s expansionism combined with the political corruption in Shady Sands has led to the decay. It was in 2301 that we saw the first states secede. Vault City seceded from the Republic. Klamath, the Hub, and several others followed suit.

That’s when Lee decided it’d be a good idea to enforce martial law, conscription, and a general fascist agenda complete with aims to forcibly re-add the seceded states. In a week, we had barricaded all trade from each seceded state and waited them out as they starved.

It was when they signed a treaty that essentially gave up their basic human rights that we allowed them food once more. But Lee’s focus on this left him ignorant of what really mattered. The small little attacks on the outskirts of the Republic.

They began small anyways. Small enough to go under the radar. But soon it was several people at a time, then entire villages. One would look upon the remains of the village and see a ghost town—everyone just gone.

It’d be one thing if it was just one village or two. But it progressed to consume entire states through attrition. Now here we are—2331 and what does the New California Republic consist of? Shady Sands and about a hundred square miles—everywhere else has lost communication and anyone sent out that far disappears.

That’s why you’re going out there. The First Infantry Division is all that’s left of Lee’s Army besides for a few aviators and support personnel. That’s why they’re being sent to find out what it is. They’re the last hope for the New California Republic, for if they can’t stop it—this plague will abjure them from the wastes.

Plot:

You are a member of the 1st Battalion of the 1st Infantry Division and as such are being sent into the Hub. Or what could be said to be left of it. Your role in this is that you are all a member of the same squad. There are billets for players to choose from in the RP. It is ideal that we have one of each and no repeats.

-Infantry Non-Commissioned Officer (Sergeant/Corporal): You are the leader of the squad when not in the presence of a more senior NCO or Officer. You will be issued a Service Rifle.

-Automatic Rifleman (Lance Corporal): You are the squad’s second-in-command and use an automatic rifle (e.g. AK-47 (Assault Rifle)) to perform suppressive fire and neutralize threats.

-Combat Medic (Private First Class): You fill the role of the squad’s medical expert. You are expected to be able to do whatever necessary to keep your men alive, including using lethal force to neutralize enemy threats.

-Assaultman (Private First Class): You are the squad’s heavy weapons expert. You will be issued a heavy weapon to use during your mission.

-Designated Marksman (Private First Class): You fill the role of a sniper within the squad. While your emphasis is more close-range, you provide cover fire and protect your squad from afar when possible.

-Rifleman (Private First Class): You are a standard rifleman. You use a semi-automatic rifle and are damned good at using it.

Rules:

-There is a certain plot I have in mind, but it is not set in stone. Your actions will determine how the story should progress.

-It will be run with certain similarities to a Dungeons & Dragons campaign in that I will fill a role as a controller of non-player characters while not playing any one character myself. This is to smoothly progress the plot.

-Attempt to not create an uber character. You are a standard Infantry Unit—not First Recon or Rangers. Maybe (most likely) you were forced to join due to Lee’s conscription policy. Maybe you don’t even want to be doing this and you think it’s not right!

-Alert us all when you will be absent for an extended period of time. It allows us to progress and it is appreciated when you can help that.

-Accept your position within the squad, but do not abuse it—unless it’s in character. Remember that it is just an RP and that you have no actual power over the other person (contrary to the real military where sergeants need only speak to your commanding officer and then crap hits the fan).

Oh a new RP, I want to join.. But I'm not sure how active I can be in this, at the least I could post would be every other day or so. I'll work on a CS in the meantime.
