What Makes Me Mad about the Hands-On Articles

Post » Wed Aug 10, 2011 8:50 pm

Almost every one of the journalists that had the chance to play skyrim for an hour, did almost the same exact [censored] thing! They go down the rocky hill, see Riverwood, cross the river, go up the mountain side, kill bandits in a tower, and go to bleak falls barrow. If I would have seen Bleak Falls Barrow I would have walked right passed it looking for something that wasn't shown before. And a cookie goes to the ones who did something different.

This is an interesting point. It may mean actually that the starting region is more restrictive than we think - the geography may be pushing people to the same locations. In a way it makes sense - Morrowind landed us in the city, small one, but still, Oblivion had the IC so close it was impossible to miss, maybe they are truing to guide the player to some kind of settlement this time as well?

Maybe there's just something about where they started, and the way the gameworld is designed that just lured them that way.

We already know the gameworld will be quite path-heavy, purely because of the mountains and how steep they are.

Yea, I guess Riverwood is Skyrim's reincarnation of Seyda Neen, but if I was playing it, I would have went to a region never stepped in before and explore it.

The ones that followed the 'E3 path' it seems either did it because they knew hardly anything of Skyrim (and one of the first quests you get in riverwood sends you there) then others, for some reason beyond me, wanted to go there because they've seen it before. Fair play the ones who explored off the beaten path, the ones that did the E3 path just made me feel like I was reading a journalists impression of the E3 footage all over again...

It was kind of annoying, but i remember there was that one hands-on guy who found that riddle-door that Todd loved so much. I believe he also made it to whiterun.

It's just common sense to head toward a settlement, you don't have to but hey it's you're choice.

Hats off to reiner from gameinformer for taking the path less traveled

Hes the one who discovered the black door
And stole the horse which proved guards arent all knowing anymore
I think he also confirmed chicken eggs
Honeycombs
Moths
Bugs
And how alchemy works
He also is the only one who made it to whiterun and on top of that made it to a second village further along ahead

Hats off to him

Sounds to me like all the journalists walked forward from their starting point. I would have turned around and went the opposite direction.

Ah yes that was the guy i was thinking of. I really do wish he had figured out that riddle and we could've seen what was behind the door, but it was a great hands-on nonetheless considering how everyone just went start>riverwood>bandits>bleak falls barrow

I laughed at thit because when I first left the Imperial sewer I thought I had been dumped in the middle of nowhere and actually set off looking for the Imperial city when it was right behind me!

OT: I think if any of the reviewers had any idea what the others were doing they would have went on completely different paths.

It makes sense, people that are more familiar with the series or have seen others articles would probably try something different. They want people to read their articles right? Need to do something interesting but at the same time don't want to waste time. If saving was an option, I'd probably save before every "interesting" point and do something wrong, then revert and do it a different way.

Personally i suspect the black riddle door is either the Dark Brotherhood or the Volkihar Vampires. Either way its going to be awesome.

it was the one from IGN
http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/118/1186214p1.html

the guy IS a fan of the ES games as he seemed pretty accustomed to the mechanics of the elder scrolls series during the preview

In all of the demo footage we've seen Bleak Falls Barrow seems to loom in the distance as if beckoning the PC "hey, look at me...check me out!"

This all feels very intentional for demo purposes.

Haven't even played the game yet and already got Bleak Falls fatigue. :yuck:

You haven't read much hands on articles then, most of them went on different ways.

And they start at the exact same area, so yeah, they are going to find many similar things...

Out of 20+ journalists who did the demo, only about 3 of them ended up in Bleak Falls Barrow

What? We were supposed to go to the Imperial City early in Oblivion? In my first playthrough, the Imperial City was the last place I visited... Then again, I played Arena because it was free while I waited for my graphics card to arrive, which taught me you don't want to go the Imperial City after escaping the Imperial Dungeons.

I think Gamespy was my favorite hands-on, with his single-handed mentality of "go north." I think he went through Riverwood, because "due north" ended up in him dying climbing a mountain.
