What makes you SPECIAL? Endurance!

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 6:08 pm

All of the videos can be found on http://bethesda.net/#en/events/game/fallout-4-special-video-series/2015/09/10/24. The Endurance video just came out! And here it is on https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=5&v=paYU1neP3xM, for anyone that's particular.

I'm a little bummed that Cannibalism is still on the perk chart instead of being reward through character actions; I was planning on filling out every perk in Endurance for my character, but I have no intention of ever being a cannibal. Regardless, it's not surprising.

What is surprising is the emphasis this video puts on food and water. Do you think Bethesda incorporated some kind of needs mechanic, like hardcoe mode in New Vegas?

Wait? Cannibalism is tied to endurance?

I don't think it's the Cannibal perk, I think it's a new perk that covers all meat. This would make sense, as many people would not wish to engage in cannibalism, but would still want to take all Endurance perks. As such, I had already pre-empted this by adding a new perk called Carnivore, which I will now update to add the cannibalism feature

You need a tough gut to be able to eat some things, man. But yeah. Looking at the chart (or what blurry references we have), it requires 8 Endurance. Plus, it's fitting that Endurance would be the stat that governs any buffs you get from food items in general.

God I hope not.

I am thinking its going to be more like the survival skill from NV, where higher endurance, or an endurance perk, gives you more HP from food items.

It's probably nothing more than the old mechanics of food and water recovering HP. Endurance probably affects how much HP you recover from them or, as it said, opens up new and better options for recovering HP.

I agree with Possum. I think certain perks will just get you more benefit from eating and drinking, sort go like a higher skill in Science or Medicine (don't remember which right now) in FO3 gets you bigger return with stimpacks.

I hope this means built in needs for food and water. One less thing to mod.

I don't necessarily mean there will be hardcoe needs meters you have to micromanage like in hardcoe mode, just that Bethesda actually made food items useful. At https://youtu.be/paYU1neP3xM?t=55s in the video during the "diagram" bit we can see the fluid in the spinning gear going down as Vault Boy gets irradiated and takes damage - and then when he nourishes himself, it restores. Thinking about it, though, that's probably just an elaborate way to say "radiation/damage lowers your health and food/water restores it", and I'm not keen on a separate meter even if it wasn't something I had to worry about.

Man, I just want food to be useful. Is that too much to ask? At any rate, it can't just be the "HP +6, Rads +3" sort of food items we got in Fallout 3; with how radiation directly reduces your maximum health, that would just be damn counter-intuitive.

Exactly this. And not just restore HP (which unfortunately is probably all it will do)

While it probably just means that food/water heals damage, I do hope that a hardcoe Mode is included, for those of us that want it.

So a perk that lets us hold our breath longer? Pretty interesting. Also I believe the "food and water" thing is just tied to health, I doubt they would make it a constant thing like hardcoe NV.

Why should food be useful?

Does eating a sandwich IRL give you some special powers? Nope. Now, does taking actual drugs designed to produce said special powers do so? Yes.

Food shouldn't be useful in the game, not at least compered to DRUGS.

I don't know it made it sound like you need food and water to keep your body going, not to recover from some injury.

I am pretty much convinced that the Perk shown is for cannibalism since that's the only thing it shows him eating. If it was just meat in general I believe other types of meat would have been shown. Total waste of a perk though as I'll never pick it.

EDIT: No I take that back. The guy did get injured FIRST, then took food and water to heal up. Looks like food and water are just for healing, not maintenance.

I hope so but I also hope it's an option. Lots of people don't seem to like having to eat n' sleep in video games. I like it a lot though. It adds more of a survival feeling even if it is just a silly game mechanic.

Interesting statement I heard.

Food and water might be a primary need in Fallout 4 because of this.

food/water means that primary needs is going to be in the base game, or if it's just a reference to using food as a means to heal and thus being able to consume other things as well for that.

there is a food station... so it wouldn't surprise me if food and water is needed. I always used food and water as my main source for healing anyway.

So, the more yards/meters you run with high endurance, the less often you fatigue when sprinting?

>.> What I mean is, if they're going to fill the game with tons of different food items, crafting stations dedicated to food, and perks/stats tied to food, I want a reason to actually eat. I don't need the game to make me eat/drink/sleep/piss like a real human being, but it's always nice when the gameplay mechanics are designed in such a way that I'm just playing the game and that happens to semi-realistically cover whatever needs aren't assumed to be happening off-screen (like pissing).

I think it just means, the higher our Endurance, the longer we can sprint. In the E3 footage when they filled out the character's SPECIAL, the Endurance description said something along the lines of Endurance governing the AP cost of sprinting.

Useful as in "you'll die if you don't eat and sleep and drink!" If you're sick, eating and drinking will also make you "heal" faster. Food and water does a lot for the human body.

There should be some purpose for food. Otherwise, there is no reason for it to be there in the first place. In Fallout 3, there was absolutely no benefit for choosing to heal oneself with food rather than stimpacks. New Vegas and the survival skill actually made food relevant in the game.
