What MMO mechanics drive you crazy? A Preventative tale.

Post » Fri Aug 07, 2009 5:14 pm

This is a Topic for the exchanging what makes you Frustrated, Angry, Irate, Apathetic and generally disappointed with an MMO? Every one knows my reputation for being a downer... so let's take those negative feelings and turn them into a something positive. :D

I really Dislike any MMO that makes me run MILES AND MILES AND MILES in game with nothing but wilderness and random monsters. I know that a large map gives a sense of vastness, but please I gotta run into something interesting running around. Otherwise I might aswell just set myself to auto run and make myself a sandvich.

Alright let a rip and let all developers of MMO's be warned. ;) Another drunk conquistador conquering the governor's ball...

What I dislike the most in general is when you are running in the "wilderness" and somehow it consists of a few giant trees that are spread incredibly far away from each other and all the space between is filled with random monsters that is just standing there and doing nothing until someone walks by and starts to hit them/or they attack a passerby...

Second think would be missions i think, even if mmo-games say they have made their missions story driven etc etc it usually always boil down to go to point X, between you and point X there are Y monsters, you will most likely have to kill them, when you reach point X, press something and the mission is done, gratz, oh we also did a huge wall of text as the missionbriefing so you most likely wont read it, you will probably just look to where you are supposed to go and not care about the story what-so-ever.

That is what I usually dislike. Image

Excellent thread, never ever seen one before.

ok, i get annoyed by alot of things.

1. Mobs shooting through solid objects.
2. Mobs move vertically in a manner monkeys and mountaineers are envious of in order to get you. Once the combat situation is resolved they limp or whatever back to their scripted spawning points.
3. Mobs aggro while you′re sneaking even if they are not supposed to.
4. Mobs react faster than instant abilities. Often when you′re near death.
5. Mobs "floating" on the battlefield at the speed of light in order to reach melee range and spam their attacks. Little or no regard to AP, combat initiative etc.
6. In Fallout 2, if the game really want to get you the random encounters on the world map spam like nothing on this earth until you either died or killed enough mobs in order for it to backoff. If you died then you have EZ mode for a while. The mob groups composition when this happens are sometimes non canon like Unity groups patrolling Vault City. Unity patrol, Dogs, rad scorpions, moonshiners and Mantises fighting alongside in order to get you etc. Before turning on eachother.
7. Mobs spam attacks seemingly as if they had unlimited ammo and no AP costs. No sets of rules to combat like the players have.
8. Mobs do not recieve the correct amounts of damage. You can hit a mob for 100 damage and it′s registred but in reality it was 57.
8. Damage has "first strike" on healing. Meaning if you have 10 hitpoints and using a stimpack, adding 8 hitpoints, and a mob manages to hit (interrupt) you while you′re doing it those 8 are ignored and if the mob does more than 10 damage you die. The stimpack is considered used so it′s gone.
9. Mobs moving, snareing and landing attacks at the same time. Players rarely are able to move and attack at the same time.
10. Mobs managing to move, attack, use an ability and heal itself at the same time in combat.
11. Mob AoE effect that have a timer eventhough it persist as long as the player stand in it.
12. Useless SPECIAL, skills, abilities, traits, perks and equippments.
13. Healing vs damage again...if you have 100 hitpoints and get hit for 20 (normal damage) and heal yourself for 15 using combat initiative or Aps to do that the mob then gets a 25 damage hit and you heal for 15 hitpoints again. then the mob gets 3 critical hits in a row with increasing damage numbers 40, 50 and 65. (WoW has this alot. In some cases where bosses paralyzes the entire party while damage you and "cheating" with the timer so the party wipes....when that happends the server auto ressurect you and make the party immune to the damage while the boss ability lasts then it′s combat as usual. GMs say "it works as intended it′s just server lag".
14. Mobs auto aiming at the head with critical hits in any light setting from any distance often through solid objects.
15. Server lag. (Not a mechanic i know but i′m frustrated about it nontheless).
16. Mobs hit you and sometimes kill you while you′re spawning in a combat zone.

Constantly getting told by every NPC that i'm the 'chosen one, our savior, the only one who can do it, ect' just like every other PC who comes to that NPC. It just really erks me that NPCs typically label everyone as the 'chosen one', but last i checked, thier could only be one 'chosen one'.

NPCs should treat us like the completely expendable dime a dozen gofers we are.

And along those lines, quests with the words 'urgent' 'hurry' 'emergency' or anything else which basically tells you "You need to do this right away!" How urgent can it really be when you saw 5 people complete the quest just while you were accepting it?

17. Useless SPECIAL, skills, abilities, traits, perks and equippments. Second reason: The developers rendering these useles due to buttdung combat balancing reasons.
18. AI controlled NPC group members. (I′ve could′ve shot Sulik in the back several times in FO2 and sold his meat to that Doc.Morbid guy). Alot of the time these defunct AI NPC behaviors, especially in combat, wipes the groups or ruin escort quest missions. "HEY! DUDE! GET BACK HERE ASAP!" doesn′t seem to work.
19. Fog of War....you stand on a world map grid and are supposed to get an exposure of another grid but you don′t. If you move there it may happens that it′s still not exposed, when you continue it gets exposed.
20. Mobs that casually move about randomly do so in your general direction in order to be involved in any agressive negotiation that might be taking place.
21. Fallout 2- When the game really want to get you it tend to spawn you in the middle of 10-15 mobs instead of at the edges of the map. This regardless of the level in outdoorsman skill you might have. When the game had it′s meds and cool-aids it′s back to normal again.
22. The second on various cooldown timers ticks away in a different pace from one another. A second is not a second for combat balancing purposes, works as intended.
23. Debuff timer tick slower the closer to 0 you get. At 0 the second last between 1.5-2 seconds.
24. A boss mob with 145 million hitpoints lame attacks and no significant intelligent AI.
25. Fallout Tactics- Sneak glitches to the sneak skill when in turn based combat mode. (You start sneaking 2Aps then move to location. When you hit the [Finished] button you exit sneak mode as the next player gets to do his/hers turn).
26. Mobs max range on ranged attacks while the player is running away from combat gets stretched with no regard for any weapon or perception caps there might be.
27. Mobs shooting while the player tries to hide behind a wall or door or a f**ing mountain gets to watch a guided misslie hitting for crit damage and often cripple your leg so you woun′t move as fast. Then you see this mob come running...
28. Breaks for a movie sequence in combat (this for RP reason of course) so when you return you′re dead because the mobs are still in the combat fighting you.
29. Mobs add spawning with the sole reason to finish you off then despawn as you enter the death view mode.
30. Mobs spawning in the exact same location, sometime even before you killed the first one, while you′re trying to kill the first one.

31. The game tries to spawn mobs at your exact location in order to slow down your retreat. Of course despawning them as the chase progresses.
32. Timed quests. I shouldn′t be annoyed by this but i am. Due to the defunct timers in the gaming world.
33. Retarded ingame Tech Support. Tickets with useless timers and a standard reply "works as intended".
34. That would be it.

We are the same as every other player that joins. Being "the only one who can save us" hero is for single player games.

This is the worst way to develop a story in a graphical RP game. There might as well be no written text since most people won't read it. And those who do may appreciate getting the story in a more modern fashion. Somehow I feel that video games have moved beyond clicking on an icon to get a text box to continue to the game.

Yeah ok i had another one...

35. Guild invites, especially random ones poping up during combat. "HEY! random guy invites you to his guild what is your response?" [Yes] [No] with a interaction box in the middle of the screen. If you press No then another box appear "are you sure?" [Yes] [No], If you press no then you start over again, so don′t. After pressing yes another box appear "Message has been sent to whom it concenrns" [Ok] [Cancel]. If you press cancel then it all starts all over again,so don′t. If you press ok then another box appear "You have a great day now!" [Ok] [Cancel]. And if you finally press ok the boxes disappear and you return to the ongoing combat discovering that 40% of the group is dead and screaming "HEALER WTF ARE YOU DOING!!!!!!!!!!!", and you go "Ummm, i had a guild invite which i turned down".

And a few more...

36. Paralyzed mobs still moving around while attacking players.
37. Playerbase build times that varies from the NPCs. (NPC gets to build at aprox 30-40% of the time required unlike the players).
38. Mobs running outside the defined game area out of reach in order to attack the player.

What I dislike are MMOs that following the typical MMORPG model to a T. I dislike having to button spam to cast spells or use abilities, or have nothing new in terms of challenges or designs. The quest I do at level 84 in Uldum is the same god damn reskinned quest I have been doing for the past 2 expansions + the original game. I'm just try tired at the fantasy MMORPG genre. Pressing 123412345123 is not complexity or fun or innovative. Image

And that, my friend, is probably the biggest reason i don't play MMOs for the most part, although i've tried almost every one. If i wanted to push numbers all day, i'd use my calculator.

Chat restrictions.
Tiny HUDs.
Gigantic HUDs.
Complex HUDs.
Lack of any real ability (or reason) to quickly change weapons. But this is Fallout, I shouldn't really worry about this.
Immature/Incompetent group members. Not the devs fault, but it is something I dislike.
Lack of any real RPG elements.
Lack of character variety.
I think there should be multiple appearances of different kind of armors (or at least different, changeable colors).
There should also be different reasons to wear armor lighter than Powered towards "endgame" (In this case level cap). These things could include movement speed, Agility/Strength bonuses/penalties, stuff like that.

There is probably more stuff that I can't think of right now. I put the 'Skill' in 'Kill.'
Wait, what?

what annoys me is onpen world pvp. it wouldn't be so bad if the high levels weren't infested by douche bags that say "hey guys let's go pick on the low levels so everyone can see how cool we are.". the fact that there's no point to open world pvp other than to annoy other players that are just trying to get a quest done annoys me too. There aren't related only to MMO's, but games in general:

Invisible walls.
Not enough dialogue options.
Basically any restriction the game puts on the player. For example, some games you try to pick something up and it says "you don't need that right now." That makes the game a lot less fun. I don't need the game to think for me.

juicy topic, i like it. i noticed that a lot of these complaints seem to be directed at the same game lol. but some of these are repetitions i'm sure of what others have said.
1)i too hate this push-button combat model that seems to be cloned into every major game that comes out. click eneemy to engage, use power button 1,2,3 etc blah blah, wait for the timer to finish rinse and repeat zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
2)unmoderated chat channels. call me a purist but trade chat is for trade NOT bulllying, bigoted remarks, discussions about god and religion, insecure children(and often times even advlts) looking for attention etc etc. trade chat is for trade, lfg is for looking for groups, guild chat is for guilds and so on.. someone abuses the channel, ban them from it in ever increasing increments till they get the hint.
3)lousy craft systems that are overshadowed by the global loot matrix, or rely on player controlled economies. sorry all would be ceo's and stockbrockers, this is a game, so overinflating prices so only the rich can afford to buy/use it is assinine. i'd prefer a different system altogether(and yes i have 2 systems developped on my own). that fairly new player who just started crafting and finds a recipe that involves material from a different profession is screwed because he can't afford the ridiculous prices in the markets or AH's is just a small example of what's wrong. i could type another 50 lines just on this but i'm pressed for time atm.
4)though i'm not habitually one who rp's a lot, i get annoyed at people invading an rp server and not actually rp'ing. in fact they invade the rp server and make fun and ridicule the rp'ers!!??. limit the rp servers, but enforce them!! i know from talking to some of these idjits, that they assume there are very few rpr's and figure they can run the server with their guilds. get out and go to a reg server clown shoes! and let the rpr's do what they enjoy. as long as they don't attempt to butcher the king's english(and make poor shakespeare twitch in his grave :) )

i swear i had 1 or 2 more peeves but they've gone poof! from my noggin. to be continued at a later date when it repoofs into my brain

For MMOs, grinding. While technically you don't always have to grind, you often end up doing it, since traveling to another area to do other quests simply isn't worth it, when you know there is another questline in your current area.

Also, the lack of fast travel makes me puke. And quests without any point to them, tie "everything" together.

A note to that #4 you had, galahad1313 .

2001 when i played Fallout Tacitcs on GSA there were these groups...1k, 2k,10k, RP etc chracter players (1k = 1000 total character points. Level and equippments). Those 10k characters were drugged up exploit engineered builds to represent the PvP community. An RP comminty formed too and they did good...only thing was that these 10k "PvP" players invaded the rp games and made fun and ridicule the rp'ers. The RP community asked me to join them and stand up for them, since i was a guild leader of one of the big guilds at that time, the TRW one (alot of our members were in that 10k character community) . I did and those 10k players stopped, turning on me instead. "You′re soft man wtf is up man!" etc. Then the Fallout Tactics cooperation mod and World War II mod came about and these RP guys didnt find enough players so that side of the community died.

What GSA (Gamespy Arcade) did to combat bullies etc was to make veteran players [HELPER]s in the game chat room. Some of them became corrupted and used that [HELPER] tag to build their own reputation among the playerbase. In essance they joined these 10k bullying players because of those selfish reasons. I fought these [HELPERS] on numerous occations and in the end someone hacked GSA and used mine and others names to ruin the reputation we had to the point GSA officials banned us.

Point is, it′s hard to do anything about this. I′ve thought about this and i can′t find an answer...the EULA doesn′t seem to help either. Just get a new account and a new name and business as usual.

Wouldn′t mind hearing from an gamesas official about the plans regarding this in Fallout Online.

1. I hate ambient life/creatures and NPC monsters not behaving like the predator and prey roles they are... like a pack of wild dogs ignoring a herd of wild brahmin but they will aggro you as one group.

2. I HATE BoA (Bound On Aquire), if I want to sell my old hand-me-downs I should... RL like that. I understand when "crafting" system gotten more suffisticated and re-selling stuff ruined "crafted" gear value but it's unrealistic.

3. I hate NPCs and Town citizens just standing around 24/7 same spot with no place to go... people get up, work/adv, close up shop/go home and sleep.

4. I Hate poor AI pathing, internet 100x faster, computers uber faster, tons of ram/resourses and Developers still settle for archaic scripted AIs with work arounds/cheats to avoid creating real solutions (Teleporting NPCs to warp through obsticals, shoot through walls, insta-reset).

5. How do we really carry 8 Backpacks, 99 Missile rounds, and Man I thought I had trouble carrying 10 guns !? (references to EQ/Quake/Duke Nukem). ;)

ripflex, weight will ALWAYS be screwed up in games, especially in RP and MMOs.
Thank god this is a game, and that a person can carry a lot more than a normal real person could.

I wouldn't say 'always'. I'm hoping FO will break this mold a bit. Weight should definately be a very limiting factor in a game where the whole idea is scavenging from the wastes.

Well, with my uniform, boots, vest, helmet, 7 mags (28 rounds each), front and back plates, med kit, 3l water and a few do-dads, is about 20kg. Add my rifle, which is another 4kg (which is a modern, light rifle, not some heavy post apoc weapon). Add my backpack with more ammo, water, food and other nice to have items, you are looking at around 20kg (a recon setup in a 120l backpack is more like 40-60kg).
Keep in mind that I also have a resupply system behind me.

Let's say that I carry a total of 45kg to make the math easy, that's almost 2/3 of my bodyweight (I'm a small guy, you could say that it's half a mans weight in equipment needed in a war scenario). Now, where the hell do I pack the rest of the stuff I scavenge? And how the hell do I carry it 10km back home? Am I a supermutant?

Realistic weights and load limitations svck, and I'd like to be able to actually do a mission without having to go back and resupply every 10 minutes since I'm out of ammo...
