Duke Patrick's SCA Combat Archery - excellent mod, I installed it recently and it really improves the ranged combat experience

Yes, judging from this mod, ranged combat in Skyrim is going to be sick

I never used it, but the mod itself sounds awesome, and if Bethesda drew inspiration from that, we're in for a pretty great archery experience.

I only hope they have both Shortbows and Longbows as opposed to just "Bows". I believe the extra effort to spice up the variety is more than justified in this case.

Oh, I missed the bit where Beth said the archery in Skyrim was inspired by a mod. Can you please link the source? If it really is that mod, then...wow!

Wheeee! This mod has been on my list of absolute essentials since it was first released. Now, I can't even imagine playing Oblivion without it.

It's really, really nice that Bethesda is aware of its own modding community and is not above acknowledging that someone has done their job much better than they did. Many developers seem to ignore the community input, but it's good to know that Bethesda takes at least some of it to heart.

Because it wasnt inspired by a mod...

It was, I remember Todd talking about it in either that lengthy podcast (which I'm too lazy to link or even look for) or that German interview (available on youtube).

Or perhaps I'm just another victim of mass hysteria, but I like the 'it really happened!' version better.

Well, your wrong, it wasnt inspired by a mod... (Not to mean it wont be just a s bloody awesome as that mod, but it doesnt mean that the mod "inspired" them to change the archery system, they most likely did it on there own...)

After playing an Oblivion mod that turned the bow and arrow into a formidable weapon capable of one-hit kills, Bethesda decided to adopt that approach.

"Compared to Morrowind and Oblivion, Skyrim’s bows are increasingly differentiated from melee choices. Bethesda took inspiration from a popular community mod by turning up arrow damage but making ammunition scarce. Players may only have one shot, but if it lands, the result is devastating, increasing the role of stealth in the archer’s skill set."

It's great to think that they really respect mod makers, and that fills me with hope that the new CS will be improved to go with the new game engine and also the possiblity that they will push hard to get mods onto consoles.

I actually helped Duke Patrick with his original Combat Archery mod (in a small way). After playing his SCA Melee Combat mod, and seeing how much he improved melee combat, I persuaded him to tackle bows . . . he agreed, as long as I promised to help him (all I did was the lore research on the various materials used to craft the different bows and arrows, which were used in damage, flight, and impact calculations, and I got to play tested his changes before the mod was released, and provide feedback that he used to fine tune things). Duke Patrick has some amazing mods for Oblivion . . . and it is very cool that some of his combat archery mod's changes are going to end up in Skyrim.

The cool thing is that the modder wasn't aware Bethesda would be using it, but the day Todd's interview was published that mentioned this happened to be Duke Patrick's birthday.

@Arwen, wow, it's certainly a good thing you pushed him in that direction and thanks for helping to make this excellent mod

From what I heard, the bow and arrow are really powerful. They said that Todd shot a bandit in the head and he went down instantly. This is awesome since I love using the arrows to get some damage in before they get to me

The way it works with the mod, I also get one-shotted by enemies frequently, so you have to be very cautious approaching archers.

I think Skyrim will probably be more challenging than Oblivion for a character with no ranged weapons or spells.
