That'd be 2001. I love Polo's. Great little car. I currently have a 1.0 litre N-reg Polo, so 1995. 20 years old and only done around 40,000 miles. Very good car, very reliable. I also have a 2.0 litre 3 series BMW touring, also a recommended car. Lots of room for IKEA furniture and ISOFIX points, unlike the polo which came out before they existed.

My first car was a 1999 Hyundai Accent. 1.5 litres and very light, so the acceleration was quite good. Handling was a good but the brakes were a bit mushy. Eventually everything began failing in succession, so that my MOT went from costing £100 or so to £800 and it became unaffordable to keep it. Also the doors liked to lock themselves, which was fine as I am able to break into Accents (and lots of cars) through the boot using only a screwdriver if ever I locked my keys in, which happened once or twice a year, but then some idiot neighbour decided she would play with the child locks on the rear doors. The car suddenly became totally unusable for rear passengers.

Next car I'm looking at is a replacement for my aging 1995 Polo. Maybe another polo, but new this time. Or a Golf if I can afford one. And to replace the BMW in a couple of years I'm looking at a new Audi A7 sportsback.

Im surprised at how many people's first cars were Ford Mustangs. I imagine they're not too reliable and they must cost a fortune to run, although I guess your fuel prices are better than they are here. At the moment we are paying about £1.15, $1.80 per litre where I live. That's cheap though - fuel prices have decreased a lot over the last few years.

I grew up with IH Scouts! My Dad was a huge fan of them so we always had one in our stable, along with a Buick of some kind :)

Well, assuming that the people whose first cars were Ford Mustangs are 30 or older, gas was dirt cheap back then(79-99 cents a gallon). For my Chevy Cavalier I could fill my entire tank up with $8-$9. My best friends first car was a Ford Mustang and he never had to worry about gas himself and he and his family were dirt poor back then. If anything it was his tendency to rip and tear in the thing that ended up being expensive, he went through 2 motors and a transmission from what I remember.

I miss gas that cheap....would be so wonderful to be able to go on a day-long car trip and only pay $10-$15 in gas.

Oh, yeah, sorry, I meant the other Y-reg! I bought it in 1988 when I was 20 years old; I can even remember the reg, http://regarchive.com/plate/JHK44Y, which now comes with a handy link saying it was registered in Chelmsford in 1982/83.

It had about 100,000 miles on the clock (plus a new gearbox, and got through two new alternators and other bits while enduring my driving) before my mother took it on and used it for another 10-20,000 miles.
