What next, Bethesda?

Post » Sun Sep 06, 2015 9:29 pm

Just saw the news report saying there will not be another Elder Scrolls game for a long time, if ever.

I currently have two go-to games - Skyrim and Fallout 3 / NV (TTW).

Fallout 4 looks great - but about June of next year I am going to need a new Bethesda fix. At least an announced title to anticipate.

With no Elder Scrolls 6 on the horizon, what does Bethesda have in store for us after Fallout 4?

Don't tell me Bethesda is moving into handheld games and micro transactions...

Trust me, there will be an Elder Scrolls VI. But as always it's going to be another couple of years before it's even announced.

Fallout 3 was released in late 2008.

Skyrim was released in late 2011, 3 years later.

Then Bethesda stayed quiet for 3.5 years and announced Fallout 4 this spring.
Fallout 4 will be released in late 2015, 4 years later.

So we can assume that if TES6 is their next game after Fallout 4, it won't be announced or released until 2018 or 2019.

That would be my guess. Why would a game company not continue with a series after releasing the highest grossing installment of the company's history?

"if ever" was quite an overstatement.

That's putting it mildly.

Think about this, Fallout fans had to wait seven years before we had even a whisper of the fact that it even existed. Give Fallout fans their chance to enjoy their time. TES VI's chance will come in time, and hopefully Beth will understand the meaning of the word communication by then. :lmao:

Maybe we're in the era of Fallout now. That's cool, I can take a breather from TES for a while.

They do take their time with their games, but i'd bet TES VI will be around by 2020.

Why kill the goose that lays golden eggs?

And maybe i'll start farting rainbows with a pot gold in the end of each one
Actually, i'd like that

IMO a breather is needed to help prevent burnout. After playing Fallout 3 for a couple years, and then New Vegas after that, I found myself a little burnt on it and need of the break that TES offers. Now that I've played TES V for the last 3 years, I find myself in need of a break from it...and Fallout fits that bill perfectly.

Its going to be a while , remember its been 7 years since fallout 3 came out, so it could be 2018 before we hear anything on a new elder scrolls, games like these take time. And it can be kind of a downer waiting, but its worth it. Fallout 4 isn't even out yet, plus we will probably have a year of dlc following.

What about those of us interested only in one franchise? A 7 year break is excessive imo. How many other developers do you know who make such long breaks between entries?

I have no problem waiting. I prefer BGS take their time than releasing yearly bug ridden games ala Assassin's Creed.

This would be a good argument if Bethesda games weren't bug-ridden, but, uhm...

While I understand the criticism for BGS to not release games for a franchise on a 7+ year ratio, I'm a bit confused as to why there have been so many topics lately expressing a tinge of belief that there might not ever be a TES game again or panic that there isn't one coming out for about the next year or so, even considering Fallout 4. I especially think it's unlikely, considering how many at BGS report thinking of TES as their "baby."

Either way, I'm in no rush for TES VI. As far as I'm concerned, they can take as long as they please, as long as they do their best to cut as little content as possible. I'm willing to wait however long it takes for them to make a game that is truly remarkable, even if that means the next TES game coming out in 2019 - 2021.

As a few others have said in this topic and the 2ish other topics about this lately, I think that, considering BGS's prior release schedule, it's a safe bet to say we probably won't see any word of TES VI until 2017, with 2018 - 2019 being the most likely range, and 2020 - 2021 probably being the latest. Once we get to around 2019 - 2021 without any word, that's when I'll start to worry about the future of TES.

Most developers don't make games like this. most are not even 1/2 the size, and the developer does one game after another. Bethesda switches between fallout and elder scrolls. So it takes time. If you just want and elder scrolls your going to be waiting, don't be selfless that they don't just make elder scrolls or just fallout. Its great the way it is, we got fallout 3 then Skyrim and now fallout 4 another elder scrolls will probably fallow but not till 2018 before we hear anything. might even be later than that.

Valve comes to mind. There was a six-year wait (1998-2004) between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. And who knows when Half-Life 3 will come out?

Blizzard is another. A 12-year wait (2000-2012) between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3. Another 12-year wait (1998-2010) between Starcraft and Starcraft 2.

I find it highly unlikely they'd shelf their most successful franchise, their baby, for a very long period of time. It'll probably be a while till they release the next one. Look at Skyrim, it came out in 2011 and the next sandbox RPG we get from this team is FO4 4 years later. So if they'd take another 4 years after FO4 releases to work on TES VI it wouldn't surprise me (I know it doesn't strictly work that way but you get my point).

I'd rather have them do this that do what Ubisoft does to Assassin's Creed for example.

EDIT

Not to mention the fact that they seem to be reducing the time between announcement and release (something I'm happy with). So it might be another game release 6 months after announcement.

Bethesda Game Studios might actually shelf The Elder Scrolls VI until 2021 or 2022. There was a article someone linked to where Todd Howard did say he is exploring a brand new video game franchise to develop. It was in The Elder Scrolls Series Discussion section of the forums.

Look at what you get though. These are "living, breathing" worlds. Large "living breathing" worlds. That takes time.

I'm as excited as the next guy for the next TES but I'm content that they take their time and give us the greatness they have in the past. TES is my favourite game series of all time! I'll never forget walking out of the ship in Seyda Neen. I was blown away!

Sure there are other good games out there, but nothing tops TES!

For the size of their games I would rather they take their time.

Every link I've seen regarding this so far has been purely directed towards Fallout shelter, and I've not seen a direct quote saying "we think we might start a new IP in the company" or anything remotely likely towards this idea.

I could be completely wrong, but at this point, I think it's highly unlikely that they would put a massive hold on their favorite and the majority of their fanbase's favorite IP.

It has happened before in gaming, but I know other entertainment industries where it can be worse.

I have been waiting, among millions of other fans, a long time for band to release their next album. The last time they did so, TES 4 had been on the market for about 2 months.

Well video game developers do get burned out after working on developing the same video game franchises sequels or pre-quels after 10 years or 20 years. They can't remain on it forever. Todd Howard does want to show some new creative freedom and Pete Hines said Todd Howard can do whatever the hell he wants to do.
