What if Nights Were Darker?

Atmosphere. A sharp contrast between lights and shadows makes for pretty awesome and tense exploration.

You wear nightvision glasses or use a nightvision/thermal scopes.

I liked it in the Stalker series, exploring the world with your flash light and every now and then seeing eyes glint in the darkness just out of view...

Would also add to making settlements, having safe havens with lights to help see near by would be a cool addition.

Maybe link it with the weather? Clear night you barely need pip boy light, over cast you need it heavy rain you best find some where to wait :P

And turn the game into a washed-out, no-contrast, green-tinted mess. Ugh.

Maybe have an option in the video menu to change how bright nights can be.

An actual night would be very cool, provided that all enemies didn't treat it exactly like daytime, which has been the case in the past. I installed some lighting mods for Skyrim which made the nights darker, but NPCs didn't care and nailed me at range with bows even though it was pitch black, or came flying out of the dark. Kinda defeats the point a bit when you're the only one it affects.

I don't think I've ever played a game where night time actually makes it dark. But in saying that. I can go outside in the dark and see perfectly fine in real life. Unless I'm in the woods and it's over cast and there are death claws hiding in the trees.

I did not think of moon phases and moonlight being a factor of how dark nights would be. I actually like that idea. :tops:

This. I'm currently playing FO3 with DC Moods, and it makes the nights quite dark. It's more realistic (and sometimes a pain in the ass), but I often end up with Raiders shooting me from out in the darkness. If darker nights were built into the vanilla game, at least there would be a greater chance of it being balanced properly with NPC's who shouldn't be able to see you so easily.

I'd like to see pitch black nights when the player first travels outside at night. After a few minutes, the player's night vision should begin taking effect. The overall change should still be darker nights with the moon having a brightening effect based upon its phase.

i think how dark a night is should accord with the moon's phases.

pitch dark at new moon, pretty bright when it's full.

I think the issue in F3 and NV is that the experience of playing at night is basically the same as playing during the day, except darker and with night sounds. There need to be creatures that only come out at night (maybe more dangerous ones); maybe hunters that come out at night to hunt those creatures; night patrols and shady goings-on; stat adjustments already mentioned; and maybe a darker look that requires more flashlight use. In other words, if the dev ran with this idea, playing at night could feel like you are playing in a different world when compared with playing during the day.

New Vegas they had Nightstalkers in packs come out a t night killing NCR or Ceaser troops.

Hope they add something familiar, dunno make Deathclaws more active at night or something,or more raiders slavers active at night raiding or something.

If our portable sources of light are the same as previous games (Thanks pip-boy light, I can now see 6 inches in front of me!) then no, because with my experience with darker fallout nights, you cant see ANYTHING outside your little bubble. I still need to be able to get from A to B after dark and have a chance of being able to defend myself too.

If power armor has a flashlight like seen in the demo, then the same applies.

If we get the flashlight on weapons, hats, or as an item, then I'd at least not hate it. But for me to think it's a good idea we need some way to see in the dark (like NVGs or scopes, flares, street lights, etc. plenty of ways to illuminate the night when we need to either defend ourselves or scavenge or whatever we may need to do, and all the sources of lights need to have drawbacks such as using batteries, alerting enemies, etc.) Then maybe I can get some enjoyment out of this.

? Nights are To bright?I changed my tv and the video games brightness options and it ends up way to dark and I would have to turn the brightness up because the nights are so pitch black. No need for mods to make the game darker just switch around the game and tv or pc settings. A side effect of this is more vivid colors :)

This. Vanilla F03 and especially NV were waaay too bright. At least Fellout managed to go in the opposite direction and made the nights pitch black. lol. But for me, Nevada Skies base mod was way too bright. The colorful starry skies and blueberry nights were nice to look at but unrealistic from an immersive point. So I had to add the darkest alternative to adjust the lighting in the outback areas. Just so that my Project RECON gear would work properly. Wandering Vanilla NV at midnight was as though you were doing that during the late twilight/late evening hours of the day. And that was far out in the wilderness far away from roads etc.

Your experience is because many of the "darker" mods are not done properly (i.e., they do not follow the principles of optics). Usually, such mods simply make a global change so that everywhere is darker (interior or exterior depending on the mod). In fact, there were several "darker night" mods for FO3 and most of them are very poor (as you said/experienced).

However, for interiors, "Darker Interiors" by Rednaolracs is a good interior mod and does not change inhabited interiors. It doesn't go overboard with darkness with other interiors, either, such as the Super Duper Mart and metro system. It just makes things so that you do need a light to see clearly. Without a light, it is very shadowy and easy to accidentally get too near enemies if you aren't careful.

More importantly, for exterior nighttime mods, by far the best one is "Light of Night" by Holbrook. This is not one of the more well-known, popular night mods, but it is the ONLY one that I found where the author actually follows the principles of optics and even explains the details of the approach taken in the Description (on Nexus only but not in the ReadMe, unfortunately).

Holbrook's mod used to be on Nexus as that is where I found it. However, it appears that it isn't there anymore. It's really too bad but it's worth searching for it elsewhere if you want an excellent nighttime mod.

Hopefully, BGS will take heed of both of these mods for FO4. The lighting in their games has always been a huge problem in that it is almost impossible to play many character types when unlit interiors and nighttime exteriors are almost as bright as day or well-lit artificial lighting. It's one of the major areas that has always been addressed by modders. For example, look at the Realistic Lighting for Skyrim as well as others.

Fair enough. I know in games that actually use darkness in level design, like stealth and horror games, I don't have a problem with it. And they usually give us some easy way to mitigate it, like night-vision or flashlights.

I don't know if Fallout 4 is going in this direction, but it does feature a flashlight. Would weapon mods like Glow Sights also hint toward this?

I'd also like it to be similar to games like Metal Gear Solid, where using a flashlight can blind enemies when you suddenly turn it on them.

I also want to have flashbangs.

Personally, I don't mind a night sky that lets you actually see. I'd much rather that than having to wait 8 hours every time I'm out in the wasteland and it starts getting dark.

Probably wouldn't be in the game, But I like the idea of different enemies at night, lowered sight/light and all of that..

As far as mods- how possible would it be to drop perception for the PC, NPCs and creatures, at night?
This with something that limits the ambient lighting during night, would be nice.

Would moonlight and even starlight, on clear nights be a factor? There's virtually no light pollution.

Starlight probably wouldn't have that big a role, as the stars are too far away for any of their light to have that much of an effect on illuminating the Earth, but moonlight certainly should.

Starting a fire or wiring a lamp to turn on to attract enemies and set traps would also be a neat feature that could be built from this.
