What oblivion really needs

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:51 pm

Is a movement overhaul.

-Running at full speed backwards shouldn't be possible
-Running with a bow drawn...
-Strafing at full run speed...

I have to impose limits on myself just to not go around never getting touched pumping arrows into everything, and I can easily side step almost every shot of enemy archers or targeted spell even with OOO increasing the speed of projectiles. Even in melee it's fairly easy to dodge anything using a slow swing speed weapon.

Anyone else feel like movement is too unrealistic? Not sure if there are any mods that fix this, but a google of oblivion movement mod didn't get me anything.

there are at least half a dozen mods that effect running backwards and fatigue. Scroll down a little on the mod page to the guy asking about realism mod advice, it certainly pertains to you. someone else can give you specific mods as i don't know the names

edit: here's the thread http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1092398-realism-mods/

tyhe problem here is that some people forget to keep in m ind oblivion is a GAME and a FANTASY game at that. so physics may be very different on nirn then what we know. everyones always complaining about realism and to an extent thts all well and good. I use sleep and hunger mods personally sure. i'm suere alot of people do i'm noty trying to faultyou or anyone else for choice of mods. it just seems that what people mean b y realism oft ammounts to "make things harder for the player" take any overhaul its less concerned with realism and more alo ng the lines of OMFGWTFSUPERHARDIDIEEVERYTWOSECONDS

If Oblivion's physics were clearly meant to be different than reality I'd understand, but it feels like they just did a bad job of replicating real life physics in a believable way. Movement is a large part of combat and when it looks and feelsall wrong it's a gameplay issue, not a realism or difficulty issue.

I made a fun little mod that alters movement speed to be accelerated, i.e. you start out slow and speed up. Personally, "insta-sprint" was much more of an immersion-breaker for me than any of the problems you mentioned; maybe I'm weird that way.

People can go into a sprint fairly quickly. They might pull something or run out of breath if they're out of shape but that's it.

"No Backwards Running" is an entire category of mods. ;)

-Running with a bow drawn...

Not sure anyone's addressed this one. If they have, it will be in one of the various archery mods. Note that having any weapon readied will slow you down, but I assume you mean having an arrow nocked and pulled.

-Strafing at full run speed...

Actually, you don't. Tested it one time, you're something like 30% slower when strafing. Reasonable if you think of it as running forward with your torso turned sideways, rather than crab-walking while facing forward.

No ones ever addressed the fact you can turn at a full speed sprint. This wouldn't be to difficult to fix. Make a script so mouse sensitivity is lower at a higher speed.

Stumbled on it somewhat randomly, but http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1074534-relz-duke-patricks-combat-archery-mod/ does at least touch upon this:

-Moving around will make you miss (shoot off the cross hair) a lot. Running or jumping is worst than walking. This is reduced by holding still for a few moments.

-Moving backward has RISK! This is NOT a random event. My mod detects tripping hazards! You may trip over the dead, change in elevations like stairs or large world objects that interfere with your movement such as a chairs!

EDIT: Disclaimer: I don't actually use that mod, I just happened upon it yesterday and remembered it.

If you turn sharply at full speed while running back-wards you will risk tripping using my Combat Archery mod.

The MOBS and OMOBS mods have optional combat settings which drastically slows down running backwards.
