What do people really want?

Post » Sun Apr 24, 2011 10:16 pm

From the past days after i joined this forum i came to the conclusion that majority of players just seem to want a graphical upgrade to the series and keep everything like it was either in Oblivion or Morrowind depending on their favorite..
Every topic that presents a new idea for the game is largely gritted with plain negativity and disdain showing a very conservative attitude towards innovation. Now i don't mean people have to agree to every idea that shows up but a plain negative comment without any sort of constructive criticism is just really annoying. Just please try to be respectful to new ideas and share your view of the subject.. don't just say "oh no! Never! This is Not [insert game name], this is a RPG!", if thats all you got to say then i think most OPs would rather you keep it to yourself.

Just my share of the view.. and yes i know this is a rant.

No

j/k

But seriously, most of the suggestions are beyond terrible. Everything from ridiculous "immersion" and "realism" requests to the down rite asinine.

Some suggestions are stupid. Not even innovation. For example: the thread about guns in skyrim.

I want an interesting interactive story that stars a character of my imagination. The world itself and the expansion of our understanding behind this great work of fiction is my main interest.

I believe some sites will have info up before Thursday. Like IGN. Remember, 105 members of the press saw the demo. Not just Game Trailers.

They need to worry about implementing features that were in previous games, but have been taken out before they add in 1000 new requests that people want.

Mostly just want a mix of the things Oblivion did the best and the things Morrowind did the best, and some work on the things neither of them did very well.

Be it stupid or not they are still suggestions.. and surely a quick and well constructed critic would close the subject. The subject was so absurd that the thread already has like 7 pages and many of them are just simply filled with [read examples from above].

I believe there's a bias in terms of which threads tend to grow and stay on the top page. Stupid suggestions will generate a lot of argument and thus keep getting bumped. I once posted a thread about including Morrowind-style colored lanterns and candles. Everyone who posted in the thread agreed with it, but it only got two pages of discussion and sunk down to who knows where. Perhaps if this forum had an upvote/downvote system like Reddit, popular suggestions would feature more prominently.

I personally don't think fans really know what they want. For example, everyone's like, "Man, I hope we get to ride dragons!", and I feel like it sounds cool, but it would get old after a little while, because it would pretty much eliminate travel on foot and horse from point a to point b. Everyone would just fly everywhere once they got a dragon. And I personally think it would turn out to be pretty cheesy actually.

Overall, I think the developers have a creative and artistic image in mind, with plenty of depth, and I think it's best that they stick to what their own ideas.

Fixed that for ya.

Same ("Not even innovation") goes for every "wudn't it be kewl if tehy added [feature] like [game] haz???" thread. If the feature is all that, go play a game that has it. Bethesda's got their act together and doesn't need to copy every mass-market sheep-produced game out there.

Mostly just want a mix of the things Oblivion did the best and the things Morrowind did the best, and some work on the things neither of them did very well.

Exactly.

You're new around here, ain't ya? Not really a question, if you believe "a quick and well constructed critic would close the subject."

I want rich cinematic experiences, realism (Such as guards not knowing youve killed someone half way across the map, or someone still knows your in their house, even after your out of their sight :) Animations as realistic as ever, a reason not to fast travel all the time( like random encounters, something making you want to travel the roads or forest) a feel good experience when you've done a deed such as people recognizing you.

I think they could offer a good balance even with dragon mounts. Dragons would receive a lot of attention in the game, so cities and settlements would be shooting it down with arrows, balistas and catapults. so maybe it isnt the best transport especially as a stealth character as everyone would know you have landed your massive dragon there, Lets go and kill him.

Thank you man, some people are very quick to think about how something would disappoint them, maybe because it has been ruined in the past or something. But i trust that Bethesda were thinking about most of the things said on this forum, its a new game, things could be different, you never know exactly. One thing I have learnt is that Bethesda are full of surprises. :)

The thing of it is that on the one hand, you have people who played morrowind or and earlier TES game when they were the best RPGs by simple fact that they were the ones that were trying to be huge open worlds with more than point and click gameplay, and these people wouldn't care if skyrim was a copy of morrowind or oblivion, people who say "oblivion only had a few minor flaws". Then you have the people whose first RPG was Fable or some &*%^&$^ like that, who make demands for "additions" rather than improvements, i.e. guns/riding dragons, when for example if the development team was really to take a suggestion from this forum and try to develop it it they would be fools to pick something like that over lets say, an improved stealth system, magic system, various other core concepts that could actually improve the gameplay, because...

honestly what an ELDER SCROLLS GAME needs more than improved immersion is improved gameplay/athetics, I mean come on the type of game that this is is immersing by its nature. arg I got on a rant and lost my train of thought
