What Perks to get asap that will benefit you the most later

Post » Tue Jun 28, 2011 6:35 am

  • Intense Training (2) : http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Intense_Training
  • Swift Learner (2) : http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Swift_Learner (< bonus XP ... Does it matter? I mean ... If I just kill some more I'll get it sonner or later anyhow.)
  • Educated (4) : http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Educated
  • ? : ?

I just played FONV 1 time up to lev. 15 sometime ago. Work got in the way and I lost track of what I had done, so I decided to restart. So I did, but after reading some here and there I realized I may have focused on the wrong stuff in early levels.
After reading in some, I get the impression that Intense T. & Educated are the ones to get before all else asap since this will give me alot more "points" in the end. VS. I choose some other skills and get those 2 higher up.

Am I correct in that assumption?

Definitely get Educated as soon as it's available to get the most return out of it. Intense training you can pick up later and it will still have the same effect. Swift Learner is strictly optional, because there is so much to do (and kill) in the game that you'll have no problem eventually hitting the level cap.

Well, if you plan on getting the 4 DLCs, you won't need any perks that get you more skill points. Intense training depends, you can use it to raise a SPECIAL skill if you need it at a certain level for another perk. And yes, ignore swift learner, you'll get the xp anyway.

None of those perks besides Intense Training will be worth it once the level cap reaches 50. Heck I don't know if I'll even pick up Comprehension because the amount of skill points I'm going to get is going to make the skill books useless.

I usually NEVER go for the swift learner perk. You just end up wasting as many perks as you put into it. Exp is unlimited, perks are not; so never go for Swift Learner.
Starting off I tend to always go for:

Lvl 2: Intense Training (whatever you need most) look ahead for a perk you want and find out if you need a skill up to a certain amount to unlock it.
Lvl 4: Educated
Lvl 6: Comprehension
Lvl 8: Scrounger
Lvl 10: Gunslinger
Lvl 12: Sniper or Commando
and then whatever I want to do based on how I play.
I HIGHLY SUGGEST THAT YOU DO NOT PICK HERE AND NOW IT IS A WASTED PERK!!!!! Pick things that will be useful when you are maxed out.

This is what I am aiming for.

And yes, I plan to get all the xpansions (if all is released to the PS3 that is.)

With the 50 levels, I'd only take Educated if you want a low INT character. Even then, you'd probably have more than enough to max out almost all the skills you'd want. For instance, my level 40 char with 7 (I think) INT has maxed Energy Weapons, Guns, almost Explosives and Barter, Lockpick, Speech, most of Science, high Survival and Medicine. Plus, if you play the game right, certain skills don't need to be raised very using your own skill points to get maximum benefit. For instance, with a Utility Jumpsuit (+5 to Lockpick) and Locksmith's Reader (+10, or +20 with Comprehension), plus the books (I think there are 4? which is +12 or +16 with Comprehension). You could conceivably up Lockpick to between 59-73 and still up your skill to 100 for the odd Very Hard locks you come across, and that's not counting if you take some Mentats or Coyote Tobacco for the Per bonuses. That's 27-41 extra skill points to spend right there. With Speech, you can get the Naughty Nightwear (+10 Speech) and Daniel's Hat from the DLC (+5 to Speech), coupled with a Meeting People (+10 or +20) and you can see where you might save some skill points (and that's not including books, of course.)

Educated is pretty useless since you get [censored]load of skill points in the end anyway. It would be useful for characters with INT<4 but it has a 4 INT requirement.
Swift Learner is useless because experience is everywhere.
Intense Training is semi-useless cause you can tailor SPECIAL to your liking well enough with implants.
Comprehension is useless cause skill points are everywhere. Hell I'm not even collecting the books anymore.
Scrounger is useless, ammo is everywhere. Loot it, buy it, make it, recycle it whatever.
Any VATS related perk is useless, just aim manually.
Fast Metabolism is useless cause, you guessed it too much stimpacks.

Cut it short, all the long-term perks are useless cause there's too much stuff in the game.
