What is a "playthrough"?

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 6:31 am

Hello, I was wondering what people idea's of a playthrough is. Is it going trough the main quest or doing side missions, main quest and all that stuff. I plan on running through about two secondary chars that are assassin and mage that will do a medium amount of side quests and finish the main quest fairly fast. I will use these chars when I'm bored of using my main soldier char who will be my main heavy RP char. So how do you guys do it:? Just main quest or what? Also how will you keep from being bored after beating the main quest once and starting a new char?

Playing through the game.

And the game won't get very boring or monotonous due to the Radiant Story.

General Kael, you have unrealistic expectations of Radiant Story. It is NOT a random quest generator!

And OP, I consider it a playthrough when I get tired of one character and then start another.

A play through is typically one character.

A playthrough as others have said is 1 character. When that characters story is finished for me I'll move on to another character.

For me it typically is considered finishing the main quest. However my style of play this is usually one of the last things I do. I enjoy experiencing exploring, side quests and all the other little things before I bring the main quest to a close.

What he meant was that there is content after you "finish the game", or after you complete a faction quest line.

Whichever the case, Im gonna keep coming back to the forums in the coming months and LAUGH at all the people that are gonna be mad because its not what they expected. Would serve them right for taking Pete tweets out of context.

Yep. However long I play a single character, and whatever parts of the game I choose to do on that character, are a "playthrough" for me. (Well, except for ones that are only a few hours, or that I stop for various technical/etc reasons. Like restarting with a different build, or realizing that a set of mods I installed isn't working.)

"Playthroughs" of Fallout 3, for me, have included characters who did the MQ, characters who didn't, ones who did as many sidequests as possible, others who just wandered around..... anything from 25 hours to 75 hours.

IMO, for a non-linear, open world RPG like Skyrim, it would be simply the period of time from character creation up until you decide it is time to retire the character.

In the case of Oblivion, I've played about three different "playthroughs" over a period of years but I have never completed the main quest or the questlines for KoTN, Shivering Isle, Mages' Guild, Thieves' Guild or Fighter's Guild. Rather, at a certain point it felt like it was time to retire the character and start over.

I suppose in my case, if the PC ever becomes so wealthy in an RPG that he/she can easily afford anything in the game, there is no more point to accumulating wealth and it feels like the game is over at that point. I usually use mods to enhance the economy and make it a lot more challenging to become wealthy.

As far as playthoughs go. It depends on te character I'm playing. My nord will prob just do the main mission, a little exploring. Battlemage will do just about anything. Thief will, well thief and do stuff I didn't do before.

What ever you plan on doing from the start of the character, things such as doing the MQ, Guilds, side-quests, role-playing, or even just doing whatever appeals to you on the spot. Just anything really that you plan on "playing through" with your character.

And as for your question on what to do after you beat the MQ, well in TES games you have extra quest-lines within guilds/factions, a ton of side-quests, a bunch of role-playing opportunities, mods (if you are a pc user, highly recommended :)), etc. You'll find in a game world like this, you will have plenty to do with multiple characters without getting bored.

I usually consider a playthrough to be at least a complete run from begin to end of the story/main quest.

Playing 1 character until I'm really, really done with him/her and start a new character (or stop playing for a while first).

You know what might be cool? If, when you were finished with a character, you could retire it. Then in your next game, you could run into your old retired character as an elderly person, who might have a special quest to offer.

To me a "Playthrough" is a file that you have done enough with to be ready to start another file. You can always go back to those files, but generally I've "played through" when I'm done playing with that character.

Usually playing the whole game. Though with TES some people might mean everything, MQ+faction quests, or just the MQ.

A Playthough is when you get to a point in the game where you have joined every fraction possible and every guild possible and can find no other activity that is to your liking or intrest....
That is what I call a play though...
