What rating should Bethesda aim for?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:10 pm

I am curious as to what rating TES V should aim for? Arena got T, Daggerfall got an M, Morrowind got a T, and Oblivion (While they aimed for T until the last minute when the ESRB made a topless discovery) got an M. The Elder Scrolls has varied in its ratings a lot. I am wondering what rating you guys think TES V should get?

I want an M. A gaming world feels much more realistic when there are the seedier parts of town, the gore in corpses, the drunks in bars... and so-on.

I'm curious as to what a "baby friendly" TES game would be like.

I agree with you though, M would be best.

Baby friendly! WEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Realistically speaking, mature, like the quote Qawsed Asap posted. Things are believable, not things are that for the sake of it, being very shallow, or farting rainbows and sunshine.

Mature, to a point where it follow this quote:
Other. The other being "Mature =/= six and blood"

I'd rather have "mature" mean "not sugar-coating the hardships of life" (poverty, back-stabbing, cheating, greed, filth, robbery, torture, disease, trauma, political corruption). I'd rather "mature" meant deep and involved quests with unique NPCs whose behavior it believable. Sure, you can have quests about relationships, fine. But gratuitous six and violence - there is nothing deep there, there is nothing "mature" at all - rather, it is used to produce juvenile knee-jerk reactions out of the audience (hence the excessive use of bare flesh in advertising).

I don't want Bethesda to pick a rating and aim for that. I want them to make the game that they want to make, and let the ESRB pick the rating for them.

Having said that, I hope TESV will have more content directed to the Mature audience than Oblivion.

That's cause Oblivion was originally rated Teen. :whisper:

I vote for a Mature rating as well, it gives the developers more freedom to make a believable world.

I voted M. I don't want nudity or six, but I want to be able to cut peoples limbs off, see blood spray, and be able to kill anyone and anything I want. I want ultimate freedom in regards to combat.

Mature, no shying away from actually mature topics. Oblivion was WAY to clean, sure you got headless skinned corpses but that's not mature.

Actually have characters swear instead of trying to babble down needlessly long taunts, make dark places actually feel dark and such.

M - though they really shouldn't "aim for it", but focus on making an immersive game. I really hate the idea of game developers developing games around an arbitrary rating system that I flat-out ignore anyway.

M for Mature. Not M for gratuitous amounts of gore and boobs.

I would like a T, but given the increasing graphics in games, it'll likely be M for the graphic depiction of violence and rotting corpses.

Exactly, because mature means in fact LESS boobs everywhere and blood and gore only when neccessary, like to underline the wickedness of some horrible daedra you put violated corpses around it's lair. Also it would be nice to see realistic medival towns, you know, with filth running down the gutter and such...

Still, I wonder where was that topless sighting in Oblivion, because I don't remember anything like it...and I'm sure I would:P

I think Tes V should have cussing, like Hell and Damn, yes, but other things, veto, they didnt use that sort of language. I would love to see an ancient castle with actually SCARY stuff, like your walking, all is quiet...quiet...AHHHHHHH! screams a ghost. or your in town...all is well, you've got a high fame and then a DB assassin jumps off a building screaming "DIE FOR THE NIGHT MOTHER!!!" Short Skirt topic...i've read this one alot... in the midevial ages, shirt skirts WERE NOT worn, if your dress didn't reach past your ankles, you were a social pariah.

Mature.

And when it's mature, I dont want to be playing a game a ten year old could finish without even knowing what he's doing.

No hand holding. You dont hand hold advlts through life.

No catering for those... less intelligent persons. Most mature people can use a map, read and understand directions, and decide for themselves how to do things.

Choices. Facing hard choices is what mature people do irl, while kids dont have to worry about a thing. Living with the consequences as well.

While TES4 was rated Mature, it was far, far from a mature game.

I disagree with the swearing. I can't see people using the F word in this fantasy universe. I can see them saying hell and damn, things like that perhaps. Actually, I can't see them swearing at all lol! The lore friendly swear words they have like nwah work fine.

@ Absinthe82: Thats not what the rating system is for. Mature means it has gore, violence, or swearing etc.

M-rating, it just gives more freedom to explore the grey and dark side of the world.

I voted T, I think that nudity, blood and dismemberment isn't necessary to make an interesting world. I would rather have them focus on making a world with political intrigue and choices and consequences. In my opinion gore and six can work against its intentions and make the game less serious and immersive.

I think mature because that basically includes all the realism you need...I'd like to see realistic medieval style battles. however AO pretty much means there [censored] in it...if anyone is so desperate that they need that.....I feel bad for them

I disagree with u.
Daggerfall was full of gore and six, and it was the most immersive TES ever, with the best political intrigue and plot.
Of course i wuold like more gore, but i don't won't to transform TES into a Tarantino's movie. Gore and six must be used, but wisely.

I don't really care. I said M, but what I mean is they shouldn't think of ratings while making the game. Don't let the rating determine the game, let the game determine the rating. Just put in everything they need or want to put in to make the best game possible, come hell or highway.
