What's really "found" anymore?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 5:47 am

I've been thinking...I use sources like Wikia.com and YouTube to find what there is to find in video games so seemingly often now, there's so few things that I've just discovered all on my own. I've discovered only a handful of unique weapons on my own in the game, and not to mention easter eggs.
But what I was really wondering, does anyone work the same way like that? Does anyone rely on media to thrive in games like Fallout?

I don't. I like to find things on my own. Adds to replayability. Its also why I rarely go into the spoilers section of the forums.

I've almost never looked online to find anything, except the Veteran Ranger Armor without killing the NCR finding that was really bugging me for a while. I have a friend who goes online all the time to find stuff, but it doesn't ruin the game for him. To each his own.

I don't like to do it on the first playthrough of a game, but occasionally I do run into a bug where I have to go online to see if it can be fixed. It helps that I'm playing on the PC so there is no real way for me to go online and still keep playing my game.

I'll go back years later with a hint book, or after an online search... but rarely right from the start. I've Had New Vegas since the release day, and I have yet to examine hardly anything with the GECK. My modding takes place around the Doc's house in Greenspring.

Same. I discover most things in the game under my own power on the first playthrough, but by the time I get going a second time, I want more information and understanging about how everything works, what works better, and why... for all the things I haven't managed to figure out already on my own.

After I go through obe or two full playthroughs I start using the Vault to make sure I get the ending I want.

So the answer is I do it blind a couple of times then use the Vault.

I look up things every once in a while.
Mostly I use the wikia for DLC's to make sure I get every unique item.

I use things like wikia to help make my characters better. For example, getting the laser fist of doom or a cool armor for a certain type of character.

I only look things up when I'm completely stuck. Doesn't really happen nowadays with all the kwest markers. For me, these open world games are all about personal moments of discovery, and knowing what's around every corner would kill the experience for me.

I use online sources only on the third playthrough, and only if I'm after something specific.

Guilty as charged. For the first few months I used the prima guide. Now I use the wiki for some background checks on some characters and when I have a bug.

In the originals I would go to online sources if I really got stuck on a quest or if I wasn't sure whether something was a glitch or not.

In Fallout 3 (which was the first Fallout game I played) I started out without using any wiki help, but after failing miserably at just about everything I decided to turn to the wiki.

In New Vegas I used the guide/wiki after a couple of playthroughs to see what I missed.

I mostly turn to it, for answering question here, instead of actually using them in game! :P

Since I try to avoid the vault wiki and the spoilers sections for openworlded games like this, I tend to always find things i had either never seen before or forgot about entirely. Like-

Spoiler
The Nuka Cola Quantum in Lonesome Road, the aliens from Wild Wasteland for NV, beautiful vistas and such in Skyrim, and this entire area of the DC ruins near the national guard armory in F3

I only go on Fallout Wiki if I'm absolutely stumped. In most cases, I will try my best to do things on my own, without help .

i use fallout wiki and here a lot because of the bugs that come with the game. in some games i have played, i spent hours getting items only to find out because of a bug those items were useless. if all games played according to the hype, meaning no bugs, i would use clues less often.

take for example that sidekicks can be poison and there is little that can be done about it. if it take me hours of playing on hardcoe mode to find that out, i would really be ticked off.

Not really. I only use Fallout wikia to find the tesla-beaton and the all-american. Everything else I've found on my own.

I didn't even know Raul had an unmarked quest until I checked the Vault.

There's actually very little now that I have to check.
