What should items that were used for nothing in the last gam

Post » Tue May 11, 2010 3:11 pm

In Oblivion there were items like thread that weren't ever used unless on a special mission. In the new game I think we should have more of like a receipe book to make useful items. Or we could just use thread to make blankets... or capes.

Um, sure. But yea your right though a lot of useless items in Oblivion, the point of them were though to create a more realistic environment, for example there were many boxes filled with random items in the Imperial City in Oblivion, but that was fine with me because you cant expect every box to be filled with weapons and armor, it added realism, and they didnt want empty boxes everywhere, thats all.

So if it is the real world you should be able to use it all right? And what about a hardcoe mode like on New Vegas, that be pretty cool, yea?

Appreciate that they were there. They're not as important in TES and they are in Fallout, though. Go delete all of those 'useless' items and see how crappy and empty the gameworld would feel. They aren't useless, they add atmosphere.

Bethesda is adding a crafting system to Skyrim for armor and stuff, so who knows, maybe you can make crap like clothes out of cloth, thread, etc.

It would make it even more immersive if you could use those items -- tongs for forging, rakes for working the land, etc.

also remember, in skyrim you will be able to do tasks like cutting logs, doing other chores, etc. I'm sure these items will have their uses!

That is a good question. The items add realistic atmosphere and all that but they seem to have many real world uses too.
I mean the calipers and tongs could be used for blacksmithing and the cloth and jewels can be used for making clothing. Who knows, maybe even hunting for furs can bring income in jobs and the like. Maybe in jobs you make or collect these items and sell them and later on you might see your creation appear in a household.

I would like the clutter items to have a function, but I think it might be too hard to implement uses for every single one. Also, once you have an item for crafting, such as calipers, then every other set of calipers in the game is not kind of useless again.

With the addition of crafting abilities, some formerly useless items should have more functionality. For example, whereas in past games, ore might be only useful for selling, if you can find it at all, in Skyrim, you'll be able to use it for smithing. But I'm sure we'll still see our share of useless items in the game, like cups and plates, because there isn't really any meaningful way they can make those useful to the player, but I'm fine with that, actually. One thing I like about the Elder Scrolls is that unlike many games, a lot of things that are useless to the player still get to be items anyway, not everything needs to have a use for the player to be an item, I'm not against trying to make clutter items useful if it adds something meaningful to the game. Crafting is a good way to do this, for example, as crafting was already something I wanted to see because I felt that being able to craft my own items would add some nice role-playing options. That it's also a way to use certain items that wouldn't have other uses is an added bonus. But if making them useful doesn't add anything to the game and just comes off as kind of pointless, then I see no reason to bother, in any case, cups and plates and forks should still be items, not just statics, whether you can use them or not.

Be cool to make your own scrolls out of blank parchment; use calipers, tongs and such for smithing; shears, cloth, etc for tailoring; and able to use rakes, shovels, pickaxes, etc as weapons.

Use brooms as a flying means of transportation for eccentric mages? :P
