What Should I Name My Essay?

Post » Sat Aug 28, 2010 9:26 pm

I'm writing a short essay about leadership for my NHS application. I'm not sure if it's acceptable to have a witty title or have it simply be "Leadership Essay." Any advice forums?

To me, it depends on the context/tone/style of the essay.

You can go with something really simple like just "Leadership", "On Leadership", "What is Leadership?"...

Does your essay actually have a question? I tend to either just use the question as a title or use a generic name like "Leadership essay", I'm not a fan of 'witty' titles.

I definitely wouldn't go with "Leadership essay". If you are uncertain about a witty comment, you can always use the writer's fallback when in a pinch: alliteration

I have to write about what leadership is and how I show leadership.

They are making you write an essay to get into NHS?

I didn't have to do that. Anyway, I don't think it has to be witty or anything.

Sadly, yes. :(

There is a packet full of requirements. (essays, community service, recommendations, etc.)

Anyway, for a title, how about:

"Deconstructing leadership techniques in individuals under pedagogical administration"

"The Death of the Albatross"

It's so ambiguous and layered with possible interpretation of the symbolism, that it works for nearly any essay subject. I've already used it three times this year alone.

Witty and announces the topic.

Don't name your essay Leadership Essay... Please don't if you want whoever reading it to take it seriously. I've written enough college essays to know that naming something "subject essay" is probably going to drop you a letter grade or 2. I had a very VERY tough English teacher in college and I could just see her now cringing her teeth to the idea of somebody naming their essay essay. Its better to go with something witty. The title is the first thing somebody reads you want to grab the audiences attention. When somebody thinks of the word essay they think of 2 things, a thugged out mexican or something boring. You want to grab the audience's attention with your title. Now go with something along the lines of "Leadership and why its important" or "Leadership in the modern age" "The role of a leader" "Why the world needs leaders". When somebody reads your title of your essay you want them to think "hmmm well that sounds interesting I want to read more"
