What should return?

Post » Thu Mar 25, 2010 7:48 pm

Hello.
There are a heap of topics out there that say what should be added or removed in Skyrim. But not many/none ask what should they keep from Oblivion or return from Morrowind, Daggerfall, etc.
So just post here saying what you would like, from what game and why.

I would like to see the Morrowind Dark Elf voice to return, it just sounded so much better.

The one thing I LOVED in Oblivion was the skill system of gaining experience. You actually gain exp by using the items related to the skill. Unlike in Fallout 3 where you allocate skill pts when you level up. It makes much more sense the way TES:IV does it. I really hope they keep that system.

This is also how it was done in Morrowind.

I like that you become better by using your skills, but the multiplier system needs to be changed.
In Morrowind and Oblivion the leveling punished you for using major skills, and rewarded you for using minors. This was especially a problem in Oblivion because of the level scaling.

Things I want to return:
  • Climbing
  • Enchanting and spellmaking like it was in Morrowind
  • All the spell effects from Morrowind
  • More armors and weapons
  • More pieces in each armor/clothing set
  • Clothes under/over the armor
  • Morrowind's travel system
  • Different attacks depending in your movement
  • Politics between factions
  • The abscence of the quest marker
  • Unisix clothes (no pants turning into skirts etc.)
  • The Morrowind skills that was taken away

Thats the system they've had in every TES game. I'd be shocked if they varied from that form.

I'd like them to bring back short blade, long blade, unarmored, enchant, medium armor, and axe skills from morrowind. they'd definitely need to tweek enchant though.

EDIT: I'd also like do see them remove/rework the level scaling from oblivion. Just because I'm level 30 shouldn't mean that every joe shmoe i come across should have glass/daedric armor/weapons.

a map the size of daggerfall

/jokes- that think is twice the size of britain. but i want the map so big that fast travel is a needed feature rather than covering up the weakness of the oblivion world. 4x the size of cyrodil in oblivion i hope.

i want
armour like morrowind
all of the morrowind skills (although i agree with blunt and axe being merged, they are handled the same in real life
diverse creatures like in morrowind, when they made sense and were original- skyrim needs some crazy giant mountain goats or buffaloos, or seals with arms rather than fins
decent factions like in morrowind, but i still think new vegas had the best faction system
more varied weapons

2. Multiple endings like Daggerfall
-No Warp in the West though.

3. Daggerfall guard system.

A certain level of procedurally generated content, to compliment the actual, hand made content of course. A never ending fountain of random quests to keep you busy in a pinch, and epic, sprawling dungeons would make me a happy man.

Fitting (random) loot in dungeons. In Morrowind Dwemer ruins actually had Dwemer artifacts and relics. In Oblivion Ayleid ruins had Welkynd stones but also a ton of Leather/Iron Armor, Gold Septims and other modern day random stuff in ancient Ayleid Reliquaries. The latter was rather immersion breaking for me.

So bring back the different loot tables and handplaced items that actually has a place in what you'd expect to find in an ancient ruin :)

If they developed a system of quests that were randomly generated and you could do over and over forever I would probably die from lack of food after playing them non-stop for several weeks. That would be fantastic! Even if its just like, "Kill this guy." and it randomly places a small group of people for you to hunt down in the wilderness, that would be great!

I'd like to see a return of PC interface for the PC version with normal font size so as you could see more inventory and dialogue without scrolling.

I would also like to see:

-Mororwind's "Remove Corpse"
-Depth of Characters and Factions from Morrowind
-Alien-style landscape and feel of Morrowind (Oblivion felt too much like normal History)
-Morrowind's Danger Areas (can't climb Red Mountain at lvl 1 and survive)
-I actually liked that the same voice was used for everyone of a certain race like in Oblivion (just the elves ruined it)
-Werewolves from Morrowind
-The zoom into face from Oblivion was good, we looked at the people we were talking to. Just zoomed in too far.
-Throwing Knifes, Crossbows and Spears from Morrowind.
-Dwemer Ruins from Morrowind.
-Tattoos and Beards from Morrowind

I will probably find more later.

Vertical axis exploration in the form of climbing or levitating. This is a really cool concept that would add a lot of depth to the navigation of dungeons. Additionally, the mountainous terrain in Skyrim would go well with it.

I would also like to see the more pieces to armors, morrowind allowed pauldrons as well as seperate gauntlets, mixing things around didn't entirely make a good fashion statement but it allowed you to make the best of what you had and building sets harder.

I would like to see fast travel, active blocking and the lockpick game return from oblivion, though maybe make the lock picking a little harder or have skill level influence how it works a little more.

I liked the conflicting factions from morrowind but didn't like that half the quest in the game seem to be paying someone to either give you information, give you an item or agree with you even if it was already in their best interest to do so. Politics are alright but the player shouldn't spend half the game bribing everyone.

As others have said, would like to see the return of some more weapon types as well as some lost spells.

Also as others have said reworking level scaling. I don't think its necessarily a bad thing, a lot of unscaled rpgs take you a long a linear path so that you they you get stronger as you face stronger enemies, going back you can see your growth and it's fun. An open world rpg it gets tough because you don't want to force the player into a bubble early game where the struggle to find ways to ever get strong enough to leave the early areas and are constantly hitting walls and can't find a path to follow. However complete scaling makes gaining strength seem pointless, I think many of oblivion mods find the good middle ground. Light scaling for the general world, things are tough early, maybe even really hard but you can manage and your not going to be meeting any endgame level enemies just by accident but occassionally meet ones a little beyond your level. Then have many significant locations completely unscaled, like special ruins or castles or dungeons, whatever where you know before hand what kind of strong beings may live there and you avoid it most of the game till you are fully prepared.

Aside returning things though, I really hope they look at expanding how spells work, provide more ways of using attack spells especially wether it be flame waves, a cold aura, lightning bolts that strike around the player whatever it needs more than just target, touch or self with variable length, damage and area. I also hope they look into providing more unique items, there have been unique items in previous games but would be great to see more of it, really special enchantments with unique visual model rewarded for meeting outstanding goals like defeating really strong enemies or finding that last chest in a tough dungeon.

I agree with most of what has been said here. But for me, personally, important points that should-- no, simply must return are somewhat provincial in nature and focus mostly upon play-style and character customization.

Quote:
* More armor sets and weapons
* More pieces in each armor/clothing set
* Clothes under/over the armor
* Unisix clothes (no pants turning into skirts etc.)
Endquote.

That's the nutshell version, true, and I thank user Ollix for posting those bullet-points. But I will go into detail for my own purposes.
* More armor sets and weapons - a variety of armor and clothing sets that rival, if not exceed, that of Morrowind in number. It would also be good to see some more..."eccentric" clothing items, such as moccasins (like ES4's stitched leather shoes) and the like, helmets and footwear that the "older" Vvardenfell subspecies of beast races can wear, etc. Bring back our longspears, fighting staves, and throwing blades, too. We liked those.
* More pieces in each set/outfit - Yes! Don't short-change us with the one-piece outfits of the Fallout 3 entries, as the lack of customization was gravely disappointing. Bring back the old unevenness of outfit customization - left pauldron/spaulder, right pauldron/spaulder; left boot/shoe, right boot/shoe; left glove/gauntlet, right glove/gauntlet. A return of simple, non-armor-based gloves would be a boon also, as would the allowance of bracers and wristlets to be worn simultaneously with handgear.
* Clothes under/over the armor - Heh, this one practically explains itself. "No need to leave your lucky jeans behind, just put your cuisses on over them." "A skirt over one's legplates lends a very knightly bent to one's attire. Paladins and clerics rejoice!" "Leave foes befuddled as their knives fail to kill you, unable to pierce the daedric cuirass hidden under your necromancer's robes."
* Unisix clothes - Agreed. In Morrowind, anyone could wear anything. But in Oblivion, a good pair of pants often turned into a frumpy skirt or dress, thus disarming the appearance of many female characters. Skirts are fine and well, but make them a separate clothing item than trousers and pants, but still able to be worn simultaneously, as they were in Morrowind.

Here's a few others:
* Climbing - Dunno how that would work, but anything that increases the immersion level by such a degree, I'm all for.
* The Morrowind skills that were taken away - Yes, as many have stated, the return of Axe, Unarmored, Spear, and others would be a much-appreciated joy. Oblivion's classification of axes into the Blunt skill didn't make a great deal of sense to many of us; axes are widely different than a hammer, after all. So it'd be good seeing them put back into Axe skill. Another welcome return would be that of the Unarmored skill, for those of us who don't actually wear armor, favoring instead a preferred selection of clothes. It would also solve some minor encumbrance issues involving the carriage of worn armor. Many thieves and mages will thank you; loads will be lightened, and defenses will still be excellent without the need for bulky plate and chain.

Some have expressed a desire for Khajiit and Argonians to get their "old legs" back, having paws instead of normal feet. I agree, to a point, and I suggest a compromise. As the Cyrodiil Khajiit and Argonians and their Vvardenfell counterparts were different subspecies of the same base races, I propose the addition of a selector allowing the player to choose either feet or paws at their discretion. A little variety in eyes/eye color and fur or scale patterns would be good, as well.
Also, some have expressed comments on the sameness of voice-overs for every character of a certain race/six in Oblivion. How Khajiit and Argonians all sounded alike; or Orcs and Nords; or every single Elf or Mer currently living. Some vocal variety within each race and six group would be a wonder. No need for every Khajiit gal you meet to sound like she has strep throat.

Oh. And we want Hircine's Hounds to pop in for some wolfie fun. >:3 Do love werewolves. Maybe introduce a lupine beast race borne from them? Hmm. It bears thought.

If I think if anything else, I'll add it via edit.

Climbing was very fun in Daggerfall, though if they would bring that back hopefully they won't have roofs you can fall through like Oblivion's White Gold Tower among other things. Hopefully the new engine will support climbing. Rising in Social Status would be nice too. A Hairstylist fit for TES not like Fallout more 1300's style or something. Bummed me you were stuck with the same hair the whole game. If your Strengh grows your Bulkyness will grow as well among other features, Athletics increasing will make you more toned. Be able to make your own weapons, would be nice, like a weapons creation skill the better it gets the better the outcome of the weapon will be. If mount's are in game (Sure they will be) be able to have an inventory for the mount. Be nice if you can choose between bulky, slender, and average bodies which will affect your skill growth among how it starts out. Banks as other people said. Being able to run a business and selecting a person to manage it for you. You can put items in your shop you get from adventuring and get money from it. Also move around your house's furniture and customize it would be nice. Not sure if everyone will like this but actually getting married and having children, the further you get the more the people will weave around you. And random quests, like other people have said as well, like Daggerfall. These things would be nice Good luck Bethesda though you won't need it you are masters of the gaming world as far as I'm concerned.

All the missing skills from Morrowind. Also speechcraft useful as it was in MW. I don't mind fast travelling but some kind of transportsystem would be nice. Varied dungeons like in MW. More static loot and enemies. Also the game should start from the edge of the map like in MW. That way the sense of adventure becomes greater. New Vegas faction system would be cool in Skyrim too. More guilds like in MW. Also the character could have name (not very ES-like but still) like in Mass Effect and playercharacter could have spoken lines.

Combatsystem in Oblivion was good already, but it could be tweaked better (for example different bodyparts could be damaged like headshots with a bow etc., more difference between axes, swords and spears). Spellcasting was already good in Oblivion, that could be left pretty much as it was.

the atmosphere morrowind had, with house rivalries and stuff. It also seems like the newer the elderscrolls game is the better its graphics but the smaller amount of quests and a smaller land mass
"Mind-boggling gameplay areas to explore - pixelated addiction at its finest. Daggerfall is the second chapter in the Elder Scrolls series. You can travel around a land mass twice the size of Great Britain, visiting dungeons, tombs, castles and even alternate dimensions. The player has a chance to speak to over 750,000 non-player character filling up over 200 hours of gameplay. "Just to walk from one end of the world to the other will take over 2 full weeks in real-time (we actually tested this!)."~planet elderscrolls on daggerfall.
But you can complete oblivion relatively quickly then you just get bored. at least with morrowind you could go around freeing slaves (or capturing them if you have fliggertys slave mod). I don't care about how good it looks as long as i can play it until the next elderscrolls game comes out. so pretty much bring back a lot of stuff from morrowind. I loved morrowind, Oblivion not so much
Spears from morrowind but add a few weaker one hand versions.

A bit of Morrowind's exotism, PLEASEE. Skyrim can be very exotic, too. From the majestuous Nordic cities like Solitude, to small villages where (according to "Children of the Sky") the Pure Nords live in their most traditional ways, and can teleport themselves with a shout, and messages from everywhere arrives with the wind.
