What should be Skyrim's first mods?

Post » Fri May 20, 2011 2:28 am

Now that the Playstation mag has provided a "sneak peak" as to what Skyrim will contain, what does the community feel will be the type of mods/helpful items that should be first authored after the release of Skyrim that will probably have the most appeal to the user community? This thread may help some aspiring/PES-skilled modders determine where to place their initial modding efforts to encourage more enjoyment in Skyrim gameplay.

Other - Fixing any bugs that Bethesda doesn't fix, changing interface perhaps, adding more options, etc. Things that optimize vanilla Skyrim.

I have to go with other and I'll say fix whatever Skyrim missed, if that's even possible.

I wonder how many people will mod Spears in on day 1

The first mob will be a flaming longsword of magical asskicking found right by your feet as you start the game, or alternatively right inside your inventory.

Since you framed the question as 'should' rather than 'will' I'll answer from that perspective....

It should be gameplay tweaks and fixes that become clear as soon as people start playing the game - probably something around levelling, magic or combat stats.

But we all know that what will **actually** happen is a slew of uber-weapons that kill everything with one hit. Plus I suppose somebosy will waste their modding talents making a nvde mod within the first week...

Knowing modding community the nudity mod will be one of the first serious projects.

Knowing Bethesda probably some mini expansion/quest or 5 house DLC in a row.

A version of TES4Edit for Skyrim early on would be great, get everybody in the habit of cleaning their mods before releasing.

And will we be able to Optimize Skyrim meshes with Pyffi?

And of course Wryebash for Skyrim.

Gameplay tweaks, bug fixes and modder resources are usually the first mods to surface.

I don't think we can speculate on what should be modded when we haven't even seen the game being played yet.

Based on previous history with Oblivion and Fallout 3, the first mods will be "remove the quest markers" and "remove the points of interest" mods. Oh, and "remove fast travel".

The next fastest mods will be overpowered weapons and armors sitting right outside the starter dungeon.

And right after that, major fan bugfixes.

The time it takes to make a nvde mod will depend on the default bodies and textures supplied in the game - making a brand new body takes months (especially with the new engine and animations), whereas removing the underwear from the default body is a bit easier. But still might take designing new skin textures/etc.

UI mod.

I'm not very optimistic about this game's UI on the PC, though I hope I will be pleasantly surprised.

I'd say companions, but realistically it'll take a while for one with some depth, so I'll say some hair/eye mods.

I voted Armor/Clothing/Weapons. If the game is good, at first people will only want "more" of the same, additions and not fixes. Then after a few months new quest mods could start being released :)
If the game has issues though there'll probably be fixes among the first released mods.
