What skills will your character have?

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 1:02 am

Duelist/Thief

These 5 as a primary
One-Handed
Block
Sneak
Lockpicking
Marksman

With these 4 as lesser used skills
Alchemy
Light Armour
Speechcraft
Illusion

Yes, I know the OP said 7, but that's not how the new system works so I posted what I am really going to do.

By the looks of the pole the 6 most popular are

  • One-Handed
  • Light Armour
  • Marksman
  • Smithing
  • Sneaking
  • Block

And these are probably gonna be my main focuses.

Fortunately, there are no longer major or minor skills! In the past, I wouldn't choose everything I wanted as a major, because the attribute system forced me to focus on things that gave me 2-3 +5's per level. Now, we will no longer pick skills, we will just play. :tes:
I feel as though I am one of the few that is actually excited for these changes.

Anyways, for my Breton/Altmer, I chose Enchanting, Smithing, Heavy Armour, Alchemy, Sneak, and Marksman. Those are a given. The seventh is subject to change, but I chose conjuration because it's awesome. The least useful spell in the book, but cool nevertheless. EDIT- Restoration, duh. It's what I use the most.

Me too. Unfortunately, it was also the most frustrating. It took something like 10x as many uses to increase Restoration than it did to increase Alteration/Conjuration.

PS = I also really like the removal of classes. Classes are so contrary to what the skill-based RPG TES has been. It's great that it's gone! More freedom is a good thing.

Sneaky argorian who uses summons and illusion magic. Everyone murders each other due to illusion magic, then I summon daggers to backstab them using my 1h skill after poisoning them. Monster summons will be used with invisibility to hide if detected.

I like up-close-and-personal fighters with light armor. So, probably something like:
One Hand
Two Hand
Light Armor
Smithing
Block
Sneak
Marksman (as a backup - not so sure on this one)

Heavy armor was an obvious choice for me because thats what my Nord will be wearing most of the time. Im looking forward to seing the heavy armors that Skyrim will have.

Curious thing about this question....

First - if the game's worth it, I'll undoubtedly play many characters, all different. I have no idea what I'll play first.
Second - whatever I do play will just end up using whatever skills make the most sense for the character. I probably won't have more than a rough idea in advance.
And third - that's the way I've always played TES games - even with the "restrictive" class system and "restrictive" attributes of past games.

This is a difficult one. I have a few different ideas for characters in my head, I'm just not sure what one I'll play first. I usually go for stealth characters first in TES games. This time round I'm thinking about roling a Mage first. I'm just not sure what race I'll play for a Mage though, probably breton or dunmer.

Destruction
Alteration
Restoration
Enchanting
Conjuration
Speechcraft/Mercantile
Alchemy/Illusion

Of course it's all subject to change.

Enchanting, Restoration, One handed, Block, Heavy Armor, Speechcraft
I might choose Smithing instead of Heavy Armor or Block.Even if there are no more classes in Skyrim, these are the skills I wanna use with my first character.

Still holding a grudge against Bethesda for removing Athletics and Acrobatics... :swear: It seems like nobody else really cares about that, but for me, having this super fast guy after reaching level 20 was really cool, I loved being able to jump between the houses on Bravil with my super Acrobatics. I'm afraid that Bethesda has decided that, the way to increase your speed is to put more points into fatigue so you can sprint longer. And the solution isn't to give everyone super speed and jump, but I'd really like my thief to feel separate from my other characters. But back on topic, what I would like is:

Archery, One Handed, Light Armor, Alchemy, Lockpicking, Smithing, Athletics/Acrobatics Combined(Thats what I thought was going to be in the game)

^ Perhaps acrobatic/athletic skill and speed will be more heavily emphasized in your selection of Race vs the skills you use alot. It makes sense that certain races have biological advantages over others in certain areas. Hopefully this will be communicated in a more refined way than "Orcs have +10 starting strength"

I'm very confident bethesda will handle the removal of those skills appropriately. I agree with their decision to take them out, and to do away with the major skills system. I'm very excited to see what is in store.

That being said, In oblivion I played every combination of race and skills I could think of. I had multiple characters of every race and specialty. Needless to say I will be having a very hard time choosing my starting point.. though I have always valued a sneaky marksman type character with some practical magic thrown in for good measure. The great part about the new system is that I dont have to choose just seven skills and take them to 100 if I want to gain a high level. There is more incentive to use what you want out of certain skills and your characters' skillset will be more "Honestly" comprised by the things that you use the most.

as far as the new skills go, I would have to say that smithing and enchanting are both very interesting.

First post also... hello everyone.

I just said 2h, block, and heavy armor. Basically I want to smash things hard and be good in combat. I'm still wondering why the heck I have to go through this step of picking skills. I should be able to just smash stuff and have the game figure out how to improve my character. The only interface I want to see on my screen is my hammer interfacing with nord faces.
