What if Skyrim Bombs?

Post » Mon Jun 28, 2010 3:42 am

it wont

And with that it seems the verdict is in. I only hope Skyrim won't become the new "Oblivion" where everyone one loves it then bashes it to death.

If this game svcks, then it is time to move on. It wont svck though, not if todd is on the case. I have faith in my dear Bethesda and Todd H.

After my experience of being swept up in the hype of Oblivion and coming out of it extremely disappointed, I've now come to believe that you should have low expectations of things which you anticipate.

Good thing I was way over hyped for Oblivion and came away completely satisfied. To each their own.

The only way I see this game flopping is if it doesn't make a profit, which is unlikely.

What I'm more concerned with is Beth not keeping their long term, dedicated fan-base happy. Sure, they could change things (they have already) to appease people who come from a background of gaming from totally different genre's, but it's their long term, dedicated, here for the long haul, fan base, that makes them what they are. Everyone else will move on from TES as soon as the next "big thing" is on the horizon. Given, Beth probably doesn't care so long as they get payed.

And with as much focus on the action and melee combat that's been focused on, as well as the sprinting (which albeit could work, and probably will work, fine, it's something I'm unsure of), it seems to be like it will be along the lines of a single-player campaign from: Call of Duty: Medieval Warfare (a bit of an over exaggeration, all I mean is I don't want them to over-focus on action to appease players with shorter attention spans).

I've noticed that OB was really hyped up and then many people ended up being disappointed, and this time round very little has been revealed about Skyrim. I think Bethesda are keeping their cards close so that they don't generate superhype and then have moaning fans afterwards.

Well, that statement isn't entirely true. In fact the TES fan base increased dramatically after the release of Oblivion, and many of their long time fans, myself included, enjoyed it as well. I believe they have up to this point stayed true to their history. I do however agree with you to a degree with skepticism of the "Sprint" idea. I'm not sure how speed will be calculated without a speed stat or athletics, so will our speed and jump abilities stay the same always, or gradually increase with levels. That is something I'm unsure of, but overall I'm fairly confident they will stay true and even expound on the genre known as Role-play.

Hang with friends, find a chick to date with, visit a festival, play another computer game, and get on with it ...

I wasn't aware anyone above curate level could actually have a life (friends, girlfriend, go out, ect...) :whistling:

Then chickens become the dominate race.

I see what you did.

OT: Skyrim won't fail. It'll definitely be better than Oblivion, which was great, but not as good as Morrowind. I'm betting Skyrim will fall in-between (just because of how high the bar that Morrowind set is.)

I have faith.

Will the game live up to all the hype?

No, the tech that's there does have it's limits.

Will it have flaws?

It's guaranteed to, find me a game that doesn't.

Will I still enjoy the game despite all this?

Yes, I have played every game in the series, replayed most of them, and enjoyed all of them. I may not have time to play all of them, so many games, so little time after all, but I do enjoy them when I do.

So Bethesda might disappoint some, they have yet to disappoint me, and they will not disappoint me with Skyrim. Now whether I'll have time to play it and Mass Effect 3, that's another story.

If it bombs, it bombs. No point worrying about it until it comes out. I have too much faith in Beth to let it down though. Every single game they have released so far has been astounding. I have no reason to think differently. And it would be an uncharacteristic doubt to question them now.

Its simply not going to happen.
It has too much momentum.

If it happens it will be about half a year/ a year after release when the glaring bugs havent been adressed.
When/ if the modders find out its less tweakable than Oblivion.

I think everybody would grab Pitchforks and try to summon an Oblivion gate outside the Rockville Md office if Skyrim truly bombed.

This one gets my vote.

I'm convinced it can't bomb in the Dragon Age 2 way, but assuming it bombs I go back and play Morrowind and Kotor.

Few games do meet my critical psyche, oddly those I have the lowest expectation of do the best.
The more hype this game gets more than likely on release I'll find more to dislike.

NV really looked forward to it, on release felt not everything was presented as the hype suggested.
DA:2 I hated pre release, now I'm just disapointed.
Witcher 2 I had lots of hope for, atm I'm feeling annoyed with it.

Skyrim not enough info tbh, but I hope they stick to facts rather than PR boosts and hype from the dev team.

All that unwanted info above aside, I'll probably just keep playing Skyrim and find things to do that are not obvious but loads of fun.

I've already considered the possibility. I realize there is no other series for me to find, I've looked. But yet I have a feeling that it will be terrible, for me at least.

I don't feel like I should need to mod a game to make it better. If that were the case I'd mod a better game engine, not that I'd succeed much.

1. Obsidian Entertainment (who aren't known for making great games)
2. BioWare pulled by EA's greed
3. CD Projekt (meh, no comment)
