What if Skyrim Requires Steam?

Post » Wed Feb 16, 2011 6:34 am

People are drama queens; it would sell just fine as a Steamworks title. Still, DRM doesn't work beyond potentially delaying properly functioning pirated copies for a week or two at most, so I fail to see why you wouldn't offer a disc version with a disc check.

What major titles require you to log on to Steam to play them right now? This isn't a jerk question, I'm honestly not aware of any, but I'm not completely up to speed on the games industry.

Of course it'll sell; that's not the issue. We as consumers shouldn't even care about that. The question is whenever or not some of us are willing to buy it. I want a functioning game that doesn't rely on 3rd party software (software I despise, I might add) to have it run. I don't want publicity shoved down my throat, I don't want updates to screw everything up and I certainly don't want more applications running in the background to potentially decrease performance. Windows is enough of a cluster !@#$ of a platform as it is.

Steam is a platform I NEVER asked for nor want. If the game comes out on PC, Windows should be its only requirement as far as software goes. Bethesda made Xbox and PS3 versions of their games to expand their audience. What good does having it exclusively on Steam do? I'm not on Xbox, PS3 or Steam... So they're effectively reducing their audience.

Sure, I'll buy the game but it wouldn't make sense for me to buy it if it requires Steam... because I'm not going to play it. It's that simple.

Civilization V. There's a CD version, but it installs Steam. Many others have mentioned New Vegas as well.

I think they already said it will require steam. They said they didn't like Windows Live and will be using Steam instead. Considering you couldn't play either Fallout games without windows live, I doubt you'll be able to play Skyrim without Steam.

I won't get the pc version if Steam is required, simple as that. If it truly does, thank the Gods I have a 360.

With me it is not a question of not liking Steam. I absolutely HATE Steam. I have had no end of nightmares with that system. I am unable to play most games that I have ever purchased with them and I have probably in addition to the wasted money, probably wasted a full two days just on trying to make Steam work.

I have no problems with Steam being an 'optional' method for people to purchase and play the game, more power to those who like Steam. But if Steam is 'required' to play, even to so much as activate (as in the case of New Vegas), then I am most emphatically NOT purchasing Skyrim. I absolutely refuse to pay good money for a game that some third party may now or later simply decide, for whatever reason, to no longer let me install, 'after' I have paid for it. And that IS the case right now for me with Steam.

Myself I'd rather if it requires Steam to work. Why? Mostly because it means I'll be able to hunt for the best possible deal on the game and still be certain I'll be able to add the game to my Steam collection :P I'd have no qualms if instead of Steam I'd be able to add it to my Impulse collection or stuff like that either.

What I don't want is a game that requires the CD/DVD to install or even to work.

I wouldn't really mind. I've got Steam installed anyway so it wouldn't be an inconvenience to me.

Do people actually think that putting "/thread" at the end of their posts makes their opinions more valid or something?

I'd still buy it if it requires Steam.

EDIT:

An interesting poll would be to ask those that claimed they would not buy Civ 5 or Fallout New Vegas (as quoted in your poll) because of Steam, and find out whether or not they actually bought it. Because it's all well and good saying now you won't buy it, but when all your friends are playing it and itt gets perfect 10s on every single site, then it might be a different story :P

I played Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 just fine. I bought FONV and had trouble with it because of Steam. I took the game back and received a refund.

For what it is worth. I would very much prefer not to use Steam for myself. If you like it, then use it. If I can only get Skyrim on Steam, then I will try, but I do not look forward to the prospect of the Steam hassle.

Please Beth. I just want to put my cd in the DVD drive, and play. That's all. Is that too much to ask?

Edit: Just wanted to add this...I think FO3 was from Bethesda, and FONV was Obsidian.

Further, if Bethesda has stated that Steam is required for Skyrim, I would like to have that fact docmented by a link please.

Thanks!

I think why digital distribution like Steam is so popular to game developers is the fact that they don't have to waste their time on a copy protection scheme and they save a ton of money on the distribution costs of making DVD's, manuals, maps, etc. Of course they have to pay Valve but I just bet that is much cheaper then boxing their product and selling it that way.

If it's available only on Steam, it's bad.
If you require Steam to activate Skyrim but you can buy it at any stores, that's good.

I'll buy it for the xbox if it requires steam.
How sad, I'd like to play with some mods...

But I refuse to deal with 3rd party software enabling software I purchased.
I bought it, I should be able to use it without requiring a 3rd party.

From what I read about it it kind of sounds like battle.net for WoW players. I didnt necessary hate the idea of them using B.net to manage their games and downloads etc but I thought it wasnt really needed. So I guess I hope they dont require steam, its like putting a restriction on MY game that I purchased.

The difference is that Battle.net is serviced by the developers and it's not a different application that you need to install. The games (Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft, Diablo 3) are designed to run on it and Battle.net is designed for these games. I admit it's not perfect, but it's way better than Steam. You can even play Starcraft 2 without connecting to the service, you'll just be limited to the campaign.

I don't mind steam for digital distribution, but if I buy a hard copy I better not need steam.
Otherwise, I'll buy it on the xbox.

Because I don't want 3rd party software on my PC.

You have a lot more than 3 parties running when you play a PC game. If you had just the game and windows without any other party letting you play, you wouldn't get very far.

Your sort of null argument that drives the hate against Steam is completely asinine.

Especially when you'd be willing to sacrifice the awesomeness that is mods for the sake of an ideal that doesn't even hold up.

EDIT:

The above is @ BoredVirulence too.

Must be hard just having windows and nothing else installed on your PC. You use internet Explorer I take it?? Because any other browser is sure as hell a 3rd party software.
