What if Skyrim Requires Steam?

Post » Wed Feb 16, 2011 7:04 am

The survey I've had up on Survey Monkey has been running for over a month now and there are now 286 respondents to the three questions. See my signature for link to the survey and to the responses.

The same as the previous poll threads that were run here on TES, this survey shows pretty clearly that there is a sizeable fraction of prospective TESV Skyrim buyers who say they will not buy the game if it is only availalbe via Steam: something like 40% in the Survey Monkey survey; something like 23% in the previous poll I ran here on the forums.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1158809-what-if-skyrim-is-steam-exclusive/page__st__160__p__17000337__fromsearch__1#entry17000337

I would like to pass on this information to Bethesda so that those who might be making the decision to distribute Steam the same way as Fallout New Vegas can weigh the information appropriately. I'll be happy to provide the raw data to them, including the IP addresses to establish that the responses were not simply replications.

I highly doubt it will REQUIRE Steam. It is a single player game after all, not everybody has an internet connection.

Whether it is bad or not IMO is irrelevant, and doesn't reflect on the question of it being exclusively distributed through Steam. Steam "not being so bad" is not a good reason for it to be the only form of distribution, as is the case with Fallout New Vegas, a single player game, as well as Civilization 5, also for singleplayer or multiplayer irrespective.

When I was last active on here a few weeks back, the consensus seemed to be that it had not yet been made clear whether it would be Steam exclusive distribution or not (as is FONV). I'm trying to influence that decision before it is too late.

ADDIT: IMO, as long as there is still risk that Bethesda will decide to make Skyrim Steam Exclusive distribution, this topic cannot be discussed too much.

It behooves us as fellow gamers and consumers to press for the game to be distributed via a variety of channels, with Steam being only one option for validation and playing the game.

@ Gandler and those who share your love of Steam: for your sake, I hope it is available to you via Steam.

For my sake and those who share my disinterest in using Steam, I also hope it is available via other means that do not involve installation of the Steam client app or networking to the Steam servers in order to play the game.

I hope we can agree, more options for us as gamers is better than fewer. Those of you who love Steam should have the option to buy and play the game that way. Those of us who do not want to participate in Steam should have other options.

The fact that something like 25 to 40% of us do not want to have to use Steam is no justification for the game to be made not available via Steam.

However, the fact that something like 30 to 40% of you love Steam and will buy it perhaps _because_ it is available on Steam is no justification for the game to be made only available via Steam, in the way FONV, Civ5, etc. have recently been distributed.

Definitely not... as I posted on a previous thread:

I absolutely refuse to purchase a game that requires a steam (or any equivalent) subscription. Honestly, if it were not illegal, I would vastly prefer to download a pirated copy and send a monetary amount to the developer. I want to be able to install and play my game 10 years from now if both the developer and STEAM are either 1) out of business or 2) no longer support this 'old' game. Currently, this would not be possible. I sincerely hope that Bethesda does not opt for this option. Regarding prior games that have been launched with steam, empirical observation indicates that the developers are losing a lot of sales by forcing players to use steam. Additionally, this strategy does not appear to effect piracy (after all, shortly after the games are released, pirated versions are readily available free of steam).

FYI - I do not intend to redirect this post into a discussion on the disadvantages/merits of steam. Additionally, I strongly disagree with piracy of games. If the user disagrees with the usage of a program like steam, the best way to convince the developer to part company with steam is to boycott the product and contact the developer with your concerns.

I'll pass on Skyrim if it requires Steam to install and run just as I have done on a number of other Steam dependant titles. If it's simply going to be sold through their store as an option though then there's no problem.

I've given Steam plenty of chances and it's always been a pain. Amazingly though I've had no problems whatsoever with GFWL, Securom, Tages etc. Suggest those as being mandatory and all hell breaks loose though.

Steam fans, this might be difficult for you but do please try to realise that it isn't a workable setup for everyone.

I would buy it whether it requires Steam or not.

If it was Games for Windows Live, I would be mad however.

That's rather selfish of you. And of course Skyrim will be available on Steam no matter if it require it or not.

I buy hard copies only. I don't care how mega-amazing TES V turns out to be, I flatly refuse to pay out good money to rent an intangible product. Granted, it's probably using the least invasive DRM but I'd rather have the hard copy and suffer the evils of SUX-ROM than enduring the lag infested STEAM delivery system.

If you don't buy the game because it'll run on Steam, then you're an idiot. The truth.

No, the complete opposite actually. Idiots are the ones who believe everyone else should love steam because they do...like forcing your preferences on others.
I don`t want that crap on my system and i`ll stick with my preference, thank you very much.

Buying a CD/DVD isn't even a SAFE bet anymore considering the [censored] [censored] fiasco with Civilization V... you buy the CD and you install [censored] Steam. What. The. [censored]?

I don't care how good Skyrim might turn out to be but if it HAS to require Steam, it might as well be a steaming pile of [censored].

Give me a non-Steam CD/DVD package. It's a matter of principle (on multiple fronts) and convenience. Man, just thinking about it makes my blood boil.

I'll just continue to play the previous Elder Scrolls games... it's as simple as that.

New Vegas required Steam too.

I don't mind myself if it requires Steam, but I know other people don't like it. So if possible, let it be optional. But only if it means we're not getting GFWL either. Otherwise, Steam all the way.
