What If Skyrim is Steam Exclusive?

"Resource hog".

Okay.

Are you using Gboost or Game Booster by any chance?

Curious, what do those have to with Steam?

Just wondering. Either one of those frees up more resources that Windows is using for the average user than Steam probably uses.

Steam uses less resources than Firefox, or Explorer.exe or Solitaire. People seem to absolutely hate it using resources, but many don't seem to use tools that will gain them even more resources.

Idle curiosity, to tell you the truth.

ah, I misunderstood, I was thinking that you might say they may cause a conflict making Steam seem like a resource piggie.

sorry.

I'd rather have the physical copy than deal with Steam's startup times, update times and download times but if I really have to use that system then meh.

what are your thoughts on Steam for the physical copy, that's what the discussion is about.

Then I'll most likely not get it at all on the PC. Steam is a resource hog and I won't have that "Bloatware" on any system I own.

I always have to chuckle when I read something like this and open the task manager. That greedy pig called Steam, eating all those 16MB of memory... ^_^

Not necessarily true. I've booted up my computer dozens of times without internet access, and every time, Steam says "we cannot connect to the internet, would you like to try again, or start in offline mode?"

I've had this experience as well, when my Internet was down. It took only a few seconds to switch to offline mode.

If it is in anyway required to be used or activated or anything online, the PC version of Skyrim will never see the inside of my house. I have shoddy dial-up, with a 56K modem I've never seen actually get up to such a blistering speed, but I wouldn't even think of getting a single-player game that required online anything regardless of my connection.

Not a fan of Steam AT ALL, don't use it download games with. Prefer physical copies and the games tend to be more expensive on Steam.

Buuuuut since I have it because I'm forced into using it (and I only use it to authenticate games (although don't all these other games companies have their own servers to authenticate from?!? Why do they all have to jump on the Steam bandwagon?)) if I want to play the likes of FONV, Metro 2033, DoW 2, AvP etc etc it's a moot point really, I will buy Skyrim if it's Steam only.

I really, really hope it isn't though.

Inflammatory Statement (now imagine HK-47's voice): I wonder how many people who say they will not buy the game if it is Steam-exclusive intend to obtain it via less honest methods if possible.

I myself am a fan of Steam, but I am somewhat concerned about certain policy directions it has taken rather recently, especially how some games require online status in order to play them.

By the way, the original post was very well written. Kudos to the OP.

There's only a few things that could stop me from buying Skyrim.

Steam is not one of them.

As far as Steam Exclusive goes, it's not that I won't, it's that I can't. Some of us have no way of buying something online.

That’s a really good point.

Ive never used steam, so I have no opinion about it, but I hope people remember that not everyone can purchase over the internet.

Hell, not everyone has high-speed internet access, XBL, or for that matter, internet access at all.

As someone who doesn't use Steam; if it is Steam activated, will I be required to install the whole Steam program?

Yes. but its a small program.

If I do have to install it, is it very intrusive?

You can deactivite the autolog on if you find that autolog is intrusive but it doenst do much other than being your game library and having a friend list.

How often does it need updating roughly?

The program itself about once a month , the game , it depends on the developer

Does it require to be running in the background when playing a Steam activated game?

No but it does not matter you can leave it open it wont do anything.

Either or, doesn't matter. For some games a box is nice. May as well try to continue the tradition with the elderscrolls.

To anyone who said they won't buy it if it requires anything steam related:

You are a bunch of little liars. No way in hell are you going to go "NO NO NO" while we enjoy our new epic game, and rub it in your stubborn noses all over the forums. You will give in sooner or later.

That is, if Skyrim requires anything steam related.

It doesn't only use 16MB of memory, though. Look at how more total RAM the computer use before and after starting Steam. It's closer to 100MB.

The task manager doesn't read the memory usage of the invidivual processes correctly. If you add them all up, it won't get anywhere near the total RAM usage.

Heh, I have 9 gigs of ddr3 ram on my rig so I don't care. I love steam, though I'll be buying the collectors edition regardless of weather it's on steam or not. I have never understood why people hate steam....can someone explain?

are 69 people honestly going to limit their experience just because it would be on steam?
