What If Skyrim is Steam Exclusive?

Wouldn't buy if only on Steam. Simple as that. Will never again put Steam on my computers.

I love Steam.

I think Steam's previous versions, as well as its dislike for many programs (mostly Norton and McAffee, as well as loads of other bloatware), have put many people off. Personally I've never had a problem that couldn't be solved by deleting clientregistry.blob :geek:

Steam is great. I'd love for it to be on there.

It seems to me the people that hate steam are the people were are susceptible to fear mongering.

If your definition of "Steam exclusive" means "uses Steamworks", as the poll uses it, the title of this thread does not need an "if".
Oh, and I don't have a problem with Steam.

Why should a single player only game require you to be hooked up to the interwebs to install it?

I would point out that, if Steam is exclusive, we "Steamophobes" who are resolved not to particpate in Steam, simply don't get to play the game(s), whereas you "Steamophiles" lose nothing.

If Steam is one option for distribution (similar to Mount&Blade Warband which is available by Steam and also through the Gamersgate online store) then we Steamophobes have the opportunity to enjoy the game, and continue to be engaged members of the fan community, and again, you Steamophiles lose nothing. IMO, Steam exclusivity must be weighed against the intrinsic costs of alienating part of the fanbase. Steam exclusivity may offer benefits to Bethesda about which I can only speculate, but I would really like to encourage them to consider the tradeoffs carefully, and that is what this poll is intended to promote.

It's obvious that "Steamophiles" lose nothing if it is Steam exclusive whereas "Steamophobes" may choose not to play the game.

However, your second point is wrong. If Steam is just an option for distribution without Steamworks, "Steamophiles" lose out on some Steam features.

I'll buy Skyrim with or without Steamworks since I'm not someone prone to saying "my way or the highway" but I would prefer Steamworks like FO:NV.

Already pre-ordered my physical copy through Amazon for a mere £27.99 :D would like to activate it through Steam actually for all the extra benefits, easy updating and not having to worry about breaking/losing the disc.

No offense, but these polls are stupid. Steamlovers are fan-boys and will obviously vote up their favorite monopoly, Steam. This is the whole reason I didn't include a poll option on my two threads. Also, chances are that Steamlovers outnumber sane gamers on these forums.

I am opposed to the game having full Steam integration. However, I am not opposed specifically to Steam. Rather I am opposed to each and every form of online activation. I want a retail copy of the game with a physical disc and which doesn't rely on an internet connection so that I can play the game at my own terms. If a game requires online activation I am at the mercy of whoever is managing that online activation and I do not want to be at anyone's mercy to play my games.

I understand the need to protect against day zero piracy. So I'm not against Bethesda using online activation with all the games they ship at release (providing they clearly mark that on the box). However, once whatever protection they use is broken, I would be willing to pay double for a copy of the game which doesn't require online activation.

I won't really care. If it's Steam exclusive, I'll buy it there. It makes no difference to me.

I have nothing against Steam, its just the whole "you must have internet to play!" thing that turns me away from it. I have no reliable form of internet that can handle what steam demands when installing and playing games. I don't mind this with MP games, that's an online game but a single player game should not require you to have internet to just play. Yes I know of offline mode, but you "must have internet" to even get to offline mode. Not to mention the whole "must preform mandatory update no mater what you told us even with automatic updates off" really ticks me off. With me having little to no internet unless i lug a ~100 pound computer halfway across town just to play my game because my only reliable internet is from a friend with cable, to my nothing "sometimes dial-up if i get spare money, being jobless does this." internet connection, it really hampers me. I want to play a single player game without the need of internet, it's the reason I buy a "SINGLE PLAYER" game, not a multi-player game.

This was my 37 cents.

How about both?

Also, you do not have to have internet to play Steam. Just start it in offline mode.

I don't use steam so I'd rather not have to install it just for Skyrim.

As far as I'm concerned, Steam is just another peice of software I have to maintain and keep updated; it will be a burden.

If you have Steam games and stuff, then great, I can see why you like it. But what about those of us who have NO Steam games at all and this is just another peice of software to sit idle on our harddrive and waste space and time it takes to keep it updated.

As far as Steam Exclusive goes, it's not that I won't, it's that I can't. Some of us have no way of buying something online.

That was my immediate thought. I'd be more than annoyed if it was only available on steam. That and I'd rather buy a hard copy of it, and not spend two or more hours downloading it. My luck something would get corrupted in the download and I'd have to sit for another two hours and download it again. :P I have Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion in hard copy, in their boxes--well Arena came with Daggerfall when I bought that hell like ten years ago now--but I'd like to have them all in their boxed form, with the discs.

So you buy it in the store; and it has steamworks built in.

It's just the first time you play that you have to be online, in order to activate the game. you can buy the boxed version from retail, activate it once online and then play exclusively offline forever if you want to. And by the way, since you are posting this message on a forum, it would appear that you are currently in a place with online access.

Most other high profile boxed PC games you can buy these days will have some sort of online activation. Some do not, of course, but DRM-free triple-A titles would seem to be in a dwindling minority.

Anyways. Like I said, I have nothing against Steam, its just I have internet problems, so the whole needing the internet to use steam "even if its for just the first time" is a little over the top for me.

I like Steam, but I do think some of their features need an update.

Aside from insuring the patch/no-patch toggle works 100% of the time, I'd like to see them implement a way to log into your steam account from an internet cafe or library (on their computers) and have Steam create a customized encrypted patch file for your account that can be downloaded onto a USB drive and then applied to your account on your own computer at a different location.

This would, at least, enable Steam DRM and patching to be available for those with unreliable access to the internet.
