So what is skyrim ?

Post » Tue Jul 29, 2014 12:01 am

Hello everyone , been a while . EDIT .. on xbox 360

I always hear people talk about skyrim and have always told myself I will get it , but in the last few years I was more interested in action , shooters games and from what I have heard skyrim lacks in this department , so I skipped skyrim v .

However having completed ds2 to finalise my collection I find myself no longer interested in the simple predictable storyline which involves just randomly killing the 'evil' person .

I am more interested in games that are Imersive and have rich detailed rpg systems and areas and I know skyrim wins in this department .

So instead of asking should I buy this game I am going to ask you .. The community about skyrim itself .

3rd person or 1st person ? , how are the rpg elements , from a lore perspective how detailed is it , how buggy is it , how does it link in with previous elder scrolls games , should I have played oblivion before , how does levelling up work ? Are they classes that affect this ? , are there any interesting npc characters , are companions in this like fallout 3 , how does inventory management work ? .

Also is there anything I should know or expect before playing skyrim ?

Finally I would like to know what specific features/areas/things you love about skyrim and why it keeps you coming back .

Skyrim is 1st/3rd person sandbox RPG, you can choose which viewing angle you want altough in certain circumtances 3rd person is forced.

Character system is based on a simple rule: you learn by doing. To improve one-handed skill you need to use it. The same goes to everything else.

The game is a bit buggy as one would expect game of this size to be. Thus PC-version with Unofficial Patches has the advantage. Also the vanilla UI is horrendous but on PC there's a fix for that too.

I think you are getting lost in translation here...

The series is not called Skyrim. It's The Elder Scrolls. "Skyrim" is just the title of the 5th installment. It is a very immersive game. It is an amazing gameworld and has a huge replay value, if one doesn't try to do everything with one character.

No need to play previous games, each TES is independent case.

No apology necessary, my friend. No, you don't "need" to play Obl to enjoy Skyrim. Skyrim is set 200 yrs after the events of Obl and while the lore is connected, Skyrim does not directly correlate off of it's predecessor.

ah... ninjd'...lol

The best advise i could give someone that has never played the series, let alone Skyrim itself is...

  • Forget about the forums "unless" you have and issue and cannot figure it out or cannot advance gameplay.
  • Forget about the UESP or any other TES Wiki.
  • Create your character with a specialized yet general focused set of skills.

and... just play.

?The single greatest aspect of the game is exploration and finding out things on your own.

The "newest = bigger, better, funnier" is mostly irrelevant when we're talking about Elder Scrolls games. While every TES game is set in the same universe, each game is set in different place of the world, at different time, with separate stories not being directly connected to each other. And even if we're talking about the gameplay itself, then every game is different, too. Even the folks at Bethesda say that "with every game they start fresh, and reinvent something". So every Elder Scrolls game is quite different even in as basic elements as levelling, skills and combat. Every game has some new things and gameplay elements, but often lack some features seen only in previous games.

There's a saying that the first TES game you play is going to be your favourite. It's often true, but here at the forums we've seen many people trying Oblivion, and even the good old Morrowind, and then realize they are more fond of the older titles.

So basically every TES game is great on it's own.

Take your time while adventuring, there's no hurry and exploring is the best part of the series. Stick your nose everywhere, but prepare to have it bitten off here and there. Retreat is the smartest thing sometimes and you can come back later. Also, remember to save, save, save :D

Have you played the Fallout games?

Opinion is divided on characters compared to Fallout. I find Skyrim's NPCs very flat compared to New Vegas and marginally less interesting than Fallout3. There is also very little depth or choice available in most conversations. Some people love characters like Serana, Mjoll the Lioness, Farkas, and Erik the Slayer, but you get pretty much no personal interaction with them, apart from maybe Serana. Followers in Skyrim don't have much in the way of quests or backstory.

That said most of them have a fair bit to say in the right situations and the whole world does feel fairly "alive" with NPCs with jobs often doing things. I still find new things to do 3 years on.
