What sort of music do you guys want in Skyrim?

Post » Sat Nov 14, 2009 4:08 pm

I want a lot of music in Skyrim. Noticeably more than there is in Morrowind or Oblivion. In Morrowind there's only explore music and battle music, which was really poor. In Oblivion they slightly improved this by giving the game dungeon music as well. But I want more specific music that plays depending on the location and/or time. For example, pretty much every medival RPG except MW and OB had Tavern music. Why didn't MW or OB have that? Skyrim should have tavern music, specific music for each town and a lot more.

Also, I'm not particulary fond of Jeremy Soule who made the MW and OB soundtracks, even though he no doubt is making the music for Skyrim too judging from what we heard in the teaser. But I think that other RPGs like The Witcher (composed by Adam Skorupa), have a much better soundtrack. I would be most pleased if it turned out that Adam Skorupa did most of the soundtrack or something, but that won't happen :P

I wouldn't mind a more dynamic approach to music, depending on the area where the player is in and flow into one another as the player moves. This could make things a lot more interesting than hearing the same tunes over and over in every single dungeon/town/countryside and could add to the dramatic.

Imagine climbing the Seven Thousand Steps to High Hrothgar with the same generic exploration music you've been hearing the entire game. Now imagine it with a music score specifically designed to play for the Seven Thousand Steps to High Hrothgar. To me the latter could make the climb much more interesting; because of the music.

So kinda similar to the way the sky changed slowly when the player came near an Oblivion gate in TES4 (the road to Kvatch); but with music :)

This could also translate to towns and villages where each may have subtle differences in style and architecture (especially if there are different clans) but also in the music.

Regional and situational music would be awesome in my opinion, and make this game even more unique and feel more like walking through a fantasy movie. :goodjob:

Miltiades pretty much has nailed what I would like to see (hear, rather) from the soundtrack. :goodjob:

If the teaser theme is any sign of what's to come I'll be pleased.

I'll take Jeremy Soule, Morrowind/Oblivion style music, again.

I'd rather have epic trumpets, tubas, and trombones.

Perfect loading screen music ;)

but whatever composer did the previous games did a good job. I have no doubt they'll have a good soundtrack to this game. With music that fits the mood of whatever situation your in.

I think voice driven music would be awesome rather than instruments. I don't know what type of songs nords would sing but perhaps they tell tales in song. Maybe when you're traveling up and down the mountain sides you can hear far off in the distance the sounds of nord clans singing traditional songs around bon fires about how they conquered and died and drank a lot in between. Maybe some of them are funny, maybe some of them are sad and melancholy.

I think it would be great to have music similar to the arena tavern music in the taverns, or just more arena-sounding music in general. I thought they did arena really well, and would like to hear more of that type of music.

Percussion. Woodwind. Male choir.

And that is all we need.

The important thing will be drums. And possibly pipes.

Look, I'm all for the woodwind pieces when exploring through Skyrim's forests. I do think there should be pub songs playing in the various taverns, salutes to brothers fallen, loves lost, times remembered, etc.

But I also want to see a larger amount of the epic music during important moments. In Oblivion for example: when on 'Light the Dragonfires,' the Septims' fanfare should be playing while riding from Weye to the very gates of the Imperial City. The Emperor of freakin' Tamriel is riding in to claim his throne. Guards should be out in force, both because the quest has the civilians of the Imperial City indoors under martial law, but also to offer salute to their new emperor. That eight second bit with trumpets? Nowhere near sufficient.

Granted, there's no indication of a Septim Emperor in this game. Still, there will be a moment where a nice epic segment is required. This being Skyrim, a chorus of Nords chanting wouldn't be too bad.

I agree there weren't enough tracks in the previous games's soundtrack, the got repetitive and boring pretty fast. My personal bane is with the combat music, I think it's way too epic for most of the fighting you did: having http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GOh8JjFP08 play for fighting a rat or other non-threat felt bad, just bad.

An easy minimalist solution would have been to just remove music from low level combat, and keep it for stuff like ogres and minotaurs, and whatnot. This way, this epic music actually feels epic when it needs to, as opposed to being good the first 5 minutes after which it becomes repetitive and downright annoying.

I don't remember hearing music in Half-Life 2 all the time but I remember that it always fit, fast paced tunes kicked in at the right time and made you hurry up even though didn't practically have to. Another good example was in the end mission of Mass Effect 2, Bioware got the "it's now or never!" atmosphere down perfectly and gave the mission a sense of cohesion despite being broken down into several parts. There was special music for special areas, not just a few tracks applied to every situation of this or that type.
