What is Steam?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 1:56 pm

People keep telling me that I should get Fallout: New Vegas and all of the dlc for steam. Is that for PS3 or is that just a PC thing? I don't play PC games, only PS3 games because of the trophies and the controller. I really don't understand what Steam is.

Steam is a database that you can run loads of games from, published by valve.

But it is only avaliable on the pc.

You can use a ps3 controller on PC, and Steam has the same trophies as PSN for New Vegas.

Thanks for the info. I'll just wait for New Vegas Ultimate Edition to come out for the PS3 on February 7th and pick it up then. Now I know I can't get a discounted New Vegas and dlc for the PS3 so I will just wait for the Ultimate Edition. $50 is a pretty good deal. Hopefully it works correctly and doesn't have the problems that Fallout 3 GOTYE had.

Eh, depends. Seems to vary from system to system. The pS3 is almost always plagued with problems, however. Expecially considering it's memory is split in two, instead of consolidated like it should have been from the get go.

This. If you're waiting for the Ultimate Edition, get it for PC. The mods and the overall stability make it a superior choice over any of the console ports. Xbox is a little more stable than PS3, but Gamebryo/Creative Engine games tend to be really, really buggy on PS3 due to the split memory issue. Xbox mainly has issues with crashing due to memory overload, and PC issues tend to stem more from the game's coding and engine than from the PC itself, so as long as your PC is decent you'll be able to handle it.

Still rather annoying - my PC copy crashes every few hours, so saving is ESSENTIAL, especially in the DLCs where the game may not autosave for several hours and then proceed to crash.

I've never really understood what the problem is people have with Steam. I've had it for years, haven't had any issues and I am loving the deals.

Steam's not bad, it's just not appropriate for a single player game. My main issue is being pinged by my friends constantly, so with Skyrim I skirted around using Steam and just updated manually. Not sure if it's legal to install games without Steam or not, but for Skyrim I couldn't take being pinged by my friends (ruined a lot of the dialogue in NV, because the noise kept popping up and interrupting my game).

I set myself to always appear offline to everyone. No pinging problems for me!

You can set your status? O: I'll have to try that on my current NV play-through. Maybe I'll actually be able to take in the Burned Man's dialogue without being irritated by noises every minute or so.

It's the internet, what were you expecting? Suffice to say my problem with Steam isn't with Steam itself, it's with having it forced down my throat even if I buy the game retail. Steam is a viable option if you want to buy games digitally, and I've bought games from them digitally, but I shouldn't be forced to use it, especially not for a single player only game that I bought at a local store. That's all I'm going to say on the matter.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering what that stuff was. Anyways I guess that I'm glad that I don't have to use steam because I play PS3 games. So I take it you have to be signed in to be able to use any Steam game. So if my internet was down I would be screwed. My internet goes down quite a bit, that's why I like 1 player RPGs so much.

You can tell Steam to run in Offline mode, I believe.

Except that it will still tell you it needs an internet connection to run. Funny offline mode, that.

Yeah, offline mode is terrible with Steam.

I'm getting an inkling that the reason why I am apparently in a vocal minority on these forums for my love of Steam is because I have a very solid wireless internet connection that I have not had any major problems with for the past couple of years.

You're in the apparent minority only because the millions of us who like Steam generally don't need to say anything (and when we do, it's totally wasted effort). The vocal minority would be those noisy folks who spend all day complaining about it.

And I'm not kidding about the millions part. Steam's concurrent users varies between 2.4 million at the low end and 4.5 at its peak, cycling every day. I couldn't even guess at how many unique users are on Steam in a given month, nor how many are perpetually in offline mode and so don't get counted.

I like Steam, but probably because I have an internet connection. I heard that you have to activate a game by having an internet connection on the first time, so if a game supports Steam by default, you may be screwed if you are at the cabin for a weekend, and just popped the disc in there. Once you have that first connection, you are fine for life anyways. When my internet goes down, I can always rely on my Steam games. Games like Oblivion and New Vegas don't even have high system requirements anyways, thank the Lord.

I mentioned that I'm in the vocal minority because those of us who defend Steam are in the minority of those who are vocal.
