I'm in Gothway Gardens and a guy in the mages guild told me that somebody wanted us to kill some imps, but he didn't tell me where the imps are. He mentioned that "everybody in the street saw where the imps went" But I don't know how to ask the people in the street where they went.

Dont sound familiar, that quest. Gothway Gardens must be in Daggerfall, though, in the game Daggerfall

The 'Somebody' who wanted the imps gone has a name, and you can ask around where to find him. Or you can ask people directly (which to mee seems less likely) about the imps. Tell me about - any news, or Where is - General, or Work perhaps. Or maybe you just misread the original quest description. Sounds too strange to me.

The DF Mage's guild quest to kill an Imp sends one to a palace in a different town. I don't recognize the dialog that you mention from any quest.

Obviously, the quest giver needs to be visited for more info as to where.

I haven't played DF in a while, and just hearing the words "Gothway Gardens" makes me want to play it so bad. But I'm just beginning my workday, and by the time I'm done I will have forgotten...until the next time...

Talking to people in the street is just like talking to the guy in the Mage Guild.
You need to ask around to get some more info. Lots of quests in DF are like that - you need to spend some time digging out information.
Gothway Gardens id pretty close to the starting dungeon IIRC. The first place you go to visit shops and guilds. Yes, it does bring back memories. Unfortunately, I can't get DF to work on my PC, not even with DOSBox.
