What system will you be buying Skyrim for?

Post » Sat Jun 19, 2010 6:06 pm

Xbox First, PC later when I want to start exploring mods. I really like getting the achievements and the feel of a controller and being able to sit far away. I know you can hook up my computer to the TV and get a controller for it, I've actually done it before but it just isn't the same :)

PC, of course. I'm already saving money to buy a new one in October, with a planned minimum of:

- 6-Core AMD Phenom II CPU, 3,2 ghz per core.

- 12 GBs DDR3 1333.

- Nvidia Geforce GTX 570-580 (aiming for 580, hopefully prices get dropped by October), 1,5 gbs GDDR5.

That hopefully will run Skyrim smoothly at 1680x1050, and maybe more :)

Overkill for that resolution, also AMD does not support triple channel memory, meaning you can only run 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 GB of RAM.
Edit: And a few combinations of different capacity DIMMs.

Edit Edit:

No, it pretty much is the same.

I will be buying it for the PS3. What's going on with the underwhelming minority of PS3 players?

PC. By far my best system, and it has a 24" 1080p monitor too :D

By the way, is the GIGABYTE GeForce GTS-450 1gb gfx card a good purchase?

I believe you should begin eating now

Oh, PC and maybe Xbox

Then surely it's up to 16, then.

Also, I'm changing the monitor, too, so the resolution goes up to 1920x1080. The Full-HD era has come! :D

PC (If I do decide to buy it). Usually I wait a few months to see if a game is all hype.

Collector's Edition for Xbox on launch day, then PC version for the mods later once price goes down and I have a computer that'd run it.

Thanks for answering!

I haven't built the PC yet, as these are the sorts of issues I want to be informed about. I know practically nothing about the PC market anymore (it's been YEARS since I gamed on one), so my questions might seem silly. But: Could I get a graphics card that outputs video via HDMI, and a sound card that outputs audio via optical? I ask because the setup I have now relies on separate audio input for distribution to my speakers, and the audio quality is degraded if I run it through my TV.

Separately, my concern about resolution has more to do with the limits of my TV vs a computer monitor. As far as I understand (which isn't that far :sadvaultboy: ), the resolution of monitors can really outpace that of a big retail HDTV. Does this have a noticeable impact on the quality of the visuals between the two?

My card has a HDMI output (GTS 450), and while I'm not sure on the sound thing, if it's a viable method there will certainly be adapters for it.
Regarding TVs, the main difference between a TV and a Monitor is not resolution as much as pixel density - how many pixels there are per square inch, or in other terms, how small it can be and still maintain a high resolution. A TV is usually viewed from relatively far away and emphases size over quality (Because, mainly, HD media to actually play on it doesn't go above 1080p), wheras a monitor is the opposite - rather than trying to pack as little as it can into as large an area, it tries to pack as much as it can into a smaller area.

The practical upshot of this is that sitting where you'd normally watch your TV, playing video games, is likely to go well - though web browsing or text editing you'd start to see exactly why people don't use TVs for everyday use.

PC obviously. Mod support has always been super-awesome for Bethesda games. And the games are just better on the PC.

I will buy the collectors edition for xbox and play the heck out of vanilla and get it for PC later. If I get it for PC right away I will never get to the game because I'll just be modding and modding and modding and modding........

PC, of course. I would never buy a Bethesda game for a console.

I really wish I could buy this game for the PC, but I can't. So, I will probably go with the PS3 simply because its a better system, and I expect it to have slightly better graphics than the 360.
Maybe I'll have a laptop capable of running it in the future one day...

Although I have a decent PC I guess and Skyrim should run pretty well, (E8500 3.16, 4 gig of Ram, GTX285) I will probably get Skyrim for my PS3 to start off with, simply put it is just too much fun on my Sony Bravia 52 inch FullHD LCD screen, especially when you add in Surround sound! Playing on my PC's 22 inch 1680X1050 screen just doesn't have the same attraction, saying that however I will get it on the PC when the GOTY edition of Skyrim comes out just for the fun of Mods etc.

It is sorta funny though, always been a PC fan going back to when I played Arena, the PS3 is just easier to play atm since I am looking after my little 1 and a half year old girl, at least in the Living Area I can keep an eye on her, down in the Bedroom where the PC is it makes it a bit hard!

I own Oblivion for all three. Didn't buy them all at once, it just happened over the years.

I always buy TES and Fallout games for PC first. I love mods. But I always end up buying at least one console version at some point even if I don't set out to.

I will be building my new PC for Skyrim, since my current PC was built for Oblivion. I love my xbox 360 but the modding community is just amazing for the PC.

Xbox 360. Don't have a PC, but I have commandeered a Mac, so if there's a Mac game (doubt it) I might get that.

I could buy for PC but its getting a bit old (E8400 3.0Ghz, 4GB, HD4850) so I'm playing safe and getting it for PS3. Maybe when GOTY gets released I've upgraded my rig.

yea have to get if for the PS3, my laptop could play this game if its life depended on it not even with dumbing down the graphics...

plus i just like playing games on counsels better im probly in the minority but owell... i do have one exception to that though... i do prefer playing real time strategies on PC as its just difficult with counsels, though i guess i could get a mouse for the PS3
