Welcome to the forums! :tops:

It is never explained why there are Talon Company mercs in the Capitol Building. The only time there is any explanation on why they do anything is when they try to kill you for having good karma.

Their looking for "something" in the Capital ruins according to the Game Guide (I think). What it is no-one knows. But apparently they've been hired for it or are doing the searching out of their own prerogative.

They're looking for the ultimate copy of "Lying, Congressional Style."

I just assumed somebody hired them to do it. Something that would kind of make sense would be that the Enclave would like the building back as a way of showing the government is back, so they hired them basically as cannon fodder (under the guise of looking for an item). That makes a bit of sense if you go there for the first time after the Enclave are back, and all 3 factions are fighting. If you clear it out before the Enclave arrives, it would make sense if they don't show up there immediately afterwords because it wouldn't be a priority seeing it's already cleared of the Super Mutant threat.

snip

If that were the case though, once would assume the Enclave wouldn't be hostile to Talon Company then. Which obviously isn't the case. The Enclave commit bombing runs on at least two Talon Company positions after all.

If they're fodder, what does it matter? If Talon doesn't know they're hired by the Enclave, they might just start shooting. As long as they take care of some of the muties, they would be making the Enclave's job that much easier. After all, a group of Talon's should be no match for an Enclave soldier in power armor.

I'm reaching, but this whole thing is basically another plot hole anyways. it just seems like it was a random epic battle for the Capital. I can't remember if it's even tied into any quest. I just clear it out when I'm in the neighbourhood for the armor, XP, skill mags, and the behemoth kill.

Bethesda just wanted lots of splosuons in the capital building. Most things in this game don't have an (rational) explanation, they just "are".

I guess the Talons either had a lucrative contract to clear out the Capital, or they were looking for some kind of loot. Probably the former. It's not too difficult to believe that they'd be there.
