What do Templars do best?

Post » Thu Mar 27, 2014 1:57 pm

With the recent repeated nerfs to Templars, I'm trying to figure out how to build one that will be not only fun to play, but not gimped in PvP. This isn't a whine thread: I am honestly asking for advice from veteran players about how to build a useful Templar.

It seems to me that other classes can now do most things better than the Templar. CC, DPS, tanking, even healing (with a resto staff). Before you say, 'But a Templar can be built to do those things too!', let me qualify: Templars can of course be built to do those things, but I doubt they can do them any better than the other classes. So what I'm asking is:

--What is the Templar best at?

--How can I best build a Templar to be useful in PvE?

--How can I best build a Templar to be useful in PvP?

Thanks or any help anyone can give.

They don't really do anything "best". In fact, the other classes can do everything better unfortunately.

With the lack of really hard limitations on builds (meaning you have many choices on weapons, armor, skill lines) your best bet is to craft yourself into what brings you the most joy.

Most people will not be just a "tank" or a "healer" or a "dpser" so while you can certainly craft a classic "cleric" that doesn't ensure you will be entirely "useful" since the flexibility blurs the lines.

Looking pretty with shiny light/sun magic.
--How can I best build a Templar to be useful in PvE?
Tank. DPS is less useful and sought after than tanks. Healing is not optimal for Templar.
--How can I best build a Templar to be useful in PvP?
Just don't use a tank build and you'll be fine. Damage or support.

This is an ignorant statement.

It's really not. Come back when you get a few more posts under your belt.

This may be somewhat accurate now, but 30-60 days in when they start balancing classes it may change. best bet is play for yourself and if you're good at what you do, you'll be fine.

Not from what it looks like. I have no idea why they nerfed the templars. I've played through 4 beta weekends and they were never stronger than the rest of the classes.

Templars are really good tanks. They're also really good healers. Also good melee dps. They're really good ranged dps as well.

Now feel free to replace "templar" with the other classes as you see fit. Welcome to ESO.

That's ok, everyone (well not EVERYONE) will roll sorcs to heal and one day when they decide that wasn't what they intended those of us who go Templar will be rewarded.... or... we won't and we'll quietly kick ourselves.

I guess so. I could start making posts referencing news articles from the main site or informing people what you get when you purchase certain game packs. Then, all of my posts will be valid.

For those of you saying that Templars can be good tanks, can I ask: as good as Dragonknights or Sorcerors? Because it seems to me that both those clases get better CC and magicka management than Templars, both of which are important to tanks. Are you saying that Templars are better than those classes at tanking, or just that Templars, while inferior to both, can still be ok at tanking?

Honestly I'm old-fashioned. I am just going to make myself the best healing Templar I can be and regardless if there i a better sorc build or whatnot, if I'm dedicated to keep my compatriots' blood inside their bodies then they will love me long time.

What are they best at? I'll let you know when I've played it more. I will be playing one despite all the naysaying nerf cries. The way I see it, the Templar seems like an ideal Tank that has the added bonus of self healing and range. I will figure out how to make it work for me and my groups.

In almost every MMO I've played where people complain about a certain class being weak, it boils down to skill and play style, not the class.

All i'm saying is that after the healing nerf that Templars received, they aren't really more effective in anything else. Along with the fact that they have absolutely zero getaways in PVP unlike the Sorc and the NB, this makes them probably the worst class to choose now. Their healing was somewhat of their "savior" so to speak.

Sure they can tank, but both the DK and the Sorc can probably tank better.

Sure they can dps, but every other class can dps just as good if not better.

And the DK has way better CC and AOE.

Seems clear to me.

Yes it boils down to player skill, but the same skilled player would do even better playing another class. Just saying.

A lot of times it seems that way because a different class is easier to play, but usually the skilled player unlocks the potential of the more challenging class. Just saying.

I guess you could consider the Templar as solid in Healing, DPS, and Tanking but probably not the best in any role. They might just be the best jack of all trades which would give them versatility which certainly has value but with the skill system we have everybody can be a jack of all trades to some degree depending on how you build your character. I will probably make a Ranger type character out of the Templar with a Bow, some Magicka skills, and a touch of Healing. That should alleviate the current Magicka regen issues of the class and make me a solid DPS with some good group utility. I will just make it clear to any pickup group that I am not a main healer and not to expect me to save the entire party from a wipe if things go sour.

Might want to do a bit of research before painting people with such broad strokes.
