What's the Abbreviation?

Post » Tue Sep 06, 2011 7:47 am

Morrowind : MW :: Oblivion : OB :: Skyrim : SR

Based on the pattern, the first two syllables of the title have ended up used as the common abbreviation.

But then you're saying Morrowind should be MR? Mor-ro-wind.

As for Skyrim, it really doesn't matter. Skyrim is fine as is.

I'd go with Skyrim. No abbreviation has grown on me at all yet.

This is what these remind me of:
MW=Megawatt
OB=Obstetrics
SK=Slovakia (country code top-level domain .sk)
SR=Strontium or SR proteins

Somehow these two letter abbreviations just feel stupid. :) You go to some random gamer board and mention MW, they probably won't immediately think, "OH! He's/She's talking about Morrowind!"

I always found the abbreviations made up for the last 3 TES games to be bad. Not to fault whoever found them up there just isn't any good way to abbreviate Morrowind, Oblivion or Skyrim.

I've always stuck with the whole word with Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion and I'm gonna continue to do so for Skyrim.

Didn't use abbreviations for Oblivion, but for some reason I did use MW a lot when I was doing modding for Morrowind. I doubt I'll use one for Skyrim. Besides, abbreviations confuse new people, and I really am not that desperate to save a second by typing a few less characters.

I've inspired someone! You shall worship me as though I were a god!

I think its SR be cause you break Oblivion in O-Blivion -> OB (say O-Blivion and you can't stop anywear but the O or the end) and Morrowind is Morro-Wind -> MW (easy split... almost makes you stop at wind) and you just break Skyrim at Sky-Rim not S-kyrim because its Sky rim/ rim sky

sorry, the only god here is todd, and his pantheon of bethesda, its treason to name yourself a god.

seriously, though... that surpisingly makes decent sense for the abbreviations... basing them on the "break" in the words.

let that be it, then...

i guess all the abbreviations for the games must go like this, then?

AR - arena
DF - daggerfall
RG - redguard
BS - battlespire
MW - morrowind
OB - oblivion
SR - skyrim

that about right?

i forgot the names of the "travels" series, so i wont bother listing them... someone else can do it.

I use to abbreviate it 'Sky', sometimes.

You're right. That would put the emphasis on the wrong syllable. The 'ro' is kinda like a grace note.

I guess what I meant is the first two emphasized syllables. Anything but SK...

Agreed, but I think the main interest in an abbreviation is for the nomenclature of Skyrim's inevitable utilities (SRSE, TES5Edit, SRSR, SRMM, or whatever they end up being named).
AR - arena
DF - daggerfall
RG - redguard
BS - battlespire
MW - morrowind
OB - oblivion
SR - skyrim
Perfect, in my humble opinion. SK would deviate from the pattern in the the 'k' doesn't start a syllable.

Quoted for not necessarily truth, but headed in the right direction.
Unfortunately it is going to happen anyway, might as well know what everyone is talking about.

With abbreviations I always go for the ones that are the most phonetically pleasing to me personally, and both SK and SR have been bothering me since December. So SM it shall be. I DEMAND A NEW POLL OPTION!

Sort of a semi off-topic question really quick: While we are on the topic of abreviations, I keep seeing Pete Hines VP of PR. For the life of me I can't seem to figure out what PR means. Enlightenment please? :unsure:

On topic: I like Skyrim just fine. Sometimes when talking to people about it I just say "Sky". Usually when I mention dragons though everyone assumes its Skyrim :tes:

SR is the only thing that sounds right phonetically.

edit: PR is public resources, which moderates a company's dealings with customers and other outside parties/individuals.

Skyrim... I find the need to abbreviate everything has become tiresome ;)

(On a side note; Why is the the word abbreviation so long?)

I like using Skyrim, it's not difficult or long to type. If I do use one, though, it's TESV
