What's the Abbreviation?

Post » Mon Sep 05, 2011 11:19 pm

SK, sounds better for when a script extender comes out! :D
SR makes more sense though.

O-bli-vi-on and Mor-ro-wind take more time to pronounce than Sky-rim.

Not really

O Bliv' ion

First letter of the first two syllables works for Oblivion too.

It's not syllables but actual words.

AR = ARena
DF = Dagger-Fall
BS = Battle-Spire
RG = Red-Guard
MW = Morro(w)-Wind
OB = OBlivion
SR = Sky-Rim

Just Skyrim.
Seriously, not everything needs to be abbreviated. In my opinion it's just too short of a word to abbreviate.

I don't use abbreviations unless the site or board I'm on is the game I'm talking about. If I'm on a general board or typing someone I'll always spell out the name, and even if we're talking about Elder Scrolls I always spell them out. (Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, ect)

I don't think SK should be used, it is already associated with something else for me!

I say we call it ESSS...

Which can be ESSS as in S for Skyrim.
Or it could be ESSS as in Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim!

"I've made a new mod for ESSS."

"Let's play ESSS."

"Who wants to play ESSS?"

Sooner or later it will be abbreviated, when we discuss how dumbed down TES XIV: Masser is compared to OB or even Skyrim, you don't want to write Skyrim everytime your write how much Skyrim ruled, when TES-games still had swords and even shields, and not just werewolves throwing spears at each other in vast arenas.

Logic asside I guess Skyrim will be abbreviated to "Sky".

Going by that argument, we should all be writing in txt spk right now.

An abbreviation will emerge from those that don't like writing out full words. I don't think it is customary for professional writers to abbreviate until then.

People aren't going to want to spell out 'Skyrim Script Extender' or 'Skyrim Mod Manager' repeatedly, so at least for the utilities an abbreviation/acronym is useful. Ultimately, of course, it's up to the authors of the utilities.

I just hope there will be a script extender, mod manager, Wrye Smash and TES5Edit, whatever they end up being named...

SK. I mostly type out Skyrim, though, since the community hasn't settled on an abbreviation.

Agree. I'm the same, although I did use MW for Morrowind mods as that was the trend and I guess I fell into it, but whenever I am talking about the game - not naming a mod - I use Morrowind. I never used OB for Oblivion though.

No not another script extender!

I'm not really sure why it needs an abbreviation, Skyrim is pretty short as it is. TES: V or TES: S would likely be the least ambiguous otherwise. SR or SK would just be confusing just like OB is for oblivion.

SR makes more sense, but for some reason my brain connects SK more to Skyrim than SR, so there you go.

Ah that's cool. I don't do 3D modelling, but that looks like an excellent resource for it. Would be good for re-texturing too I guess, but you'd have to buy those and I'm not *THAT* into modding for TES. :P I'm also not that good at it. Usually I just modify preexisting textures to suit my needs, although I can do some so-so stuff in Photoshop - but it's still modifying existing elements, not coming up with anything from scratch.
