So what's the deal with Bryce Anders?

So I was in Vault 3 yesterday to clear out the fiends and rescue Anders - something I'd done without too much hassle in previous playthroughs. This time, I ran into a couple frustrating problems though. First off, I knew how pathetically weak he is, so I told him to go back to the camp like I always did. Everything seemed fine initially - he went into the sneaking stance and started heading off. But then suddenly, instead of leaving the vault, he attacked one of the entrance guards, and got instantly killed. I tried reloading and redoing it, but this kept happening to me so I figured I'd just leave him there, clear out the vault myself, and then get back to him later. So I went and killed Motor Runner, cleared out the maintenance wing and came back to the recreation area, only to find the idiot dead right outside his hiding place. I suppose I could have avoided this by trying to clear out the recreation area first and then going down to Motor Runner, but by that point I had already quick-saved myself into a corner and wasn't about to lose a bunch of progress just to fix it. I had half a mind to just leave it at that, too, because he kinda deserved it, but in the end I used the console to resurrect him and send him back to base.

The bugs I ran into were annoying, but my bigger question is this - why does Anders have so little health to begin with? I get that he's wounded and all, but you'd figure that if a guy's on the verge of death, either he or my character (with 70+ medicine skill) would have noticed it. So what's the deal with this? Is it intentional, or some kind of oversight?

Can't you just clear the Vault then rescue him?

If you do that before getting to him, you run into another bug (at least I always do) which causes him to go back to camp on his own, and then when you talk go him, he still thinks he's at Vault 3 (and so do your character for some reason), and for me that's pretty jarring and really breaks the immersion. Which is why I generally try to do it the "proper" way.

In any event, I'm not so much interested in how to rescue him, since I know of several workarounds - I just want to know why he's got so little health to begin with. It just makes no sense for him to be that weak and still be even remotely willing to fight Motor Runner himself (or any fiend, for that matter).

The way I did it in my First run with NCR was, killed everyone in the vault besides the fiends in the maintenance wing. go down and kill the fiends in the maintenance wing but leave Motor runner unaware. Tell him to come with us kill motor runner since he's by himself easily.

not sure why that is happening - i tried the motor runner thing the first time around and Anders made it thru every other time i had the same thing so i gave up. I wonder if Anders is related to Anders of the Great Khans?
