Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is more true to the manga, whereas Full Metal Alchemist is "inspired by" the manga (IE it reinterprets a variety of characters).

Brotherhood follows the manga from start to finish. The first anime doesn't. It starts off following the manga then branches out into an original story.

So I should watch the Brotherhood series and not the original animated series?

The first Full Metal Alchemist didn't follow manga storyline. The manga couldn't catch up on the TV series so they set up a different route of plots. Brotherhood follows manga closely to the end.

Okay, thanks for the advice guys. I've already watched the original series, I just wanted to know if there was a point to watching Brotherhood, becuase I've watched the first few episodes and it seems very similar. So I guess it branches off at some point.

I'd definitely watch Brotherhood...and read the manga too, if you can. I first watched FMA a few years ago, and loved every minute of it. Been rinsing through Brotherhood over the last couple of months, and I'm really enjoying it! It sounds kinda stupid, but I read a chapter of the manga, then watch the Brotherhood equivalent episode...a really fun way to bosh through it all :)

Do they have different endings? I didn't like FMA's ending...

Don't forget to watch FMA: Conqueror of Shambala if you watch the first series. It could actually qualify as a really long final episode.

I'm definitely going to pick up the manga the next time I go to my local library.

Ha, I stopped watching when the manga got so absurdly bored to me.

FMA Info (In spoiler read at your own discretion)

Spoiler
From what i've heard, read, and watched Full Metal Alchemist follows the Manga up to a certain point. After that point they deviate from the original material because the Manga wasn't finished yet. That's why we saw sloth as Ed's mother, and Fuhrer Bradly being defeated by mustang. It's also why most of the Homunculi were defeated using their remains of when they were human.

The FMA story was a good one imho even though it deviated from the manga originally.

Key Points:

1. There were two central figures instead of just one being Dante and Van Hohenheim being the other one. In FMA they are both people that exist long ago with extreme knowledge of the alchemical processes. They use this knowledge to jump from body to body prolonging their eternal lives with Hohenheim giving up.

2. Homonculi are created through human transmutation spells with Ed and Al's mother being sloth I believe.

3. The ending is different where Ed is left on the other side which resulted in the Conqueror of Shimbala movie being made to tie up loose ends.

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (Warning contains some spoiler information)

Spoiler
This is a more faithful adaptation of the Manga since it was close to being finished. Think the author of the Manga had 8 to 12 chapters left while work begun on the anime FMA: Brotherhood. Here things are much more darker than the first anime as it deals with philosophical elements, political Coups, genocide, and the lust/obsession for power. It's also here that the creation of the Homunculi are extremely different than the FMA one. (Won't spoil it)

I'll leave parts out of the FMA: Brotherhood thing so that it can remain a surprise. I will say that I liked Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood a bit more than the original due to its overall tone carrying a greater weight than the original anime.
