The Chimer were what the Dunmer or Dark Elves before Azura cursed them.

The Chimer were a group of rogue Aldmer (The original elves from which all of the modern mer descend) who followed Beothiah to Morrowind. When Almsivi used the Heart of Lorkhan to become gods Azura cursed the Chimer, turning their gold skin to ash and their eyes red. Ironicaly the only ones not affected by the punishment were the Almsivi.

Chimer are now know as Dunmer due to Azura's curse and the actions of the tribunal. Their skin was turn to an ash like colour and their eyes went red to show their own greed
