What the Hell are spiders doing in the Far Northern Hinterla

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2009 1:33 pm

Im pretty sure they are called frost spiders, so I think they can handle the cold.

Yeah, I think I read they're frost spiders. And they're most likely only in caves anyway.

And yeah, this is not real life, it's a fantasy game. However, spiders can survive in pretty cold weather, I would know, as I live in kinda similar environment as Skyrim (except for so high mountains).

so??/ it has a very large body mass which means it retains its temperature much easier than a small spider would. So its possible that it lives in skyrim but it probably just has to eat alot of food.

The Elder Scrolls may be a fantasy setting but it's not as if general logic and reason have been tossed into oblivion. The question posed by this thread is not unreasonable or out of place. Though it may not be be a factor in-game, it is stated in lore that Argonians have difficulties in the colder parts of Skyrim due to their reptilian nature. I'm sure there will be a good explanation concerning the spiders.

One of the few replies I actully considered reasonable. At this point I dont mind so much that many want the spiders in the game, but just to which lengh they go to make it easy for themself.

'It is fantasy, so logic don't have to apply' is really not a great reason, at that point. Most off all when at the same time there are many tiny things that people do ask about, and which they back up with tiny logical points. (Don't get me wrong, I don't mind a lot of tiny suggestions based on tiny logical points. (Bee's, and should they react or even be able to kill because some can, is the only one that comes to my mind atm, but there are and were far more)) But you can't just make some things super realistic, then ignore an explanation for others.)
(Again, not ever responds was devoid of trying to use reason, I agree with the cave answere for one, but this is mainly in respons to the ones who just said 'Its fantasy and I win')
Anyway, I admit, spiders are in and we have to live with it.. but we are still free to ask questions.

Fact: Spiders love to ski.

How would they coordinate all those skis?

Okay you can have your twelve-foot spider, but one that lives in the cold? That's just weird.

Well, apparently there will be snakes. Snakes don't like the cold.

All of Skyrim isn't frozen, plus this isn't Earth.

This is a good explanation IMO. Also, I think Todd said it was about 6 different region with major differenses.

Its almost as if they are creating a whole new world completely different from reality. Whats next talking lizards and cats?

:foodndrink:

Just cause you don't see them doesnt mean they are not there, probably hiding in caves underground in the game to keep warm and safe i would guess.
Or giant spiders taht attack dragonborns have enough fat on them to conserve heat and survive cold i guess and dont apply to our wimpy spiders standards?

And the fact that they are giant makes it kinda hard for them to hide the entire winter. Then again: who said thet aren't hiding in their caves, waiting for some unlucky adventurer to wander in? :)

As we know, Skyrim, a fictional land, has their climate based on Earth's four climates, and there are no other RPG's with spiders who are found in snow or ice.

Not exactly the brightest thread, OP.

... actually in world of warcraft there are spiders all over the frozen continent of northrend, but they all live underground waiting for unsuspecting adventurers or animals to wander in so they can ensnare them in there webs. kind of like shelob from lord of the rings...man that is a scary thought going into a dark cave passage only to end up stuck in a giant web while some fat ugly spider slowly descends from the ceiling.......i hope they hate fire..

They are called frost spiders for a reason. Spiders are the addition that I like most in Skyrim, except the dragons. I can't wait to fight them in their lairs and it doesn't bother me at all if their ecosystem doesn't copy exactly the spiders in our reality. I've never seen in reality spiders as big as tanks either.

I saw a giant spider here in Finland yesterday, must have been at least 1 inc wide! (if you count it's ego as part of it's length).

imo, giant spiders feel much more home in Skyrim than in cyrodiil or morrowind.. prolly because cyrodiil is far to civilized and morrowind has many things that eat them for lunch anyway, so if they had been there, they died out long ago.

There will be, you'll only find them underground.

It would be one thing to have giant Spiders in Black Marsh ( a place I never intend to visit anyway if I can avoid it. A festering, fetid, vermin infested swamp. . . keep it.)

See you in TES VI: Black Marsh :foodndrink:

The hero may have lured the beast out of the cave :D
I'd lure a bunch of them in the nearest city if I could but I heard the cities have walls again

Two thoughts come to mind about this...

!. Spiders are smart...no one would expect them to be where they are...until it is too late, smart spider.

2. Most people are freaked out by spiders, even tiny ones, and kill them on sight. I imagine that the sight of a 6' spider would elicit a similar response in people...therefore in a brilliant case of evolutionary adaption, spiders grew to be able to survive in places that only a damned fool would go...Win for the spider.

Neither should Argonians. But they love it, apparently.

Me thinks someone is just scared of spiders

got me thinking... argonians=reptiles and reptiles are cold blooded right? wouldn't the cold hinder the speed of Argonians? Argonians need a basking meter in hardcoe mode!!!

oh wait nevermind. These creatures are imaginary. The argonians could be warm blooded. I don't think it ever confirms or denies this.

What the spiders are doing is having your character wrapped up in their itchy, slimy, acidic web paralyzed by their venom as they slowly chomp away and svck your body void of fluid while you are still alive over the course of 5 agonizing days until you are an empty shell that it lays eggs in and 5000 baby but soon to be 8' spiders hatch and get into another characters home crawl into their nose and lay more eggs in their brain, then they hatch rise and repeat.

even fantasy worlds have internal logic - that is what allows for a suspension of disbelief. This is a valid thread, and would benefit by less people with token ' duhh itz a fantasy world, anything is possible!' comments - By that logic, you could encounter a humorous taking bunny rabbit with a tie-die t-shirt and a penchant for rude jokes, and it would be just fine, because, well, this is a fantasy world, yeah, and anything is possible! -_-

No it's a fantasy world, and it's TES. It needs to fit in the game (which most people agree spider's will, and tie-dye comedian rabbits do not).

I'm hardly an expert on spiders, but here's my take on it...

I expect spiders hibernate in the colder months because of their low surface area: volume ratio. Smaller things have a larger surface area when compared to their volume, meaning a greater loss of heat. Now, the spider we saw in Skyrim is huge. Massive. This would actually be a very sensible adaptation for it to survive in a colder climate. A larger creature will be far more suited to conserving heat, and it's not so unlikely that it would be able to survive in Skyrim. Especially if it also hid in burrows or caves, which seems likely to me.

Just stating the point that it is a crap argument to say 'it's a fantasy world', because fantasy worlds still have their own internal logic.

Actually. Cold doesn't have any effect on anyone in the TES. You or anyone else can and DO run around naked in the snow and suffer no ill effects.
