What the hell is up with this "Dunwich" building?

Post » Sun Sep 09, 2012 6:22 pm

I recently started playing F3 again and found something I have not seen before, the "dunwich" building, Im a massive fan of H.P lovecarft and thought it was a mere coincidence it had a similar name to the "Dunwich horror"....I was wrong...

Noises, doors moving on there own, hallucinations, and that black Shrine...that looks nothing like anything in the capital waste lands...Is the Dunwich building something explainable, or it it of the
supernatural

You've never gone to the dunwhich building before? Wow, I think most of the sounds you hear are made by the feral ghouls

Bethesda is big on the works of Howard Philips Lovecraft, but the building has more do with the Shadow over Innsmouth than the Dunwhich horror.

There was a quest in the Point Lookout DLC that involved the building.

That still doesn't explain the rest...or maybe it does? Does radiation in real life make you hallucinate?

There isn't an in-game explanation. Aside from the fact that its a "haunted" building.

Marcella has heard of it though, so its possible the building is a well-known cult location or something of religious significance. Point lookout also suggests that Dunwich and the Krivbekneh are related.

Which makes sense considering that the Krivbekneh is a reference to the Necronomicron.

So they basically left it up to the players imagination?

Aside from the connection to the Krivbekneh and Marcella, yeah, pretty much.

No more to due with the slow degeneration into something baser than a human. It is a common theme in his works like: The Rats in the Walls among others. This came from Howard's own fear of genetics as his father had a mental breakdown and so did his mother, Howard had phsycotic breaks as a child and this left him sccared. I think Besthda choose Dunwhich as it is later invovled in the Point Lookout quest which has its own Necronomicon in it. As the premise for the Dunwhich horror was for Wilber to retrive the book and call Yog-Sholoth over to this world.

It does, but the entire premise is simply "Creepy supernatural easter-egg reference to HP Lovecraft."

I honestly found the whole thing pointless; unless I missed something at the Shrine... If it was just an obelisk there ~and that's it... then yeah, I found the whole thing to be pointless.
(Aside from the reference I guess.)

It was sort of a let-down; after about 20 minutes I decided that there was nothing to find and then left.
