What the hell is wrong with my arms?!

Post » Thu Mar 24, 2011 5:12 am

The elbow is FAR too sharp in the second one. He looks like his elbow comes to a perfect point. Not how it works, folks.

I think it's the lighting/shadow.

yeh my hand doesn't have any viens so those arms look weird

My hand does :o

I think they look fine, and when you have a large muscle mass, that's what it'll look like from that perspective.

I don't care if it has a slightly lower poly count, I'm not going to study my character's arm for the split second it comes out.

Graphic threads tend to give me head aches... I really gotta stop looking at 'em :(

Did a search, couldn't find anything already on this, thought I'm sure it's been mentioned.

What's up with his arms?! In the first pic, he's got a weird fold where the elbow is, and in both of them it's disgustingly veiny. They just look...odd. And wrong. And WEIRD.

Has this been talked about before, and is there a reason for me actually getting upset about a video game character's ARMS?! Fhanks.

The first one is his bicep, not a weird fold. It's just bright white because of the light from the sun and spell. As for the veins on his arms, that's what happens when you get overly muscular. That's why I'm going to pick a body choice in Skyrim that is lean muscle and not Rambo or as skinny as a starving man.

Look at those arms, compare them to Oblivion and then tell they're ugly.
You can actually see the veins and muscles on that arm, as opposed to Oblivion's arms.

He reminds me a bit of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan, actually. :)
But as Bethesda (or is it just Todd?) are big Conan fans this doesn't surprise me!

I much, much prefer a slightly awkward and otherwise natural muscular arm to a stretchy tentacular limb from Oblivion.

Repost - because this thread is still alive. Look at the pics and then please stop talking about 2 old pics that look weird to some people.

This - I really do not understand what could be wrong with the fingers in any of the pics released so far. I can put my arm and hand in the exact same positions easily. As for how they look, well they look rugged and worn, as I would expect from a medieval melee fighter.

There are even more examples from the trailer, but not many good screens, so just check it out and freeze frame to see them. And be content.

I used to worry about these arms, but now I'm quite comfortable knowing Skyrim will support dx11 (so maybe tessellation?) and will have greater textures for PC.

Now for the veins: I remember Todd saying or I read somewhere that you can choose your body type, maybe this is the biggest and most vascular?
I think it's pretty hard to believe that any MER besides Orcs would be muscular like that, so even in low poly it may look fine with others less bulge arms.

No, Todd specifically said that none of the big features of DX11 will be used, to keep it "looking the same everywhere".

Graphically, the arms look A-OK.

The thing that makes them look weird is that the camera seems to be mounted into the neck. Stretch your arms out in front of you, and compare to the Skyrim shots. You'll see what I mean.

You do realise every single one ofthose is in 3rd person. I use first person a lot, soI'd rather not have bad looking arms there, and they DO look bad in 1st person. You can't say that they don't look low poly when youhave a bicep bluge with 3 edges. 3. It's like the top of a traqezium. \__/ There's your (upside down) bicep.

Yep. I know. And you don't know they look bad in first person. You just know what you don't like about those 2 screens. Higher poly count will be better, yes. Complaining about the anatomy of the hand and arm design in Skyrim = pointless.

The design is good, the viewpoint is not the best on 2 old screens, and now everyone is bothered. While I like that people are practicing good attention to detail, it is not productive to claim something is wrong when there is no evidence of it not being corrected already. I hope we see improvement on the arms as well. See, I agree. Hurray.

My point was to try and give everyone some practical comparisons of good design and graphics. That is all.

Well actually it's just lazy/stingy. Consoles are not to blame here, Beth just doesn't want to go the few extra steps even the community took, including new graphics tech in TES3 and 4.

C'mon. You're telling me that oddly hexagonal joints and a vein every 3 centimetres is 'normal'?

I'm really struggling...in fact it's taking all my strength to keep my comments clean with this one.

We're still over 6 months away from release... Plenty of time to adjuct angles and veins on arms.

It's 2005 hardware, get over it.

How the bulge are perfectly fine lines, really sharp and point is not because of 2005 hardware. It's because of really poorly done meshes, as in being hyper-extremely low-poly. It has nothing to do with it being on xbox 360. It's the how the models themselves have been poorly done.

Yeah, I see that but that's not much an issue for me personally. What is grinding my nerves more than anything is that it's all too obstructing my view. No friggin' way you're gonna held up your hand that high and that close to your effin' nose all the time!. The way the first person view was in Daggerfall was the best yet, in my opinion. Keep them in the periphery, plz.

Always been my biggest gripe with Elder scrolls First Person view.

Why, oh why the heck, does my character run around with both arms held up in front of his face??? WHY?

Tradition. Started with the very first first person shooter.

Too true! Especially since the 3rd person view is now kind of improved(their words, not mine,) and now that the items menu will have this 3D preview feature for any objects in our bags, there's just no point to flaunt it around anymore with the first person view.

@Luke Skyrimmer: Yes, but at least they could make it less obstructing this time around. Just the tip of the readied weapon at the periphery would be much nicer.

I think it's fascinating that people are only nit-picking. That means Bethesda is doing something right.

Since DirectX 11 is confirmed, you know a modder will add tessellation to the existing models to make them smoother. So if you have a PC and DX11, then this will soon not be a problem.

Come to think of it, you're quite right. All the nit-pickings we had on this forums now suddenly sounded perversely positive.

I have to agree. Get the weapon out of my vision. I would change away from larger weapons, just to get extra periphery or because they obscured too much of my screen. I'm definitely hoping that it's just the tip.
