What the hell is wrong with my arms?!

Post » Wed Mar 23, 2011 8:04 pm

Well, it's the ONE thing you will ALWAYS look at. Might as well make it, if not pleasant to look at, at least something of indifference.

If I were the only one annoyed by it, I would probably sit back, relax and enjoy it for it what it is, avoiding, therefore, being a complainy-pants. Since I see there are others that also found it distracting, I'll join in in hopes of it being improved a lot until launch.

It is low poly, which makes the supposedly natural veins and skin "paths" look messy and overall weird.

The veins aren't as long as in real life but it looks good anyway.

[Raises and looks at frontal tentacles]

I'm not sure how your human arms are supposed to look like at this perspective, but I deem them to be fine IMO.

The first looks fine aside from being a little blocky and low resolution imo, something I'm used to as a console player (don't know about you PC guys). The second looks oddly shaped where the index finger meets the thumb and where the wrist meets the forearm to me. That said it might just be strange perspective, may not be finished, and may or not be noticeable when being played in motion. I'm personally not worried about it. Debating it can't hurt, but I'm sure Bethesda are on it.

They don't look right to me, and I would like to see them improved.

That being said, It's not a major issue. I'm still pumped about Skyrim, and I will still have a blast playing it.

Yup, you may think that. I don't think so, and I have said why. Ask a good artist with lots of talent in anatomy and see what he/she thinks as well.

You keep saying that, but is there one in this thread?

I half-way agree about the arms; they aren't perfect, but the imperfection is only evident on relatively close examination (ie, paused first-person perspective), and I suspect not many people are familiar with what higher-than-average muscle mass actually looks like close up (and without Hollywood lighting). I fail to see where "extreme low poly" is coming from, as well. There's gotta be a lot of tris in that arm, and it does have to run on the consoles...

Anyway; room for improvement, but not what I consider a big deal.

I am one, but anatomy is hard for me for whatever that's worth. I use a book of poses when I want my anatomy to look right, which is always. I'm great at the shading and detail stuff though and I'm decent with perspective.

Here's the best thing I have on the internet, according to my own opinion on my work, to give you some perspective.

I tend to agree with you though, regardless of whether I'm a credible source of anatomical accuracy.

I have to agree that the arms look bad, very low poly in those two screen shots. The veins and muscle mass look perfectly normal though. My veins pop out more that that, my gf hates it.

I honestly would rather them work on something more important like mounts instead of arms and hands.

Why do you think it looks fine, despite it being really low-poly (having really point edges on places) and the arm in the 2nd screenshot is actually twisting around itself.
It's one thing to say it looks fine or bad, and it's another thing to say why and try to explain.

Because you won't be looking at your character's arm 90% of the time and when you do, it's in motion and your brain won't have enough time to anolyze the polycount. So, it's perfectly fine by me.

Graphical optimisation is the last thing they'll do before shipping the game. I wouldn't worry about it. NB: I think ut looks on par with todays graphics, so I don't mind.

To the people thinking it's not done: I doubt that. The game was in a very late stage of development when they started releasing information. They've stated that several times that they held off mentioning the game for far longer than normal. I wouldn't be surprised if the infamous water flow and those arms are as they appear in the final game. If they change, I'll be surprised. They might change that water scene considering the huge focus it's getting though.

trust me its still in pre alpha stage if its not then Beth must have lost their touch when it comes into video games.. most games do not enter beta until 3 months before release if that.

I think you have that backwards. They optimize the graphics first, then they crank the graphics settings up right before the framerate drops below 30fps.

I see what you mean. I actually didnt notice it before, but it must be a lower-poly model than I thought.

However, it seems to look fine in the gameplay so I dont think it would be too much of a problem

No, he's got it right.

Those are Todd's exact words IIRC. Don't feel like searching through everything to find it but I'm 99% sure that is what he said.

"Right now, we want to work on the main game and how it plays and getting the graphics fast everywhere(AKA optimization), and then as the project gets closer to release we start supporting all those other things(higher graphics settings)."

As the one person in this thread that responded to his question about there being any artists in this thread, I agreed with you (as did he for the most part if I recall) about at least one of the screenshots looking odd. I don't see what it matters whether it's an artist in this thread or one that YOU personally know (since you were asking in general after all), unless you're just trying to control who the artist is to give yourself more authority on the subject. The problem with that is that one's opinion is only valuable if their skills on the subject are demonstrated to those in the discussion, which I would say neither I nor the artist you chose has properly done.

In any case, here's my original post on the matter which you may have understandably missed as it was posted before he asked his question. As I said, I pretty much agreed with you regardless of my lack of authority on the subject..
