What the hell is wrong with my arms?!

Post » Thu Mar 24, 2011 9:23 am

lol, maybe he should check out MW. the least of my concerns are about how vascular the arms will be.

What's up with his arms?! In the first pic, he's got a weird fold where the elbow is, and in both of them it's disgustingly veiny. They just look...odd. And wrong. And WEIRD.

yeh my hand doesn't have any viens so those arms look weird

Tbh those arms both look very natural and realistic. Have you never seen a body builder..their veins are pumpin.
With the different body archetypes, veins will be less visible on weaker body types. That looks fine to me.

The fingers look weird, and the arm itself is too polygonal.

What you are seeing is the bulge of the bicep, not the crease in the arm.

Yeah, but I am talking about how they are completely perfect lines, which just looks bad. A bulge is not a straight line.

First picture, that fold is the lower half of his bicep. Second picture, the veins are normal as having large amounts of muscle mass increase your vascularity.

Edit: You seem to have changed the first photo. Nevermind.

Its not what is being portrayed, its how its being done. The arm looks like it has a lower poly count than an oblivion one, and the textures on it are awful!

It seems more of a lighting problem than a texture problem.

While we're at it, anatomically speaking, the fingers are wrong/weird as well.

This is what I thought when I first saw the screens too. The hands are just weird.

In all fairness Hands are some of the most difficult things to draw/portray. I don't know why, but that has always been the case for me and a lot of the more artistic people I know.

Indeed, it's nice to see Bethesda putting realistic details into character models, after the completely smooth skin Oblivion's character's had. I want characters that look like real people here, when I want to see anime characters, I'm perfectly content to watch anime.

The only problem I have with those arms is that they look a bit low on the polygon counts, but there's not much one can do about that, I suppose, Bethesda needs to make sure the game runs well on current generation consoles, after all.

The hands look fine to me, actually, I'd say they look better than the arms in the first person screenshots, perhaps because their low-polygon counts are less noticable.

They do look weird, but only if you focus on it too much. Seems like contrariato are just trying to anolyze every flaw possible just for the sake of earning their wool cap and scarf.

I hope low poly count means it's using the normal body mesh, therefore meaning we can see our whole body. That will be some retribution (right word?) for the poor looking arms.

the guy has magic pumping through his veins in both pics, if you believe the arms look weird go cast a spell and look at your arm while you do it. But you can't, so we don't know what your arm would look like if you did. The arms in the pics look fine.

Indeed they are. I used to draw quite a bit when I was younger and hands are what I always found a lot of trouble with. Thing is though, I think the hands in Oblivion look more realistic (in terms of anatomy, not hi-res textures) than Skyrims. I dunno, it might just be that one screenshot that makes them look weird, but I remember them looking almost exactly like that in FO3 as well.

Perspective
Try to hold your arm so that you see the same angle as what you can see in the picture.

We can build a back story for this guy: He was iodine deficient as an infant, it's a disorder we know as cretinism; the TES universe doesn't have the medical advancement to diagnose this, which could be why the OP wasn't informed.

The elbow is FAR too sharp in the second one. He looks like his elbow comes to a perfect point. Not how it works, folks.
